Life's Abundance Dog & Cat Food Improved!

Great news direct from Dr Jane Bicks, Life's Abundance product formulator! Life’s Abundance Premium Health Foods now have improved recipes, and have the same great flavor dogs and cats love! Of course, all of these wonderful ingredients are balanced so that our foods are 100% nutritional, according to AAFCO (Association of American Feed Officials). It’s the same superior quality food that your furry ones are accustomed to; I’ve just taken it to a whole new nutritional level!

I’ve just had some pet parents ask me, “Why would you change your recipe, especially when you know how beneficial it these products already are?” And I say to them, it is my duty as veterinarian, a pet lover and a product formulator to do my very best for cats and dogs. And that includes making improvements to an already excellent formula, if I find evidence that the changes can really “up” the nutritional value of a food, treat or supplement. I can assure you that all of these upgrades are backed by good solid scientific research that I have investigated myself.

Please remember, every single ingredient in Life’s Abundance is carefully selected. Everything that goes into our foods is included for a reason – to promote the health and well-being of companion animals. As a holistic veterinarian, I need to address all the needs of the body, judging the merits of ingredients by their impact on an animal’s physiology, anatomy and biochemistry. As a product formulator, I create recipes that maximize the benefits so that we get the results we want – which always amounts to improving health states. You never have to worry that your lovely pet’s food is being made by some anonymous formulator who only works with numbers, values and percentages.

With Life’s Abundance Premium Health Food for Puppies and Adult Dogs, I have made some subtle but substantial enhancements, including …

• An Antioxidant System including vitamins A, C and E, as well as blueberries and pomegranates: studied for years, antioxidants are recommended by prominent health and medical organizations.
• Oat Groats: this natural source of complex carbohydrates contains E and A oils, B vitamins, iron, zinc, copper and magnesium, while providing an excellent source of fiber.
• A Proprietary Blend of Vitamins and Minerals: sourced from a unique mixture of vitamins and minerals, as well as fruits and vegetables, for a wide array of the nutrients that puppies and dogs need to thrive.

With Life’s Abundance Premium Health Food for Kittens and Adult Cats, I have added …

• An Antioxidant System including vitamins A, C and E, as well as pomegranates: for the same reason listed above.
• Dog Grass: helps supports a healthy urinary tract, which is vital for cats.
• Alfalfa Sprouts: perhaps the richest in minerals of all grasses, this herb helps support healthy joints.
• More Protein: we’ve increased the amount of the same high-quality animal source proteins – chicken, catfish, eggs, turkey and liver – for an excellent array of amino acids.

And, with Life’s Abundance Weight-Loss Formula for Adult Dogs, I’ve added some of the great ingredients included in the above formula for dogs, including …

• An Antioxidant System including vitamins A, C and E, as well as blueberries and pomegranates.
• A Proprietary Blend of Vitamins and Minerals.

And, just like before, all of Life’s Abundance Premium Health Foods contain high-quality proteins, whole grains, Omega fatty acids, dietary fiber and direct-fed microbials (like those found in yogurt). The kibble size has not changed, and neither has the flavor. I am positive that you and your pet will continue to enjoy the same benefits as before.

A Life’s Abundance diet means that your companion has a tremendous nutritional advantage, and it will always mean that, as long as I am here working to serve you and your family.

Thank you for caring enough to provide the best possible foods for your pet kids. Together, we’re making the world a better place for our beloved dogs and cats.

Best wishes,
Dr. Jane Bicks

The Truth About Dogs and Cats

Today, many studies are being conducted  on the connection between our ancestral and contemporary diets. As it turns out, most of us have deviated far from what our ancestors ate. In this respect, the same goes for cats and dogs. Just like us, most of our pets are not eating the diets that are meant for them.

So, it is possible that we are unknowingly sabotaging our pets’ health?

If you want to know the truth about cats and dogs, read on.

Dogs . . .
This may not come as a surprise, but dogs are historically scavengers and are primarily meat eaters. In fact, a natural diet included bones, chunks of carcass, fish guts, animal guts and heads, rotten greens and fruits, and eventually discarded human food.

