P&G Recalls Small Number of Bags of Iams Cat Food From Stores in Loveland, Colorado

From: http://www.fda.gov/Safety/Recalls/ucm224352.htm

August 29, 2010 – CINCINNATI  -- Procter & Gamble (P&G) is voluntarily recalling a small number of bags of its Iams Proactive Health Indoor Weight & Hairball Care dry cat food which may have been sold recently in one or two stores in Loveland, Colorado.

These bags have the potential to contain salmonella, although no illnesses have been reported.  No other Iams pet food products are affected.

The Iams Proactive Health Indoor Weight & Hairball Care cat food in question is sold in blue 6.8-pound bags.  These bags feature a code date of 02304173 (B1-B6) and the UPC number 1901403921.

If you have this product, please discard it and call P&G toll-free for a product replacement at 800-862-3332 Monday-Friday, 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. EST.

P&G has worked with its retailers to remove the affected product from stores in the area.  P&G believes that only three bags may have been purchased recently by consumers in the area.  Yet, as a precautionary measure, the company is initiating this retrieval.

People handling dry pet food can become infected with salmonella, especially if they have not thoroughly washed their hands after having contact with surfaces exposed to this product.  Healthy people infected with salmonella should monitor themselves for some or all of the following symptoms: nausea, vomiting, diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, abdominal cramping and fever.  Rarely, salmonella can result in more serious ailments including arterial infections, endocarditis, arthritis, muscle pain, eye irritation and urinary tract symptoms. Consumers exhibiting these signs after having contact with this product should contact their healthcare providers.

Pets with salmonella infections may have decreased appetite, fever and abdominal pain.  If left untreated, pets may be lethargic and have diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, fever and vomiting.  Infected but otherwise healthy pets can be carriers and infect other animals or humans. If your pet has consumed the recalled product and has these symptoms, please contact your veterinarian.

How Pet Food May Be Making Your Child Sick

From: http://abcnews.go.com/Health/Wellness/dry-pet-food-linked-salmonella-children/story?id=11344300

By LARA SALAHI, ABC News Medical Unit

Many of us consider our pet cats and dogs so much a part of the family that we share everything from couch space to kitchen space. It seems the spaces we share may harbor bacteria hazardous to our health.

A new study published Monday in Pediatrics suggests that some young children of pet owners may get salmonella poisoning just by touching surfaces that come into contact with dry cat and dog food.

Researchers analyzed a national database of foodborne illness cases from 2006 to 2008 and found that some salmonella outbreaks in some children originated from pets fed dry foods in the kitchen.

"It looks as though the children were around the food bowl, handled it, played with it, maybe played with the water in the water bowl and it was that kind of association that led to the transmission of salmonella," said Dr. William Schaffner, chairman of preventive medicine at Vanderbilt University. "It would appear that the little children didn't eat the pet food, but I would question what parent would admit to that in a questionnaire."

Quick Tips to Stay Safe From Salmonella

On "Good Morning America," ABC News Senior Health and Medical Editor Dr. Richard Besser also shared the following tips for keeping yourself and your family safe from salmonella:

Wash your hands after any contact with dry pet food.

Instead of reaching into the pet food bag with your hand or the food bowl, use a scoop that you use only for this purpose.

Keep pet food in a secure container -- not just in the bag, where it can spill out on the floor -- and away from human food.

While most pet owners feed their pets in the kitchen, consider doing it somewhere else, away from where you eat.

If you have a cat, be sure to wash your hands thoroughly after cleaning the litter box, because salmonella will live even after it passes through your pet.

P&G Investigating Whether Its Pet Food Made Dog Sick

From: http://www.daytondailynews.com/news/dayton-news/p-g-investigating-whether-its-pet-food-made-dog-sick-871821.html

By John Nolan, Staff Writer

MIAMI TWP., Montgomery County — A Miami Twp. man says his mixed-breed golden retriever became ill while eating a Eukanuba pet food that Procter & Gamble Co. recalled over concerns that it might have been contaminated with salmonella bacteria.

