The Flu Vaccine: Allopathic vs. Natural

Which works best for you? The subject of flu vaccination has caused its fair share of debate in recent years. Should one use conventional means to support the immune system, or look to nature to provide protection? We look at the potential risks of allopathic flu vaccination and investigate the advantages of the natural approach…

Every year winter brings along with it a variety of influenza viruses that are constantly changing – stopping our body from building up a natural defense against it. In the United States, there has been a marked increase in flu vaccine recommendations – with children aged 6 months to 5 years being vaccinated against the flu.

Researchers question the alarming lack of evidence for promoting vaccinations for children under the age of two. In addition, papers published by the same researchers found that the conventional flu vaccine is only mildly effective in treating the portion of the population most urged to get a vaccination – the elderly. Overall, it was concluded, that influenza vaccines have little or no effect on many influenza campaign objectives, such as hospital stay, time off work, or death from influenza and its complications.

There are other problems and side effects associated with the conventional flu vaccine. Allopathic flu shots and oral vaccines contain live virus – that can cause mild flu-like symptoms and even severe allergic reactions and have also been associated with the development of Guillain-Barre Syndrome (GBS). It is always advisable to weigh up the benefits against the disadvantages when making the choice of whether or not to be vaccinated in a conventional manner.

Natural methods to help avoid the flu

So what is the alternative to the conventional flu vaccine? Often we find ourselves dealing with the symptoms of flu as they hit us mid-winter with a vengeance. But the best line of defense is prevention. Symptoms of cold and flu are anything but pleasant, so it makes sense to do as much as we can before the cold and flu season – giving us a better chance of escaping the sniffles and sneezes. Having said this, it is also never too late to help the immune system and provide protection against the current flu strain.

From a naturopathic point of view, frequent vaccination can weaken immune functioning and ultimately lead to ill health and more serious illnesses. Some people are not able to have a flu vaccination due to allergies or other conditions. (Flu vaccines are prepared on chicken embryos and are therefore not safe for those with egg and chicken allergies.) Whether or not you have yourself vaccinated, it is important to know that there are other choices that are equally effective without the side effects associated with conventional flu vaccines.

One option is a homeopathic preparation of the current flu virus as a flu vaccine – either together with the conventional vaccination for extra protection (and relief from the side effects of conventional vaccines) or as a standalone option.

Prevention is better than cure! Here are some tips to support your immune system:

Exercise: As little as half an hour a day of gentle exercise can help fight flu. Research suggests that moderate daily exercise can help fend off the common cold. A study found that walkers experienced half the number of ‘sick days’ of cold symptoms as non-exercisers.

Food for Fighting the Flu: The correct eating plan can greatly reduce the risk of colds and flu and has the added benefit of helping us stay in shape during winter months when we are tempted to overindulge. Foods to boost your immune system include: Oranges, grapefruit and tangerines (packed with protective nutrients such as vitamin C, bioflavonoids and anti-oxidants that help to ward off winter colds and flu), Butternut, pumpkins and squash (these are all great sources of beta-carotene, one of the most powerful antioxidants in our winter protection pack), yoghurt, fish, (a fantastic source of zinc and the omega-3 fatty acids), Oysters (a great source of zinc) and herbal tea (Chamomile tea in particular has been applauded for its strong antibacterial properties – explaining why the tea has long been attributed as a cold fighter).

Can Your Pet's Get Sick?

It’s cold, wet and dreary outside as you thaw in the heat of a crackling fire warming your home. At your feet, your pets are curled up tightly, sleeping and content. Just like humans, pets feel the colder climate, and the fact remains that our animals need immune protection as much as we do – whatever the weather!

The truth is that the immune system of a dog or a cat is as complex as the immune system of a human. Your pet’s immune system has one goal: to keep the body safe and healthy from infection and disease. When an animal’s immune system is rundown, he or she is open to disease.

What causes the immune system to become rundown?

Factors such as poor nutrition (inadequate minerals and vitamins and/or too many additives from food), neglect/abuse or stress, environmental pollutants as well as infection and bacteria are the main culprits.

