Are White Dogs and Tear Stains Inseparable?

Maltese, Bichon Frises, Shih Tzus… all adorable and all prone to brown tear stains around their eyes. The staining is by no means limited to these breeds of dogs; it can occur in many light colored dogs, but particularly the smaller breeds. The good news is that there are things you can do to leave your pampered pet stain-free As is often the case, the best way to treat the problem is to first determine the cause. The five most common causes of tear staining are:

1. Ear infections. If you notice a lot of tear stains that coincide with ear infections, the two are probably linked.

2. Red yeast. Excess tearing turns the wet fur around the eyes into a breeding ground for bacteria, of which the most common is red yeast, hence the brownish tinge to the stains.

3. Blocked tear ducts. Some breeds of small dog are prone to blocked tear ducts which can cause excessive tearing.

4. Allergies. Cigarette smoke, certain shampoos, and chemicals are just some the irritants that can make the eyes water. Alternatively, an allergy to something internal, ie. food, can also cause tearing.

5. Water. It sounds so simple but drinking water is also the easiest cause of tear staining to overlook. Depending upon the mineral content in your local water supply, staining around the face may occur.

Although there are various antibiotics, steroids, and other medications that can be prescribed to treat tear staining, since it can be on ongoing problem, it is better to treat the source of the problem with natural products . A natural remedy may take a little longer to show results but it will be better for your dog in the long run.

First, if you think your pet’s drinking water may be the source of the problem, switch to using distilled water. Also be sure to avoid allergens where possible.

Some pet owners have found that using supplements to change the pH value of the actual tears can help by creating a hostile environment for yeast. Antacids or any other calcium carbonate tablets may help, as may a teaspoon of white cider vinegar in your pet’s drinking water. Be warned that vinegared drinking water will definitely take some time to get used to, so if you choose to try this method, introduce the vinegar slowly, gradually increasing the amount.

Be sure to keep your dog’s ears clean to prevent infections which can lead to staining. One of the most effective treatment methods is to take a two-pronged approach – using wipes to clean the face and a nutritional supplement to build up the body’s defenses from within. The Eyepack from Happytails Canine Spa Line includes a pack of Eyepads , containing colloidal silver, golden seal and eyebright, to wipe away tear stains without harsh chemicals. Also included is the Eyemunity nutritional supplement, a blend of enzymes, herbs and epicor to add to your dog’s food to strengthen their immune system. Using both together has been shown to have great results and returns your pet’s face to its natural gleaming white condition.

Cesar® Softies Dog Treats Have Won “Pet Food of the Year for 2010 - What? Are You Serious?

Contaminatedfood I was amazed when I saw this. If you have looked at the Cesars Dog Treats label you would also be amazed at how this product could win the Pet Food of the Year category and on top of everything - it's a dog treat not even dog food. What on earth were the voters thinking? Apparently the voters were not thinking and do not know how to read a pet food label or determine what a good food or treat is. This is just sad that consumers base their purchases on awards like this but yet never really look at the product.

Ed Uebele, marketing director, CESAR® Treats, said this - "We are honored that CESAR® Treats has been selected as the Pet Food category winner by Product Of The Year for 2010," "Being recognized as the top pet food product after having been on the market for a few of months is truly a tribute to our commitment to providing small dogs with the very best in quality dog treats."

Here are the ingredients for the Cesar® Softies Dog Treats, Filet Mignon Flavor -
Rice Flour, Wheat Flour, Sugar, Glycerin, Propylene Glycol, Animal Fat (preserved with BHA/BHT), Caramel Color, Natural Poultry Flavor, Potassium Chloride, Salt, Natural Filet Mignon Flavor, Calcium Propionate (a preservative), Potassium Sorbate (a preservative), Hickory Flavor, Artificial Color, Sodium Tripolyphosphate, Titanium Dioxide.

Where is the protein source? Where are the health promoting ingredients? This product is also preserved with BHA/BHT. BHA/BHT is a chemical preservative that has been linked to cancer. Tthese treats contain the ingredient ‘animal fat’ which is one of the ingredients determined by the FDA to be probable to contain pentobarbital and thus probable to contain a euthanized animal.

