Life's Abundance Helps Dog Shelter Where Scores Of Dogs Are Dropped Off

Shelter02 Palm City, Florida – When the Humane Society of Vero Beach and Indian River County issued a public plea for assistance, after their dog population doubled in a single day, a company headquarted in Palm City stepped up to the plate … literally.

Seventy-five Chihuahuas and one Pug were dropped off at the shelter on October 19th, when a local breeder hit hard by the economy determined she could no longer operate her business.

Life's Abundance heeded the Society’s call for donations, providing more than 300 pounds of Life’s Abundance Premium Health Food for Puppies & Adult Dogs and Life’s Abundance Weight-Loss Formula for Adult Dogs and 46 pounds of Gourmet Dental Treats – Honey Peanut Butter Recipe.   The charitable giving helped to offset the shelter’s projected $30,000 shortfall in providing much-needed care to all of the animals.

“We’re all pet people here at Life's Abundance,” said Lester Thornhill, CEO of Life's Abundance. “When we learned about the shelter’s need, we felt we had to act immediately. We’d do it again in a heartbeat.”

All of the dogs, ranging in age from several years to just a few days old, received immediate veterinary attention. South Floridians interested in taking home these purebreds will have to wait another week to do so, but the shelter is encouraging any interested parties to visit soon before all the purebred dogs are adopted.

Life's Abundance is no stranger to giving back to the community. In 2007, Life's Abundance established a non-profit agency, The Dr. Jane HealthyPetNet Foundation, which awards financial grants on a quarterly basis to small- to medium-sized adoption agencies. While the foundation did not directly donate the foods and treats, they have donated tens of thousands of dollars to similarly worthwhile agencies located in South Florida and all over America.

Life’s Abundance and other premium pet products are available for purchase by clicking here. Life's Abundance is shipped direct to customers generally within 6 weeks of being made. If you’re interested in becoming an independent Field Representative for Life's Abundance, we encourage you to visit our “Opportunity” link today. This is an excellent opportunity for pet lovers and pet professionals.

Natural Eczema Remedies For Dry, Itchy, Inflamed Skin With Crusty Lesions/Bumps On Cats And Dogs

What is Eczema?

Eczema is a skin condition that refers to inflammation of the skin. It is also known as dermatitis and is characterized by itching and dry, scaly red patches. Not only does eczema cause tremendous discomfort for an animal and it can also often result in unexpected flare-ups triggered by allergic reactions, fleas or environmental factors. This condition affects both cats and dogs of all breeds and is most common in animals with sensitive skin.

With most types of eczema the following symptoms may be noted with regards to your pet:

  • Itching that may range from moderate to severe in certain areas
  • Lesions on areas of skin that become sparsely haired (back of the paws, abdomen, muzzle, and lips).
  • Inflamed areas that may bleed when scratched or ooze watery fluids
  • Blistering
  • Cracked, painful skin
  • Persistent scratching of a particular area
  • Persistent licking of a particular area
  • The appearance of a red, painful-looking sores, often overnight.
  • Scaly, rough or oozing areas on the skin, usually accompanied by hair loss.

Related conditions include:

  • Flea-bite Dermatitis (Caused by flea saliva residue on your pet’s skin)
  • Allergic contact dermatitis (your pet’s delayed hypersensitivity to allergens such as bleach, fertilizers, carpet cleaners and flea collars)
  • Atopic dermatitis (an allergic-type reaction that is accompanied by wheezing, asthma, and very dry skin).
  • Seborrheic dermatitis (yellow, greasy scales like dandruff on the skin of certain breeds – especially those with wrinkles or folds).
  • Autosensitization dermatitis (itchy rash that occurs in response to an intense inflammatory process somewhere else on the body, especially fungal infections).
  • Lichen simplex chronicus (rash caused by long-term scratching of an area producing thickened skin).
  • Pyotraumatic dermatitis (Often referred to as a “hot spot” - red, moist, hairless, painful-looking sore that appears suddenly. Often, this licking and scratching goes on at night, so the sudden appearance of the sore can be an unpleasant surprise)
  • Canine acral lick dermatitis (a fairly common skin condition in dogs. Affected dogs usually spend a considerable part of their day licking at one particular spot on one leg. An infected, wound eventually arises at the site).
  • Canine sarcoptic mange (an extremely irritating condition caused by the Sarcoptes mite most often affecting a dog's abdomen, chest, legs, and ears)
  • Feline notoedric mange (similar to canine sarcoptic mange, Notoedres cati is a microscopic mite that infests the skin of cats typically affecting the ears, face, and neck).