Remember that our pets rely on us completely – we control what they eat! For example, you may try giving Miniature Schnauzers more vitamin A foods (carrots and spinach) to guard against bladder or kidney stones, as they have particularly acidic systems. Vitamin B-12 deficiency is often prevalent in Giant Schnauzers, so choose foods rich in this vitamin (liver, lentils, brussel sprouts, broccoli, and cabbage are good sources). Other minerals that play an important role include zinc, selenium and vitamin E, vitamin B-6 and linoleic acid.

If you intend to give your pet supplementation with vitamins and minerals, consult a professional nutritionist or speak to your vet. Please note that this is NOT a substitute for premium quality dog foods.

Can dogs and cats get colds, and how are they treated?

Yes… although not the type of colds that we as humans contract! In cats, the most common “cold” is viral (calcivirus), while the most common “cold” that dogs are prone to is kennel cough, a highly contagious respiratory infection. Signs in cats may include sneezing in rapid succession (sometimes called snuffles), whereas a dog may develop a cough.

Conventional antibiotics are used for more severe viral infections, with natural medicine providing additional support. Natural remedies have been shown to be beneficial in providing symptomatic relief, boosting the immune system and supporting the overall health of your pet. Herbal and homeopathic treatments are safe and gentle to use for dogs or cats, without unwanted side effects.

Following good nutrition and hygiene are also very important during the recovery process. In addition, your pet should also get plenty of exercise in the fresh air and sunshine. Be sure to limit your pet’s contact with strays, as they may be carriers of germs and disease.

BootsnbarkleyFOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE - September 21, 2012 - Kasel Associated  Industries of Denver, CO is voluntarily recalling its BOOTS & BARKLEY 6  COUNT 5 INCH AMERICAN BEEF BULLY STICKS product because it may be contaminated  with Salmonella. Advertising At It's Best - Purina's Be Happy Dog & Cat Food

BeHappy_PurinaPage_BothPurina came out with a new food and new website - Purina Be Happy Dog & Cat Food

The pet food claims "it helps keep them healthy on the inside, and happy on the outside."  Can a pet food really make your dog or cat happy?

This new pet food - Be Happy - is a product of Purina Pet Foods. The Be Happy website states "For us, pets are the true happiness heroes. When we watch a dog chase his tail or a cat soak up the sun, we remember that there’s more good in the world than not, if you just know where to sniff it out! That’s why we created new Be Happy pet food to spread our pets’ instinctual happiness. With a scrumptious taste, it helps keep them healthy on the inside, and happy on the outside. Who doesn’t love that?"

Ok, sounds good, right? Who wouldn't want their pet to be happy and especially a good that keeps them healthy on the inside................STOP! Ok, enough of the lovey dovey stuff, let's take a real look at the ingredients and then you tell me how happy that dog or cat would be....

Be Happy Beef Flavor Dog Food
Ground yellow corn, ground wheat, soybean meal, beef and bone meal, animal fat preserved with mixed-tocopherols (form of Vitamin E), egg and chicken flavor, corn gluten meal, animal digest, propylene glycol, phosphoric acid, sugar, salt, potassium chloride, sorbic acid (a preservative), calcium propionate (a preservative), choline chloride, tricalcium phosphate, Red 40, zinc sulfate, Vitamin E supplement, ferrous sulfate, Yellow 5, manganese sulfate, Blue 2, niacin, Yellow 6, Vitamin A supplement, calcium carbonate, copper sulfate, Vitamin B-12 supplement, calcium pantothenate, thiamine mononitrate, garlic oil, pyridoxine hydrochloride, riboflavin supplement, Vitamin D-3 supplement, calcium iodate, menadione sodium bisulfite complex (source of Vitamin K activity), folic acid, biotin, sodium selenite.

Be Happy Poultry Pair-adise Cat Food Ingredients
Ground yellow corn, corn gluten meal, soybean meal, chicken by-product meal, meat and bone meal, animal fat preserved with mixed-tocopherols (form of Vitamin E), animal liver flavor, phosphoric acid, calcium carbonate, turkey by-product meal, salt, choline chloride, potassium chloride, taurine, zinc sulfate, ferrous sulfate, Vitamin E supplement, DL-Methionine, Yellow 6, niacin, manganese sulfate, Red 40, Yellow 5, Vitamin A supplement, calcium pantothenate, copper sulfate, thiamine mononitrate, Vitamin B-12 supplement, riboflavin supplement, pyridoxine hydrochloride, Blue 2, Vitamin D-3 supplement, folic acid, calcium iodate, menadione sodium bisulfite complex (source of Vitamin K activity), sodium selenite, biotin.