So, would you choose this as your pet food of the year?

Improve Your Night Vision in No Time!

Of all the changes that happen as we age, one of the most frustrating concerns is difficulty with night vision. I know I don’t have to tell you how distressing it can be to wonder how long you’ll be able to continue driving or going out at night.

After years of wear and tear, your pupils don’t dilate or expand as well as they used to. This reduces the amount of light that enters your retinas, your eyes’ main “image receptors.” With less light, your eyes don’t adapt as well…plain and simple. It can be so bad that many of my patients tell me it feels like they’re wearing sunglasses, even when they’re not.

Up until now, the best support we had was bilberry. It definitely works and has been a mainstay of my Vision Essentials formula. But the heavy-duty research today is showing the benefits of black currant. It’s truly the “next generation” of nutrients for night vision support.

Studies show black currant can help your eyes adjust to the dark—in just 30 minutes! Plus, it reduces eye fatigue when you’re performing visually tiring tasks. In today’s world, with television and computer monitors, that’s extremely important.

This is such a huge breakthrough that I’ve just updated my Vision Essentials formula to give you 200 mg of black currant extract—which is the highest research dose—in the best, most bioavailable form—so you’re getting maximum vision support.

Plus, I also updated Vision Essentials to give you pure beta-carotene based on the newest eye health research studies at the National Institutes of Health…

All in all, you’re getting 19 powerful nutrients for the health of your eyes and your vision

Each nutrient I included in Vision Essentials is crucial to healthy eyes, especially as you age. This unique formula supports every single aspect of your vision health, and helps to shield you from damaging UV rays. But most importantly, it gives you real results—such as being able to see more clearly at night.
If you’ve been taking Vision Essentials, I guarantee you’ll love the results you get with this new and improved formula. And if you’ve been waiting to give it a try, there’s no better time to start so you can continue to enjoy a lifetime of healthy vision.

To your health,
Julian Whitaker, MD

Fish Oil Supplements Beat Psychotic Mental Illness

Article From The BBC News Feb 2, 2010 -

Taking a daily fish oil capsule can stave off mental illness in those at highest risk, trial findings suggest.

A three-month course of the supplement appeared to be as effective as drugs, cutting the rate of psychotic illness like schizophrenia by a quarter.

The researchers believe it is the omega-3 in fish oil - already hailed for promoting healthy hearts - that has beneficial effects in the brain.

A "natural" remedy would be welcomed, Archives of General Psychiatry says.

"The finding that treatment with a natural substance may prevent, or at least delay, the onset of psychotic disorder gives hope that there may be alternatives to antipsychotic drugs," the study authors said.

Antipsychotic drugs are potent and can have serious side effects, which puts some people off taking them.

Fish oil supplements, on the other hand, are generally well tolerated and easy to take, say the scientists.

The international team from Austria, Australia and Switzerland tested the treatment in 81 people deemed to be at particularly high risk of developing psychosis.

Natural choice

Their high risk was down to a strong family history of schizophrenia, or similar disorders, or them already showing mild symptoms of these conditions themselves.

For the test, half of the individuals took fish oil supplements (1.2 grams of omega-3 fatty acids) for 12 weeks, while the other half took only a dummy pill. Neither group knew which treatment they were receiving.

Dr Paul Amminger and his team followed the groups for a year to see how many, if any, went on to develop illness.

Two in the fish oil group developed a psychotic disorder compared to 11 in the placebo group.

Based on the results, the investigators estimate that one high-risk adult could be protected from developing psychosis for every four treated over a year.

They believe the omega-3 fatty acids found in the supplements may alter brain signalling in the brain with beneficial effects.

Alison Cobb, of the mental health charity Mind, said: "If young people can be treated successfully with fish oils, this is hugely preferable to treating them with antipsychotics, which come with a range of problems from weight gain to sexual dysfunction, whereas omega-3s are actually beneficial to their general state of health.

"These are promising results and more research is needed to show if omega-3s could be an alternative to antipsychotics in the long term."