P&G said it is investigating Steve Brandell’s complaint that his dog suffered several weeks of vomiting and diarrhea while eating the Eukanuba Naturally Wild dry food he bought on July 11.

A P&G team of veterinarians and veterinary technicians will contact Brandell and his veterinarian, company spokesman Jason Taylor said Friday, Aug. 20.

Brandell said that after he learned P&G had recalled that pet food from the market , he switched to another brand of pet food with a veterinarian’s concurrence. The dog has recovered, Brandell said Thursday.

P&G on July 30 announced the voluntary recall of the dry pet foods produced in Lewisburg “as a precautionary measure because it has the potential to be contaminated with salmonella.” There has been no confirmation that any pets have been sickened, Taylor said.

The company has stopped making pet food at the Lewisburg plant since July 30 to search for sources of contamination. It may have come from chicken used to make the food, Taylor said.

The recall involves Iams veterinary dry formulas, sold through veterinarians’ offices, and Eukanuba Naturally Wild, Pure and Custom Care Sensitive Skin dry foods, sold mostly at specialty stores, P&G said.

P&G has received about 20,000 inquiries about the recall, but only a small percentage of those queries have been referred to the company’s team for investigation, Taylor said.

Brandell said he incurred $167 in bills from the veterinarian for the dog’s treatment.

P&G will consider, on a case by case basis, whether to reimburse pet owners for costs of medical treatment if the company confirms that the pet was sickened by contaminated P&G pet food, Taylor said.

Doggie Dunce Caps: Bad Behavior or Serious Medical Issue?

by Dr Sarah Wooten

Have you ever found freshly dug holes in your backyard? Or bits of your favorite chair strewn across your den? Are you the proud parent of a canine that greets your guests by repeatedly jumping on them? Does your furry friend beg at the table, bark incessantly or strategically deposit her poo next to the dining room table? Simply put, if your dog could star in a film entitled “Dogs Gone Wild”, then you share a common complaint among dog lovers worldwide: frustrating behavioral problems.

There is one thing that unites all behavioral problems - they are undesirable to the pet parent. Behavioral problems are the most common complaint received by veterinarians at annual exam time. Whatever the complaint - whether it’s barking, chewing, digging, chasing, biting or aggression - many dogs exhibit problem behaviors. If you’re wondering what could cause these ongoing stresses in your relationship with your canine, you’re not alone.

There are many possible reasons why a dog exhibits bad manners. The easiest and most common explanation is a lack of proper training. Much to the chagrin of some new pet parents, dogs are not born fully trained – it’s up to us to teach them the difference between acceptable and unacceptable behavior. Other contributing factors of bad behavior are loneliness and boredom, which is especially common in young dogs of active breeds. Destructive behaviors like hole digging and fence chewing are often physical expressions of cries for attention.

You might be surprised to learn that medical conditions can be at the root of bad behavior. For example, aggressive outbursts might be the result of a serious and painful hip, a broken toe nail or even an infected ear. If your dog has ever snapped at you while you were petting her back or neck, a bulging disc or a pinched nerve might be the culprit. These conditions are extremely painful, and dogs are predisposed to bite when experiencing this level of pain. In fact, aggression and biting are common indicators that your dog is in pain.

In this episode of Pet Talk, Dr. Sarah discusses common medical causes of unacceptable behaviors, what you can do about it, and the kind of training veterinarians recommend.

So You Found a Pregnant Cat…

by Dr Jane Bicks:

Did you know that cats can become mothers in their first year of life? While more and more pet parents spay their cats early in life, many good Samaritans have gotten more than they bargained for, after finding that the stray they adopted is pregnant. As a matter of fact, we here at the Life’s Abundance office found ourselves in a similar situation when a sweet little stray showed up at our door a while back. Of course, food and water were the first order of business. After a few days, she began to trust us enough to pet her. That’s when we discovered that she was pregnant. To make a long story short, we took good care of her and her kittens, and now the whole feline family lives with their new adoptive parents. If you have a pregnant cat, you may be wondering what to expect and how best to care for the expectant mother.