What causes Eczema?

The exact cause of eczema is not known. Researchers believe that hereditary factors as well as a malfunction within the immune system may contribute to the cause of eczema. Certain factors or triggers may also be responsible for the outbreaks of eczema and these include:

  • Irritants or substances such as household cleaners or detergents and chemicals
  • Allergens such as plant pollens and any number of pollutants
  • Sensitivity to certain foods (particularly dairy) as well as chemical food additives, preservatives and colorings
  • Changes in temperature or humidity
  • Stress
  • Hot weather and an animal’s perspiration (especially if they have folds in the skin that trap fungus or bacteria)
  • Flea Saliva
  • Fungal Infections

Diagnosing Eczema

Generally, eczema is diagnosed based on the history and appearance of the rash. Your vet will inspect the affected area and if possible, the exact type of eczema or skin condition is identified, although this can be difficult. Some skin tests can be performed to help identify the problem. If allergic eczema is suspected a 'patch' test can also be performed where a small amount of the allergen is rubbed onto your pet’s skin and the skin is monitored for 2-5 days for a reaction.

Help for Eczema

Although, there is no cure for eczema a combination of conventional medications, natural therapies and modifying your lifestyle can help.

If your pet’s eczema results from flea bites, action should be taken to rid the home of fleas. Corticosteroids such as injectable dexamethasone and oral antibiotics may be given to calm the itching and inflammation – however these medications may have side effects. ‘Hot spots’ need prompt attention to prevent bacterial infection.

Be aware that topical steroids can have significant side effects and most topical steroid creams need to be prescribed by a health care provider.

Natural remedies

Many herbal and homeopathic remedies have been formulated with specific ingredients to help lessen inflammation and soothe itchy, ‘angry and agitated’ skin. Herbs such as Matricaria recutita (German Chamomile) is widely used as a gentle cleansing, anti-inflammatory and soothing herb.

Galium aperine (Cleavers) is a cleansing tonic helping to expel toxins from the body and therefore assist in the treatment of chronic skin conditions such as eczema and allergic dermatitis. Calendula officinalis (Marigold), Hamamelis virginianum (Witchhazel) and Graphites can reduce swelling and are well-regarded as effective natural remedies to soothe itchiness while promoting skin health and skin support.

Tips For Eczema Prone Skin

  • Control your pet’s fleas regularly! This is key in the battle against dermatitis.
  • If you bath your pets – do not bath them too often. Make sure you use a natural, gentle shampoo – and always dry them off properly.
  • Never use human perfumes, moisturizers or talc on your pet’s skin. Treat other rashes, especially fungal infections, even though they may not seem related and watch out for infection.
  • Avoid dressing your pet in clothing: the skin needs to ‘breathe’ and in the case of dermatitis related to allergies or triggers, some detergents may be at fault for your pet’s irritated skin.
  • Keep your pet’s nails short to avoid scratching or rubbing the itchy area

How To Deal With A Dog Or Cat That Has Diarrhea

Dog-sitting Just like any member of our family, pets get sick.  In fact, one of the most common reasons for seeking the assistance of a veterinarian is diarrhea and as such this article will discuss a few tips for dealing with a pet that suffers from this problem.  Some pets will regularly have issues with diarrhea while others may develop the condition as an acute symptom to some other kind of gastrointestinal problem.  Even if diarrhea is a one time problem, it is still likely associated with other stomach issues so understanding the causes and some treatments for diarrhea should help you and your pet cope.

    Causes of Pet Diarrhea

In the most scientific sense, the main cause of diarrhea is the accumulation of dissolved substances in the intestine that causes excess water to be drawn into the intestine.  This may occur because food isn't absorbed properly or because electrolytes are increasingly secreted into the intestine or some combination of the two factors.  Unfortunately, understanding these underlying causes gives you little information about how to prevent or deal with pet diarrhea when it occurs.  Moreover, diarrhea may be a sign of a much more serious condition in the intestines or gastrointestinal tract.