Does the color RED make you happy? Red is usually a warning sign - listen to the sign and turn the other way!

Both of these foods contain the ingredients meat and bone meal and animal fat. FDA testing linked these two ingredients to the euthanizing drug pentobarbital.  This means these ingredients, per FDA testing, are likely to contain a rendered euthanized animal.

The cat food also contains by-product meals. Yes, meals are an excellent choice (when it is chicken meal, turkey meal, lamb meal) because all the water is taken out so you get the most amount of protein but you don't want by-products as your protein source. Also, how about that the first so called "meat" is listed 4th on the ingredient label - how much as you getting?

Both of these foods contain dyes.  Red 40 - per the Center for Science in the Public Interest report on food dyes titled Rainbow of Risks - "may accelerate the appearance of immune-system tumors in mice.  The dye causes hypersensitivity (allergy-like) reactions in a small number of consumer and might trigger hyperactivity in children."  The CSPI report goes on to say "Considering the safety questions and its non-essentiality, Red 40 should be excluded from foods unless and until new tests clearly demonstrate its safety."

The same CPSI report states "Blue 2 cannot be considered safe given the statistically significant incidence of tumors, particularly brain gliomas, in male rats.  It should not be used in foods."

"Yellow 5 was not carcinogenic in rats, but was not adequately tested in mice. It may be contaminated with several cancer-causing chemicals.  In addition, Yellow 5 causes sometimes-severe hypersensitivity reactions in a small number of people and might trigger hyperactivity reactions in a small number of people and might trigger hyperactivity and other behavior effects in children.  Posing some risks, while serving no nutritional or safety purpose, Yellow 5 should not be allowed in foods."

"Yellow 6 caused adrenal tumors in animals, though that is disputed by industry and the FDA.  It may be contaminated with cancer-causing chemicals and occasionally causes severe hypersensitivity reactions. Yellow 6 adds an unnecessary risk to the food supply."

Who cares about colors???? Your dog doesn't care if the food is blue, purple, red, etc! These colors are added to make the consumer choose this food because it looks fun and maybe healthy. Perhaps the blue bits are blueberries, yep keep telling yourself that.

Purina Pet Foods source ingredients from the US with the exception of supplements sourced globally including China.

Both of these foods contain corn and soy ingredients. Purina Pet Foods has stated their foods are not GMO free. Thus, we'd have to assume the corn and soy ingredients are sourced from genetically modified corn and soy. With corn and soy ingredients, we also have the worry of mold growth causing mycotoxin contamination.  A paper published in the International Journal of Food Microbiology states:
"One of the biggest issues of concern discussed, is that existing studies of mycotoxin contamination in pet food overlook the day to day consumption of small amounts of mycotoxins;  resulting in "chronic diseases such as liver and kidney fibrosis, infections resulting from immonosuppression and cancer."

So after reading this does this food make YOU happy? It sure better because it's not going to make your poor dog or cat happy!

Liver Disease in Dogs

Liver disease is fairly common in older dogs. There are many different causes of liver disease because the liver is an organ which is involved in many different physiological processes. The liver is one of the main detoxifying organs of the body. It processes and eliminates toxins from the blood, it is involved in making plasma proteins and it stores glycogen ( a form of sugar) for later use by the body. It is involved in the digestive process, immune system, and affects appetite and growth. In Chinese medicine, the liver is so important. it is referred to as “The General”, because the liver is in charge of many functions.

Liver disease can be primary or secondary. Primary liver disease is something that starts with the liver. Secondary liver disease starts elsewhere but does involve the liver.

Cause of primary liver disease can be drugs and toxins, trauma, infections ( either bacterial or viral), liver tumor or a congenital problem that the dog is born with. Secondary liver problems result from another disease that also effects the liver. Examples of this would include heart disease or heartworm disease, pancreatitis, diabetes, cancers ( spread from somewhere else in the body), or blood problems.