First, take her to your veterinarian for a full checkup. Your veterinarian will be able to determine how far along she is and if there are any health concerns. Second, provide complete and balanced nutrition. More than any other factor, nutrition will influence the health of mother and kittens. Cats are pregnant for approximately 8-9 weeks. Like humans, cats gain weight gradually throughout their pregnancy. By the end of her pregnancy, your cat should be eating 25-50% more than her normal amount. CatKittens

To ensure that she is getting enough food, the free-feed method is advisable, but be sure to measure the amount you feed daily and provide fresh food each day. Feed a diet that is nutrient-dense like Life’s Abundance. Consider also feeding a high-quality canned food, to provide extra protein and water. Additionally, providing fresh, clean water is a must. You should not need to increase the amount you are feeding until the fifth or sixth week of pregnancy, and mother cats should not gain more than 15-25% of their body weight by the end of pregnancy. Remember, overweight cats can have a higher risk of difficulties during labor and delivery.

Pregnant cats lose 40% of their pregnancy weight after giving birth; however, they still require two-to-three times their normal amount of food after giving birth in order to produce enough milk to feed their kittens. The protein and fat concentration of their milk is very high, so good nutrition is critical not only during pregnancy but also until the kittens are weaned. As we mentioned, continual access to fresh, clean water is also very important, as dehydration can affect the milk supply. Change the water out daily or provide a water fountain.

Mother cats should deliver in a quiet, familiar area where they will not be disturbed. Usually, a mother cat will choose her space - all you need to do is provide blankets or towels for her comfort, she will take care of the rest. Unfamiliar surroundings, noise or strangers may cause problems by impeding delivery or milk letdown, or even negatively affect the mother’s instinct to care for her kittens.

A day or two before birth, your cat may stop eating – this is a good sign that delivery is near and she has started stage one of labor. Stage one usually lasts 12-24 hours, and during this time she may become reclusive or restless and nest. If she doesn’t eat for more than a day and shows no signs of delivery, contact your veterinarian, as cats should not go more than a day without a meal. Normal stage two labor is when the kittens are delivered! The entire delivery can take up to a full day, depending on the litter size. There should not be more than one-to-two hours between kittens. If it seems like delivery is taking longer, or if you have any concerns, call your veterinarian immediately for advice.

A single unspayed female cat and her offspring can account for the birth of 420,000 kittens in a seven-year period. There is an estimated 70 million homeless cats in the United States, and four million cats and dogs—about one every eight seconds—are put down in U.S. shelters each year. Spaying and neutering your pet is a proven way to reduce the number of homeless pets and ensure every pet has a family to love them.

Thank you for all you do to make the world a better place for your dear companions.

Dr. Jane Bicks, DVM

Alpo Releases "Real Dogs Eat Meat" Campaign & Book

I was reading a pet magazine and saw the ad from Alpo promoting their new book and campaign "Real Dogs Eat Meat." When you call up Alpo's Website it has Dog Food: Premium Purina Alpo Brand Dog Food and you can click around on the products but the funny thing is they have removed the ingredients! I don't know of any reputable dog or cat food company that has removed the ingredient list of their food from their websites. Is this because they are promoting Real Dogs Eat Meat but their food is corn based? Is it because they believe consumers only look at pictures and say well that looks like a great food so why know what's in it?

20135902_lg Here is one of their foods - Alpo Prime Cuts Savory Beef Flavor Dry Dog Food

Ingredients - Ground Yellow Corn, Beef And Bone Meal, Soybean Meal, Beef Tallow Preserved With Bha, Animal Digest, Salt, Choline Chloride, Zinc Sulfate, Vitamin E Supplement, Ferrous Sulfate, Added Color (Red 40, Yellow 5, Blue 2), Manganese Sulfate, Niacin, Vitamin A Supplement, Calcium Carbonate, Brewers Dried Yeast, Copper Sulfate, Calcium Pantothenate, Natural Flavor, Pyridoxine Hydrochloride, Vitamin B12 Supplement, Thiamine Mononitrate, Vitamin D3 Supplement, Riboflavin Supplement, Calcium Iodate, Menadione Sodium Bisulfite Complex (Source Of Vitamin K Activity), Folic Acid, Biotin, Sodium Selenite.