Here are a few common causes of pet diarrhea that may help you understand what your pet is going through:

    Changes in diet
    Reactions to medical treatments
    Viruses, bacteria, or parasites
    Food-borne toxins

Should your pet have suffered from sudden onset diarrhea, consider the above causes and try to determine if these may be the reason for the condition.  However, if your pet is suffering from diarrhea and you cannot determine a reasonable cause, don't hesitate to visit your veterinarian.  Some infections or parasites may pose a serious risk to your pet's overall health and should be treated immediately.

    Treatments for Diarrhea

You've visited your veterinarian or determined that your pet's diarrhea doesn't pose a significant risk and you're looking for some natural remedies.  The following list gives a few ideas to help you treat your pet's diarrhea.

Available for cats and dogs, plantaeris is an effective treatment for diarrhea that is natural and works quickly by helping to regulate your pet's intestinal functions.  As a side benefit, plantaeris boosts immune system functioning.

    Calcium Montmorillonite

Also known as edible detox clay, this pure form of calcium can be given to your pet in food or water.  Using between a ½ and 1 teaspoon of calcium montmorillonite can help stop diarrhea by absorbing excess liquids in the intestines.  Be sure to give your pet plenty of water in order to prevent dehydration.

    Yuuca Root

Yucca root is a natural supplement that has been shown to be safe for reducing inflammation in the intestines and can help to reduce pain associated with diarrhea.

Remember, while these natural remedies can help you and your pet cope with diarrhea, it is important not to overlook the main causes for the condition.  If your pet is suffering from ongoing diarrhea or appears to have other symptoms, visit your vet immediately.

Wysong Not Happy Over Recent Criticism About Dog Food Recall

A few days ago I posted the recall from Wysong on their Senior and Maintenance Dog Food. Many blogs, forums, websites, etc criticized Wysong for waiting a week before they went "public" with this recall. Wysong has issued an additional statement on their blog on their reasons for doing this and even posted some comments they found on the web.

In reading their information, I did have an issue with this statement - "What is missed here is that we keep thorough records pertaining to who receives what products. Accordingly, when we determined a recall was necessary we put our focus into alerting those that actually received the products, and not those that had no reasonable chance of acquiring the affected products. " I understand this statement however, the people that were alerted were companies that sell it a pet store, a vet, a feed store, etc. This is where I become defensive - yes, you let your distributing outlets know about the recall and they can pull the bags from the shelves, however what happens to Sue Jones who comes in once every 2 months to purchase dog food and just bought a bag and won't be back to that store for another 2 months? Most likely, the pet store doesn't have Sue Jone's information and may not even know her name - how was she supposed to be alerted to this? This is why I feel, no matter what the reason, alerts of recalls or possible recalls need to be posted to the general public asap. If I read about a recall, even though I might not feed that dog food, I will be telling others about it and somewhere through the grapevine Sue Jones might hear about it and say "Oh My Gosh that's my food - I better check this out!"

I don't feel any of the criticism throughout the web was done maliciously. I feel it was concerned pet parents expressing concerns because none of us ever want to go through what happened to so many dogs and cats during the 2007 recalls. Word of mouth, blogs, forums, etc are available to help people find out about potential problems. Once they have the information it is up to them to decide how to proceed.

Wysong Dog Food Recall Due To Mold! Announced A Week Later!

I heard about this a week ago on another forum that Wysong was contacting it's distributors about pulling their Senior formula due to possible mold. I searched the web and couldn't find anything. NOW, a week later they have officially announced it is their Senior and Maintenance Formulas. Why did it take a week to announce it to everyone as an official recall? If you know anyone feeding this formula please let them know, it's already been a week of wasted time - thanks for caring about our pets Wysong!

Wysong has recalled some of their dry dog food due to mold.

The following batches of Wysong Canine Diets Maintenance™ and Senior™ have shown above acceptable moisture levels and may contain mold.

    Wysong Maintenance™: lot #: 090617
    Wysong Maintenance™: lot #: 090624
    Wysong Maintenance™: lot #: 090706
    Wysong Maintenance™: lot #: 090720
    Wysong Senior™: lot #: 090623

We ask that if you have received any of these Wysong products to please not feed them, and contact Wysong for product replacement.

    Subject: Product Replacement

Alternatively, please return or exchange at the store from which you purchased the product. Credit will be issued via our Distributors to the Retailer.

    We apologize for the inconvenience.

Ok....they want you to contact them for a REPLACEMENT or EXCHANGE! Come on - how about a REFUND! This really makes me sick - what are their precautionary measures so this doesn't happen again?