Sounds appetizing, doesn’t it? That explains why your dog will eat any and everything in your garbage can if given the chance. In fact, the major contributing factor in the domestication of dogs was their attraction—way back to the beginning of civilized mankind—to whatever food was available at human garbage dumps. Eventually, the tamer wolves that were the least threatened by human beings, over tens of thousands of years, became our companions and evolved into doghood.

Dogs truly function better as carnivores and should have plenty of meat protein, which provides the building blocks of good health. While a small to moderate amount of carbohydrates can play a secondary role in a dog’s diet, Dr. Jane suggests feeding only highly digestible carbohydrates such as brown rice. Excessive and/or poorly digestible carbohydrates as in cereal based dog foods with only hints of meat are not recommended.

Cats ...
If you have watched a National Geographic episode and witnessed how large cats eat in the wild, you know everything you need to know about a cat’s most basic needs. All cats chase and devour different kinds of prey, which supplies them with abundant protein, fat, some pre-digested flora or grasses and moisture contained in the meats.

Though cats became domestic much the same way dogs did and have also been subjected to omnivorous diets, they’ve managed to retain their original need for protein even more than dogs.

This explains their relatively short intestine, requirement for specific animal protein constituents such as taurine and their inexorable craving to jump on moving prey. The hunter is still in them. Cats unequivocally require meat in their diets and we as owners shouldn’t compromise this need.

Mars Candy Kills?

I was recently cruising the internet and came across the title Mars Candy Kills.  Well since 99% of American has a sweet tooth I thought I better check out this link.  It states that that candymaker Mars, Inc.—creator of M&M's, Snickers, Twix, Dove, Three Musketeers, Starburst, Skittles, and other candies—funds deadly animal tests, even though there are more reliable human studies and not one of the tests is required by law. Mars' top competitor, Hershey's, has pledged not to fund or conduct experiments on animals. Being an animal lover, I see no reason to still test on animals and wanted to share this with you.  If you would like to send a quick note to Mars urging the company to join its rival Hershey's in pledging not to test on animals please go directly to their website here

Help! My Cat Is Overweight? What Should I Feed Him?

Dear Dr. Jane: My cat is about 10 pounds too fat! What should I do?

Dr Jane's Answer: Unfortunately, most weight reduction foods focus on weight loss but not on sound health. These foods are formulated to deliver a diet of low protein, low fat, low calories and high fiber. While one would think that cat owners would be content with the weight loss, if there is any, they generally discard the diet food because of the consequences: itching and scratching, dandruff, excessive shedding, dull brittle coats, insatiable hunger, changes in personality and overall lack in vitality. Since older cats are generally the victims of this food, one must be concerned about their already-frail immune systems. Unless your cat is extremely obese and/or under veterinarian orders to lose weight, the alternatives are: 1. Increase Daily Exercise  2. Feed a High Quality Food like Life's Abundance Health Food For Cats

Most owners of obese cats seek out a diet, light or senior food hoping that this will be the key to weight loss. Unfortunately, in most cases, a cat becomes obese simply because he is over fed. Since every nugget contains calories, some more then others, the key to a slim waist line for a kitty is to measure the amount of food being fed. Since every food contains different amounts of calories and is metabolized differently, one must follow the feeding directions for the selected food and then lower the amount if necessary. If the food is decreased by 25% and the kitty is not loosing any weight, then changing to a weight loss food may be necessary. A cat doesn't have to stay on that weight loss food forever. Once a waistline returns, the cat can be changed back to regular food. Measure out the food and don't free feed. Spread its allotted amount of food into two to three meals per day.

Menu Foods delays settlement announcement

Menu Foods has reportedly agreed to settle on the lawsuits brought against them because of the pet food recall of last year. Although details were scheduled to be announced tomorrow, it has been postponed to later in the month.