The name sounds good doesn't it? As you can see this follows the "Real Dogs Eat Meat Campaign." Yep, first ingredient is corn which is a known allergen. Then we have Beef and Bone Meal which is hard to digest and a dry rendered product from (beef) tissues, including bone, exclusive of blood, hair, hoof, horn, hide trimmings, manure, stomach and rumen contents.  This is an inexpensive, low quality ingredient used to boost the protein percentage. Soybeal meal is another allergen and another low quality protein filler used to boost the protein content and then we have some beef tallow preserved with BHA which is also a carcinogen, a cancer causing agent. Beef tallow is also used to make low quality dog and cat food more palatable. Beef tallow is very low in linoleic acid and much cheaper for the pet food industry to use than a good quality vegetable oil or nutritionally rich chicken fat.  Then we have Animal Digest. The FDA has tested Animal digest and has said it is likely to contain the lethal drug pentobarbital and thus likely to contain a euthanized animal. It also contains menadione sodium bisulfite complex - this is another ingredient on the questionable list. Menadione Sodium Bisulfate is a synthetic version of Vitamin K. This ingredient is added to pet foods and treats as an inexpensive source of Vitamin K. This ingredient can be highly toxic in high doses. Hazard information regarding menadione lists "carcinogenic effects" and states "the substance is toxic to kidneys, lungs, liver, mucous membranes. Repeated or prolonged exposure to the substance can produce target organs damage." Oh and added colors are always a bonus! So, your dog won't eat the food if it's in it's natural colored state so you add dyes to make it more pleasing to them and the consumer. Who doesn't like a rainbow of colors in their pet food bowl?

This ad campaign is so sad and once again - Buyer Beware - pretty pictures and great wording don't make a food good. Turn your cans and bags over and look at the ingredients and in this case question - Where's the meat Alpo?

Purina's Project Pet Slim Down - A Closer Look At The Weight Loss Dog Food & Treats

So you have an overweight dog or cat, what are you going to do? When you go the vet, they tell you about Project Pet Slim Down - A Purina Veterinary Diet for dogs and cats. Sounds good, right?

When you take a closer look at the ingredients you will be asking yourself - where's the good stuff?

Here is the dog food ingredient list:

Whole grain corn, corn gluten meal, soybean hulls*, soybean germ meal, soybean meal, pea fiber, wheat gluten, poultry by-product meal, animal digest, powdered cellulose, tricalcium phosphate, animal fat preserved with mixed-tocopherols (form of Vitamin E), salt, choline chloride, zinc sulfate, ferrous sulfate, Vitamin E supplement, manganese sulfate, niacin, Vitamin A supplement, calcium carbonate, copper sulfate, brewers dried yeast, calcium pantothenate, garlic oil, pyridoxine hydrochloride, Vitamin B-12 supplement, thiamine mononitrate, Vitamin D-3 supplement, riboflavin supplement, calcium iodate, menadione sodium bisulfite complex (source of Vitamin K activity), folic acid, biotin, sodium selenite. Q-4560

Talk about a list of poor quality ingredients and let's not forget that corn, wheat and soy are also known allergens. According to the AAFCO (American Association of Feed Control Officials) by definition (of ingredient) there is no meat in this dog food - Poultry by-product meal is not a meat. When you go all the way down to the 8th and 9th listed ingredients you will see what this food is consdering their only animal protein sources - the Poultry by-product meal and Animal Digest. Repeated or prolonged exposure to the substance can produce target organs damage."