Clean Your Pet's Teeth Without Going To The Vet - The Natural Way

Petzlife Research has indicated that the number one health problem diagnosed by veterinarians in dogs and cats is oral disease.

Bacteria accumulation can lead to oral disease and increase the risk for disease in other organs, such as the heart, liver and kidneys, according to research.

100% All Natural and safe for all breeds of dogs and cats!!!

"Mouth infections can lead to serious problems in the gums and other parts of the body, including the heart, so it's important to give your dog's teeth and mouth special attention." -- American Kennel Club

Simply use our Spray or Gell on pet's teeth and the active natural ingredients will remove plaque and tarter, kill bacteria, heal gums, and eliminate bad breath!

To start your pet on the road to better health order your bottle of spray or gel today!

1.Are Petzlife oral care products safe for my pet? Yes! All the ingredients in both products are 100% natural with the main ingredient being grapefruit seed extract making them safe for all breeds of cats and dogs.

    2. What is the difference between the two products? The difference between the two products is in the application, the ingredients are the same in both products and the gel has a gelling agent to help coat the teeth. Note: please go to our directions page for additional information and see why you would want to use both products.

    3. How do these two great new products work? The ingredients mix with your pet's saliva when applied on your pet's teeth and completely coats your pet’s teeth and mouth. This process kills harmful bacteria and loosens plaque and tarter.

    4. How long will it take for my pet's teeth to be white? The results with your pet will depend on how closely you follow the directions, the age of your pet, and the current condition of your pet's teeth. You should notice a disappearance of tarter and plaque between the tooth and the gum line and a reduction in redness within the first few weeks of application. If there is a large build-up of plaque the last area that will disappear is toward the center of the tooth.

    5. My pet has bad breath will these products help? Yes! In most cases bad breath (halitosis) is caused by bacteria living in your pet's mouth.  PetzLife Oral spray and gel are specially formulated to kill bacteria on contact, so as your pet's mouth becomes healthier breath becomes fresher.

    6. Are there any side effects? None! The only thing you will notice is that your pet will lick their lips repeatedly after you spray and after application. This natural reaction helps coat your pet’s teeth and gums.

    7. I just had my pet’s teeth cleaned why should I use anything else? Now is an especially important time to use our uniquely formulated products. Your Veterinarian scales under the pet’s gum-line and in most cases this area does not immediately seal back to your pet's teeth. By using PetzLife Oral care products you kill the bacteria that could enter directly into your pet's bloodstream. You will also notice that redness will disappear sooner and with normal maintenance, either spraying or brushing, you most likely will not need to return for another cleaning!

    9. Will I save money by using them? Yes! The costs of taking you’re pet to the Vet. are increasing at an alarming rate. One of our satisfied customers said he couldn't get by with under $200 every time he went to the vet. Another cat owner paid $500 for a root canal! In some states scaling your dogs teeth could cost over $400! If they save you only one trip to the Vet. you are $$$'s ahead!

    10. What should I do if I really like them? First of all, congratulate yourself for giving your pet one of the most important health aids in the world, then tell everyone you know that has a pet about these amazing products, and make sure you get a bottle as a gift for all those cat and dog lovers on your gift list!

Do you really know what’s in your pet’s food?
       HealthyPetNet Truth About Pet Food
Although you may think all pet food manufacturers have your pet’s best interests in mind, this is not always the case. Current pet food regulations allow manufacturers to use ingredients that you would never knowingly give to your pet. In fact, you may be shocked to learn what some brands of pet food really contain. For example: the use of by-products (feet, bones and intestines, etc.), chemical preservatives (BHA and BHT) and grains that are often difficult to digest (corn, wheat, gluten and soy), which are often used as a protein source instead of meat.

42-inch Dog in Arizona Puts 'Great' in Great Dane

WOW! I read this story and am very happy for George and his owner Dave Nasser and at that size they should get the record. However, when I read 4 lbs of poo I wondered what George was eating. I'm sure after these articles the sponsorships will start rolling in and hopefully they will choose wisely and choose a natural dog food that is nutrient dense and those 4 lb poos will be no more!! Compare your current dog food to Life's Abundance Natural Dog Food.

TUCSON, Ariz. —  When you're the biggest dog in the world, you make your own rules.

You cruise by countertops of an outdoor kitchen and adjacent barbecue and lower your calf-sized head a notch to sniff out any crumbs from a recent party.