Here’s the update from Menu Foods…

On April 1, 2008, the Hon. Noel Hillman, Judge of District Court, District of New Jersey, scheduled the filing of the anticipated settlement agreement and motion for preliminary approval for May 1, 2008, with a hearing for May 14, 2008.

After a telephone hearing today, the Court granted the parties a brief extension of time to complete the drafting of documents and pleadings related to the settlement and to permit time for review and signature by the parties. What is Whole Grain Brown Rice?

Milling is the process that turns brown rice into white rice by removing the outer layer known as the bran layer - this alters the nutritional value of the rice. The complete milling process that creates white rice from brown rice destroys 67% of the vitamin B3, 80% of the vitamin B1, 90% of the vitamin B6, half of the manganese, half of the phosphorus, 60% of the iron, and all of the dietary fiber and essential fatty acids.  In short, brown rice is a fiber-rich whole grain whereas white rice is simply a refined and nutritionally depleted processed food.

In March of 2006, research reported in the journal Agricultural Research, Nancy Keim and a team at the USDA ARS Western Human Nutrition Center studied 10 women age 20-45 who ate a whole grain diet for three days, then ate the same foods but with refined grains in place of whole grains. Blood samples at the end of each 3-day period showed that the refined grains diet caused a significant increase in triglycerides and a worrisome protein called "apolipoprotein CIII" (apoCIII), both of which have been associated with increased risk of heart disease.

At the University of Utah, in a study of over 2000 people, a team led by Dr. Martha Slattery found that high intakes of whole grains, such as brown rice, reduced the risk of rectal cancer 31%.  They also found that a high-fiber diet, 34 grams or more of fiber per day, reduced rectal cancer by an impressive 66%. The findings were published in the February 2004 issue of the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition.

In a Study presented at American Heart Association Conference, March 2006, overweight children, age 9-15, spent two weeks on an all-you-can-eat diet of whole grains, fruits, vegetables and lean protein, while exercising 2.5 hours each day. University of California researchers led by Dr. James Barnard reported that in just two weeks the children's cholesterol levels dropped an average of 21%, while insulin levels fell 30%.

In May, 2008, the FDA approved the following health claim for Brown Rice:  "Diets rich in whole grain foods and other plant foods and low in total fat, saturated fat and cholesterol may reduce the risk of heart disease and some cancers."

Using Brown Rice in place of white rice is one small change that can make a BIG difference in the lives of you, your family and your children.

Are Fleas and Ticks an issue this Spring? Help eliminate them the Natural Way with Botanical Dog's Products!  Free Shipping on orders over $39
Dog Fleas - The helpful hints that can help treat your pet
  • You can stop flea problems without using pesticides.
  • Fleas have been called "the bane of every dog and cat owner." If you feel that way, here are some common sense ways of getting flea problems under control:
  • Wash your pet's bedding regularly. It's a common place for flea eggs to develop and hatch.
  • Flea comb your pet as often as necessary.
  • Try a flea trap. Studies have found they catch between 10 and 95 percent of the fleas in a room.
  • Vacuum often. Vacuuming can remove over 95 percent of the fleas in an area.
  • If your pet brings fleas in from outdoors, consider using flea-eating nematodes (tiny worms) in areas where your pet spends lots of time.

Here are some of the problems caused by insecticides commonly used on pets:

  • Imidacloprid (often sold as Advantage) is toxic to animal nervous systems, causes damage to DNA (the genetic material in living cells), and increased pregnancy loss (miscarriage) in laboratory tests.
  • Fipronil (often sold as Frontline) disrupts hormone function, is classified fipronil as a carcinogen (a chemical that can cause cancer), and lingers on pets for about two months.

New Tri-Factor Formula in 4Life Transfer Factor, Transfer Factor Plus and RioVida

SALT LAKE CITY, UT - 4Life Research(TM), the world leader in Transfer Factor science and immune system support development, announced today the discovery of immune activity in a weight range of molecules significantly smaller than transfer factors.

Transfer factors are molecules in a weight class between 3,500 - 12,000 daltons that help the immune system recognize, respond to, and remember outside threats. Although scientists have known that smaller molecules than transfer factors existed within cow colostrum, their significance in terms of immune activity has been unknown until now.