This weight loss dog food, soon to be food recommended by veterinarians does not contain chelated minerals for better absorption or probiotics for a healthier immune system. It doesn't contain Omega 3's for a healthy skin and coat, it doesn't contain a high quality protein for muscle maintenance during weight loss, nutritious fruits or vegetables or antioxidants.

Oh and when you look at Meaty d'lites - the weight loss dog treat you will also scratch your head and say - Where's the Meat? Ingredients - Ground wheat, water, corn gluten meal, glycerin, ground yellow corn, wheat flour, sugar, powdered cellulose, hydrogenated starch hydrolysate, chicken by-product meal, salt, soybean meal, malted barley flour, animal digest, beef, corn starch-modified, phosphoric acid, dried whey, sorbic acid (a preservative), natural flavors, gelatin, bacon fat preserved with BHA and citric acid, added color, calcium propionate (a preservative), BHA (a preservative), citric acid (a preservative).

Yep, they've one upped themselves with that treat and even used BHA. BHA was found to: cause squamous-cell carcinomas in stomachs of rates and hamsters. (Cancers of this type are among the most lethal and fastest acting, the swiftest effects being seen among animals with light colored fur. (Many white cats die within months after getting squamous cell black tumor on their skin.); and enhance stomach and urinary bladder carcinogenesis.

When your vet recommends this food please be a wary consumer and ask what he feels IS GOOD about this food.

If you are looking for a high quality weight loss food for dogs, try Life's Abundance. They also have Wholesome Hearts Low Fat dog treats to compliment the food because when your dog is on a weight loss program high fat treats can sabotage the affect of feeding a quality food.

Compare Life's Abundance SeaLogix Fish Oil To Your Current Fish Oil Brand - Does It Stack Up?

Thanks in large part to the superior quality, purity and concentration of nutrients, Sealogix represents an exceptional value compared to other market brands. To demonstrate the overall value of our formula, we have provided the following comparison chart, which matches Sealogix against competing brands. To create a meaningful, apples-to-apples comparison, we calculated our chart based upon the two most prevalent nutrients in omega-3’s – the long-chain fatty acids EPA and DHA. The prices listed in the chart below demonstrate the costs associated with 1,000 mg of omega-3's (DHA/EPA).* You will note that the Sealogix Pharmaceutical Grade Fish Oil supplements beat the competition by a wide margin: the Sealogix 8-ounce liquid costs $0.45 per 1,000 mg, the Sealogix with Sesamin 120 capsules cost $0.51 per 1,000 and the Sealogix with Sesamin 240 capsules cost $0.54 per 1,000.

While price may be your primary source for comparison, it shouldn’t be the only measure. When it comes to providing the very best for you and your family, it is vital to take into account the purity and safety of a given fish oil supplement. That’s why Sealogix is subjected to stringent scientific testing, the results of which are posted online for your review. All of our Sealogix formulas are tested by IFOS, the International Fish Oil Standards organization, widely recognized as the world’s premier fish oil testing agency. As noted in the comparison chart, all Sealogix supplements have achieved IFOS’s highest possible rating – 5 Stars.

* Although there is no established RDA for Omega-3 Fatty Acids (EPA and DHA), much of the medical research on the health benefits of these nutrients is conducted using amounts of 1,000 mg and up.

The information for this comparison was acquired from reputable Internet web sites during March and April of 2009. This comparison chart focuses on the cost of 1,000 mg of Omega-3's (EPA and DHA) only. Although some of the products used in this comparison contain additional ingredients that may be beneficial to your health, only the cost of the long-chain Omega-3's (EPA and DHA) were calculated. The Sealogix brands used in the above comparison are Sealogix Omega-3 Pharmaceutical Grade Fish Oil Supplement (8-ounce Liquid) and Sealogix Omega-3 Pharmaceutical Grade Fish Oil Supplement with Sesamin (120 and 240 capsules) and the costs per bottle are Autoship prices.