You nuzzle up to a bystander, easing your floppy, foot-long ears into the middle of his chest to request some lovin'.

You saunter up to a couch, twist your 42-inch-tall, 245-pound body into a puppy pirouette and land your rump on your owner's lap to take a load off.

Such is life for 4-year-old George, the Greatest of Danes.

Realtor Dave Nasser, his owner — well, maybe "sidekick" is a better description — runs his fingers through George's turflike fur and talks not about the duo's big plans to etch their names into the Guinness Book of World Records, but of George's docile nature.

"Great Danes are inherently lapdogs. He really thinks he's a tiny dog and wants to sit on your lap all the time. He wants to be right with you," Nasser said.

Prevention is Better than Cure - Progress in the Fight Against Breast Cancer

Breastcancer New reports show that maintaining a healthy weight, breast feeding, exercising regularly, and limiting consumption of alcoholic beverages can reduce the risk of breast cancer, according to an updated version of the American Institute for Cancer Research/World Cancer Research Fund's (AICR/WCRF) report.

Based on these conclusions, the AICR recommends the following for reducing the risk for breast cancer:
Reduce body fat. Because there is a proven link between excess body fat and cancer; the goal is to be as lean as possible within the normal range of body weight (BMI).
For a homeopathic product that improves sluggish digestion, boosts metabolism & increases weight loss, visit Triple Complex Slimmer's Assist

Be physically active. Exercise should be part of everyday life. Aiming for 30 minutes a day is ideal. This can include walking, jogging, swimming, or a combination of exercises. The important thing is to get moving enough to break a sweat.
For an herbal remedy that promotes healthy energy levels, stamina and vitality, visit Fatigue Fighter

Limit alcohol consumption. Alcohol should be limited to 1 drink per day for women, 2 drinks for men.
For an herbal remedy that promotes natural cleansing, detoxification and toxin elimination, visit Detox Drops

Breastfeed. New mothers should breastfeed exclusively for up to 6 months and then add other liquids and foods. Evidence is convincing that mothers who breastfeed reduce their risk for breast cancer, and there is also probable evidence that children who are breastfed have a lower risk of gaining excess weight as they grow.
For an herbal tonic that supports health, vitality and hormone balance after childbirth, visit NewMama Drops

Adopting these lifestyle changes and reducing exposure to substances that have been shown to promote the disease, such as hormones and chemicals, will go along way in helping you steer clear of breast cancer.
In addition, by embracing a holistic lifestyle that combines diet, exercise and natural remedy support, you are bound to promote a more balanced state of overall wellness for maintaining health and preventing disease.
“I take Triple Complex Slimmer's Assist and the weight continues to go! Also I have more energy and feel better about myself… I know I will succeed now.”
“The cleansing I experienced while using the Detox Drops was extremely beneficial. I had [good] digestive functioning and had an overall feeling of inner cleanliness.”

Ugh ANOTHER Nutro Recall - This Time It's Puppy Food!

I just heard that Nutro issued a voluntary recall of some of their puppy foods. It makes me shake my head ..... again .... that this company still hasn't taken extreme quality control measures to prevent recalls. This time the recall is due to plastic pieces in the food.  Here's the even funnier part - Nutro is calling it a voluntary retrieval instead of recall. Call it what it is - just another cover up from a brand who thinks they are a premium pet food. Here is the info from their site........(personally why would you want an exchange - get a refund!)

Q:  I heard that there may be plastic in some NUTRO® products.  Is this true?
A:  Small pieces of melted plastic were recently found in the production line of select varieties of NUTRO®  dry dog and cat food products.  We immediately retrieved the affected pet food from our distributors, and only three sku’s reached retail stores.  These were delivered to a small number of PetSmart and Petco stores.  The specific products are listed below.

Upon discovery of the melted plastic, we immediately halted manufacturing and performed a thorough search of all equipment.  We identified the source as a worker’s “bump cap,” similar to a hard hat, which inadvertently made its way into our manufacturing process.

Based on our extensive review, it is highly unlikely that any pieces of plastic made it into finished product.   However, upon learning of the incident, we voluntarily retrieved all potentially affected products.

We strive to produce pet food of the highest quality and safety standards. Consumers who believe they have purchased potentially affected product should return it to their retailer for a full refund or exchange for another NUTRO®  product, or contact the Nutro Products Consumer Care team at 1-800-833-5330.

Thank you for your continued loyalty and support for Nutro Products.