In 2005, 4Life Chief Executive Officer David Lisonbee and the Research and Development department began studying these low weight molecules. After two years of research, 4Life clinical findings now indicate that molecules in a weight range between 250 - 3,000 daltons play important regulatory roles in the immune system.

4Life extracted and concentrated these nanofraction molecules from cow colostrum for their proprietary NanoFactor(TM) extract, combining NanoFactor with their exclusive Transfer Factor E-XF(TM) extract of transfer factors from cow colostrum and chicken egg yolks to produce 4Life Transfer Factor® Tri-Factor(TM) Formula, the most comprehensive approach to immune system support available today.

“I don’t know of another company in our category,” said 4Life Chief Scientific Officer Calvin McCausland,

Ph.D. “In 2004, we were the first company to combine transfer factors from cow colostrum and chicken egg yolks. In 2005, we introduced RioVida®, the world’s only transfer factor beverage. Now, the discovery of new immune activity in nanofractions. When it comes to scientific innovation, there’s simply no comparison to 4Life.”

4Life Transfer Factor, Transfer Factor Plus®, and RioVida are now fortified with the
new Tri-Factor Formula.

“We’re taking Tri-Factor Formula to the world because no other product represents such a unique and indispensable opportunity for a quality life,” remarked 4Life President Steve Tew.

David Lisonbee: “At the end of the day, our distributors can rest assured that 4Life will stay a good pace ahead of the curve in the areas of science, service, and success.”

4Life, global leader in the development, production, and distribution of Transfer Factor immune support products, continues to post growth in more than 40 countries around the world.

CAUTION! Flea Product! Pro Meris Alert

SO FAR 7 DOGS ENDED UP IN NEED OF VETERINARY CARE AFTER USE OF THIS DRUG.

ERR ON THE SIDE OF CAUTION. (see email below!)
PLEASE CONSIDER NATURAL ALTERNATIVES THAT YOU CAN USE, INSTEAD OF THIS DRUG. WE ARE NOT SURE IF IT WAS A BAD BATCH OR IF THIS IS A SERIOUS REACTION TO THE MEDICINE ITSELF!

The following message is extremely worrisome.  If you don’t have a pet, please pass this on to anyone you know you may have a cat or dog….it’s very important.

“This is Jo and this is a very important message to my family & friends who have dogs or cats and to alert you to the hazard of using a new Flea & Tick Preventative called ProMeris.

This is a new product designed to be a more effective product than other flea/tick treatments that was just released this year. It is available thru a vet and not currently online. I got ProMeris this week for my 7 dogs (6 Huskies & 1 Golden-Airedale), and the results were debilitating for nearly all of them - including me. Since my incident this week, my vet has pulled it from distribution and alerted the manufacturer, Fort Dodge.

Here are my results: Within less than 2 hours after applying, 4 of my dogs had vomited from 2-4 times, 3 were disoriented and stumbling, 1 was dragging his back leg, 1 was salivating. I had very similar symptoms like an allergic reaction - my lips were swollen, eyes very red, mucous membranes such as eyes, nose, and mouth were stinging. I was very disoriented - dizzy equilibrium and not able to drive. To make this a short story, all 7 of my dogs were admitted to the hospital for veterinarian care and 3 of them remained for care, IV fluids and observation for 24 hours. I was in the emergency room.

I’m home now and so are the dogs. We’re all feeling much better. Vet bills were over $2,500 and Fort Dodge is paying for these. Not only can the product cause this reaction, it has a highly noxious odor that permeated the house and is just starting to dissipate after 3 days.

Your dogs/cats might not have the same reaction, but given my experience, I wanted to help you all become well educated about the product.”