Silver: Comprehensive Immunity Protection For The Entire Family

Banner_prosilver
The benefits of silver have been recorded historically for many years. From the late 1800's to the late 1930's, Colloidal Silver was used commonly in America and other cultures. The Chinese understood its cleansing properties. In the Ayurvedic tradition of India, it had been used medically. The benefits of silver have been researched and reported in such prestigious medical journals as The New England Journal of Medicine and the Lancet.

Seventy years ago, silver was widely used. Silver retailed at about $100.00 per ounce in the 1930's. Recent technology has brought the price down so that silver can now compete in the medical marketplace. Numerous articles in medical journals of silver can be found dating before 1940.

Widely used historically in cultures around the world, silver has previously been very expensive to administer. Owing to recent improvements on the original methods of production, silver is now available in a more concentrated form at a fraction of its previous cost.

What Is Ionic Silver?

Ionic Silver is a germicide and is tasteless, non-toxic and can be taken orally or applied externally. The EPA's Poison Control Center reports no toxicity listing for colloidal silver and considers it harmless in any concentration. Ionic silver is the safest and best all-around natural antibiotic germ fighter.

Pro Silver is tasteless, odorless, non-stinging and non-burning to sensitive tissues - even a baby's eyes. It may be taken orally, applied directly to cuts, scrapes, open sores, warts or used as a rinse for acne, eczema and other skin irritations. It may be gargled, dropped into eyes or ears, or inhaled into the nose.

We get silver and all minerals into the body through the food we eat. It gets into our food through living, healthy soil. Plants convert raw minerals to colloidal form. When we eat the plants, our bodies utilize the colloidal minerals gathered by the plants. These minerals enter the blood stream and are taken to the various organs of our body. Hence, we get silver from plants.

If digestion and assimilation are weak, or as the tissues age, we may develop a silver deficiency, and thus an impaired immune system. Also, many of our soils have been stripped of trace minerals through poor agricultural practices which also cause deficiencies and subsequent health problems.

The body has an innate ability to rejuvenate and restore itself to optimum health. When taken daily, Pro Silver acts an optimal immune system supporter by helping the body fight invaders.

Safe and Effective

Bacteria are becoming more and more resistant to antibiotics. The Los Angeles Times stated: "In the last decade, a broad resistance to antibiotics has begun to emerge. And, because bacteria can transfer genes among themselves, experts only expect that the resistance will grow. The potential nightmare is a super-microbe immune to all antibiotics that could wreak havoc."

Traditional antibiotics continue to lose their ability to kill certain strains of bacteria. Nearly every disease-causing organism known has become resistant to one or more antibiotics. Scientists know that the more an antibiotic is used, the quicker it tends to become useless due to bacterial resistance. On the other hand, microbes cannot develop resistance to silver as they can to traditional antibiotics.

There are no recorded side effects in the medical literature from the use of ionic silver. Additionally, there has never been a recorded case of a drug interaction. It is non-addicting, the body does not build up a tolerance to it, and studies show that colloidal silver is not deposited under the skin like other silver protein compounds that may cause gray or bluish skin.

  • Ionic Silver will not cause argyria, a discoloration of the skin caused by some forms of silver. Argyria is caused by silver protein products.
  • Ionic Silver does not interact or interfere with any medications.
  • Contains only pure water and pure silver.
  • Tasteless liquid, like water.

    Dia-IonX™ Success Stories

    “I saw an immediate difference!!”

“I sought advice on the internet about symptoms my Pomeranian was having thinking it was diabetes and saw this site advertised. I have spent money before on supposed “flyers” so I offset the cost versus going to my Vet and that expense. I gave Taz the 30 drops the day I got it and have not looked back. I saw an immediate difference!!

Within 2 days my pet was no longer lethargic and was back to his old self. My faith in this product is such that I ordered the 5 bottles offer that week and will be re-ordering when my present supply runs out. Thanks so much for this wonderful product!!!”

    - Duke B, Arizona 07/02/10

“I ordered more today and I’ll keep Tigger on Dia-IonX forever.”

“The vet said my doxie (Tigger) was pre-diabetic. I started noticing signs, weight gain, excessive thirst. I didn’t want to put him on shots every day, so I googled “dog’s diabetes” and found your site. He’s been on the Dia-IonX for three months now and I noticed a big difference. Lost weight, and not as thirsty.

I ran out of the product over a week ago and I noticed he is starting to get thirsty. He has been licking moisture off grass again, which he has not been doing when on Dia-IonX. I am soooo happy with this product, I guess running out taught me a lesson. I ordered more today and I’ll keep Tigger on Dia-IonX forever. Thank you for making this available for pets.”

    - Marilyn L, Florida 05/13/10

“The change in her has been nothing short of miraculous!”

“I just wanted to give you an update on Panda. We have now finished the first bottle of Dia-IonX. I have been giving her 1/2 teaspoon twice a day. On Sunday she will have completed the two weeks on that dosage.

The change in her has been nothing short of miraculous! She is almost back to her old self. She will be 11 the end of this month.

She is still drinking more than she should and peeing more than she should. However, it is less than before she went on it. She is also eating very well, has energy, is not sleeping all the time, is going for walks again, not throwing up and is even playing with her toys once in awhile.

In May I am going to take her for another blood test to see how her levels are. I am very pleased with your product.

    - Shelia R, Canada 04/12/10

“I am so happy to see the life come back in him.”

“I would like to thank you, my little Mini Pin’s blood sugar has dropped quite a bit since I started him on this. I am so happy to see the life come back in him. He is back to his old self again. Thanks once again for the help no one else could seem to help with.

Since I have been giving him the diabetic formula his water intake is less and also the trips outside.

I am very impressed with this product and so glad I tried it.”

    - Tina W, Virginia 03/09/10

Just like humans, dogs can develop diabetes. In fact, diabetes is becoming so common, it is now believed that one of every ten dogs in the world suffers from diabetes. There are two types of diabetes that affect dogs: diabetes insipidus and diabetes mellitus.

Diabetes insipidus is caused by a lack of the hormone that controls water resorption by the kidneys. Diabetes mellitus, the more common of the two types, is caused by a resistance to and lack of insulin similar to the human form of type II diabetes. Both types of diabetes are the result of defects in the hormone production in the body, though diabetes mellitus can be the result of an underactive lifestyle.

Dogs typically get diabetes when they are older, usually between the ages of seven to nine years old. The reproductive hormones place un-spayed female dogs at a higher risk than their male counterparts. Diabetes in dogs is often hereditary; if a dog’s parents had diabetes, it is more likely that their offspring will also develop diabetes. There are some dog breeds that are more susceptible to developing diabetes, such as Golden Retrievers, standard Poodles, miniature Pinschers and many more.

    Causes of Diabetes in Dogs

In addition to predispositions to diabetes, dogs may also develop diabetes caused by different diseases. Certain diseases, especially diseases affecting the pancreas, may trigger abnormal production of the hormone insulin in your dog’s body.

Once your dog’s normal insulin process is disrupted, it will be much harder for your dog’s body to manage glucose and blood sugar levels, and your dog’s cells will have to work harder to receive the energy (glucose).

This is the point at which diabetes occurs in the dog and they may suffer from increased urination, excessive thirst, constipation, fatigue, indigestion, and dry mouth. Over time, the symptoms and degeneration of the body caused by diabetes can be life-threatening to dogs.

The use of steroids in your dog may also be a contributing factor to developing diabetes. Steroids are known to affect the normal functions of the pancreas and can lead to under production of insulin. Dogs that are given steroid shots on a regular basis can eventually develop diabetes.

Healthy Lifestyle Tips for Dog with Diabetes

Because obesity in dogs can lead to diabetes just as it can in people, dogs with diabetes need food and exercise that meets their optimal nutrition and activity needs.

Dog food should be chosen based on your dog’s age and physical condition. A ready-made option should be low-fat and low-carb, while providing a high protein and vitamin content. Check that the fiber content is high enough for your diabetic dog. You should avoid dog foods that are mostly carbohydrates and semi-moist dog foods that are usually high in sugar.