We recommend using natural flea and tick treatments from Botanical Dog , the chemical free alternative to Frontine, Advantage, Revolution, Hartz and other flea and tick medications.  If your pet is already suffering from flea and tick bites, try FleaDerm

Grapefruit Juice Speeds Drug Uptake

Most people take medicines with liquid to make them easier to swallow. Grapefruit juice is a mainstay of many breakfast tables and is a natural beverage for helping the medicine go down. That could be a mistake. Grapefruit juice interferes with gut enzymes that influence the transport of drugs into the body, which makes the drugs more concentrated and potentially dangerous. It can increase blood concentrations of some drugs by 1.5 to 15 times above normal for a particular dose. For example, drinking grapefruit juice with Lipitor can raise blood levels of the drug to unpredictably high levels and cause a dangerous muscle disorder called rhabdomyolysis. Grapefruit juice can increase blood levels of calcium channel blockers, statins, sedatives, antihistamines and Viagra. If you drink grapefruit juice and take medications, check with your pharmacist to make sure they are compatible.

Smelly Dog With Dirty Ears and Runny Eyes - Life's Abundance Testimonial

A couple of years ago, my husband and I changed our diet to organic and stopped buying foods that contained additives like partially hydrogenated oils and high fructose corn syrup. After a while, we felt better. Then we thought, wouldn't it be nice to do the same for our dogs (not that we weren't giving them premium food). We just wanted to remove the additives from their diets too. I did some research on-line and found Life's Abundance. How wonderful to find a dog food that was only meat, rice, veggies, fruit and probiotics. Our older Samoyed started on the food when she was 10 years old and lived to be 13 years old. When she passed away, our younger Samoyed had never been without a companion. After a few months, she seemed very lonely. We decided to get her a companion and adopted a male Samoyed from a Samoyed rescue organization. I was told by the foster "mom" that her husband had done extensive research on dog food and they were giving their dogs the most nutritional food. When we got the boy, he had just had a bath, but had a bad smell (which is unusual for Samoyeds). His ears were very greasy and dirty and his eye's very goopy and runny. We started feeding the boy Life's Abundance.

Within a couple of weeks, without a bath, the boy's odor was gone and his ears and eyes cleared up. This is when I realized how good the food was. Thanks for making the great dog food!

Third Party Comparison of Exotic Superfruits Ranks Açaí as "Exceptional" Nutrient Source and "Highest Known" Antioxidant Strength

In a November publication of the “INSIDER”, Paul M. Gross, Ph.D., authors an article titled, Tracking Market Meteors: Exotic Superfruits. The article explores marketplace trends among six superfruits: açaí, goji, mangosteen, noni, pomegranate and seaberry. In his quantitative and qualitative assessment of nutrients and antioxidant strength, Gross recognizes the açaí berry as an "exceptional source of polyunsaturated fats (particularly oleic fatty acid) and dietary fiber. In addition the content of vitamin E, calcium, copper, potassium, magnesium and niacin in açaí are among the highest reported for plant foods."Gross ends his evaluation of açaí by noting that, "As measured by ORAC and phenolic concentration, antioxidant strength for the açaí is the highest known, exceeding the next closest food by three-fold."

On Gross's scale of 1-10 (10 = highest score), the açaí ranked 8 in nutrient density and diversity and is the only superfruit to receive a 10 in the category of antioxidant strength. On the same scale, mangosteen (Garcinia mangostana L.) received a "1", the lowest rank, for nutrients and antioxidant strength. Similarly, the noni fruit (Morinda citrifolia L.) ranked a "2" in nutrients and "1" in antioxidant strength. In 2005, 4Life Research™ became the first company in history to successfully stabilize transfer factors in an acai rich beverage, RioVida, the antioxidant powerhouse.

4Life Chief Scientific Officer Dr. Calvin McCausland: "Currently, our R&D Team is studying the role that transfer factors may play in antioxidant absorption to support overall good health. As evidenced by Gross's study, we know that açaí is a marvelous superfruit. But it's our transfer factor that distinguishes RioVida in a superfruit beverage category all its own. 4Life Founder and Chief Executive Officer David Lisonbee, concludes: "In terms of antioxidants and immune system support, 4Life Transfer Factor RioVida is unparalleled.