When you can, prepare your dog’s meals at home. This can save you money and possibly prevent future vet visits. The main components of a fresh prepared meal for your diabetic dog are:

    • Skinless and cooked lean meats
    • Par-boiled brown rice
    • Mixed vegetables
    • Eggs
    • Diabetic dog biscuits.

The ideal feeding schedule should be in sync with any medical treatments for the dog. Be careful not to overfeed.

Exercise is a sure fire way to reduce the obesity and diabetes symptoms in dogs; plus it is good for the owner to get exercise too!

Start off easy if your dog hasn’t been exercising much; go for short walks, preferably several times a day. Make sure your dog is properly hydrated before and after the walk, and wait to feed until after the walk, once they your dog has had some water and has stopped panting.

These simple lifestyle changes will greatly improve your diabetes management program and quality of life for your dog. Still, you may find your dog needs daily blood sugar support, as well as relief of irritating diabetes symptoms such as dry mouth, increased thirst or appetite, fatigue, indigestion, increased urination and constipation.

Dia-IonX™ is a homeopathic/oligatherapeutic complex that works with the body to naturally promote healing over time, and can provide fast relief of diabetes symptoms. Dia-IonX™ is a bio-available liquid formula that is easy to administer to your dog without causing stress, and is quickly and effectively absorbed into the body for fast, safe relief.

Start your dog down the path to optimal health through regular exercise, a quality balanced diet and Dia-IonX™, and your dog will be moving toward the healthy lifestyle you both deserve.

Your Simple Solution to Whole Body Wellness

A few decades ago, women’s health was a topic that the medical community did not discuss freely. Today, from research to products, women’s health is a thriving industry and business.

While all of this awareness has been a positive boon drawing attention and research dollars to women’s health issues, it is also increasingly more and more difficult for a woman to determine what she needs to eat, drink and take to be at her best. And nowhere is this more relevant than in the field of women’s supplements.

Walk into any health food store or log on to your favorite online wellness retail store and you’re bombarded with products that promise to help you do everything from stave off cancer to prevent bone loss.

If you find yourself having to make endless trips back and forth between the supplement store and receiving counsel from your doctor, you’re not alone. But these days, time is precious and filtering through the latest in medical research is a painstaking process. If you have often wished for someone to do the work for you and simply select just the right supplements to meet your health needs, then those wishes just came true.

Evamist Hormone Spray May Cause Illness in Pets

    From - http://www.fda.gov/AnimalVeterinary/NewsEvents/CVMUpdates/ucm220420.htm

    July 29, 2010

The Center for Veterinary Medicine would like pet owners to know that Evamist (estradiol transdermal spray), a topical hormone replacement product, sprayed on the forearm to reduce hot flashes in women during menopause, has the potential to cause health problems in pets exposed to the product on the owner’s skin.

Since Evamist’s approval in 2007, FDA’s Center for Veterinary Medicine (CVM) received two reports of dogs experiencing mammary, or nipple, enlargement and vulvar, (external genital) swelling. In one case the dog experienced liver failure and vaginal prolapse and in the other case the dog had elevated estrogen levels.

In both cases, the owners had been applying Evamist spray to their forearms. Secondary exposure to the pets likely occurred when the dogs licked the owner’s arms, or while the dog was held by the owner. Small pets (dog, cat, pocket pet) may be especially sensitive to the estrogen in Evamist.

To help prevent estrogen exposure to a pet, FDA suggests that women using this product wear long sleeves to cover the application site and prevent pets from licking or touching the arm where Evamist was sprayed. Small pets may be especially sensitive to the estrogen in Evamist and may exhibit signs associated with excessive levels of estrogen. This would include signs such as swollen vulva and nipples, vaginal bleeding, and vaginal prolapse. If your pet's skin or fur is accidentally exposed to Evamist, it may help to bathe the animal with shampoo and water to remove any residual product.

If you are using Evamist and your pet shows any of these signs, or other illness, contact your local veterinarian.