Symptoms of liver disease include increased drinking and urination, decreased appetite, depression and lethargy, vomiting and diarrhea ( stools may be white or orange), jaundice (a yellow colouring to skin and whites of the eye), and dark coloured urine. The abdomen may be swollen and the liver enlarged. In late stage liver disease, there may be seizures or the dog may shown severe confusion and appear drunk. If your dog has any of these symptoms you should consult your veterinarian immediately.

Diagnosis of liver diseases is by physical examination, blood test, x-rays and ultrasound. Sometimes a biopsy of the liver is needed to make a diagnosis.

Treatment of liver disease depends on its cause. If the cause is a bacterial infection such as Leptospirosis then an antibiotic will be needed. If the problem is a congenital shunt, then surgery is needed. If the liver was damaged by trauma, then hospitalization and rest may be required.

Regardless of the cause there are some dietary measures and supplements that are always helpful to support the liver while it recovers. S- Adenosyl or SAMe as it is called is a natural supplement frequently prescribed for liver disease. Herbs such as Burdock and Milk Thistle are frequently used. Milk Thistle is a great herb which helps detoxify the liver and stimulates the production of new liver cells. It is also a powerful anti-oxidant. Pet Wellbeing has a liquid form of Milk Thistle.  Vitamin E and Vitamin K are also helpful in the treatment of liver disease. Dietary therapy is also extremely important and a homemade balanced diet (raw or cooked) is often key to recovery.

Testimonials -

Charlies Angel

I use Flea the Scene on my Doberman Charley every time we go hiking, I've noticed that anything that flies and bites leaves him alone. After a few times in the woods I tried it on myself and what a difference it made. Chiggers, mozzies and flies all kept a safe distance and if they did decide to land they flew off just as quickly.

Thanks for such a great, pesticide free product from both Charley and me

I highly recommend the product!

I own a bug magnet.  No not the type that might be found on a refrigerator door holding this week's grocery list.  My bug magnet is a 62 pound black greyhound.  We live in Florida which is notorious for bugs that fly, crawl, jump, run or just leisurely stroll across the kitchen floor.  My BM seems to attract them all, but especially mosquitos and fleas.  I own the BM's sister and while walking through our subdivision when the mosquitos are bad, the BM will be swarmed by mosquitos while her sister, who is walking right beside her, will have only a few mosquitos bothering her.

I don't like to use chemical repellents, especially for a greyhound, so I began searching for an alternative.  I tried several before finding Flea The Scene.  What a godsend!  The formula is light, no greasy feeling, it smells good, there is no buildup of product and it works!  I highly recommend the product!

She actually likes the spray!

I live in Texas where there are plenty of critters to irrate a poor dog's skin.  Our dog, Coqueta, loves to play with her tennis ball for hours in our big backyard.   Unfortunately, the bugs also like our backyard, especially mosquitoes.  I tried many products with her and usually I would have to corner her and hold her down while I applied the lotion or spray.  If she saw me coming, she would run away.  I always felt bad because they were often smelly or sticky and I knew she didn't like them.  Worst of all, I didn't really like the non-organic ingredients.

That all changed when I bought flea-the-scene.  Now, I simply walk outside and show her the bottle and call her.  She comes romping up to me and let's me spray her back and belly.  This is not a trick where I fed her treats to train her.  She actually likes the spray!  Well, she is very intelligent, so I suspect she knows it is good for her, too.  The natural ingredients smell nice and do not leave her feeling sticky.  Best of all, it really does keep her free of fleas and mosquitos between baths.

I also use HT's oatmeal shampoo.  It's terrific.

      Thank you, Happytails!

STOP The Constant Painful Ringing & Buzzing In Your Ears!

Tinnitus Relief

Tinnitus is experienced by nearly everyone at one time or another, but is a persistent problem for nearly 40 million adults. It can drive a person crazy! Tinnitus may result in inability to concentrate, sleep or work. In addition, it may also be accompanied by other physical symptoms such as fullness in the ear, dizziness, nausea and headache. Ear Perfect homeopathic remedy may be the answer for you!

You may have seen doctors who tell you that there is no treatment for tinnitus and instead gave you medication for anxiety, depression or even muscle relaxants. Some may have even tested your ears and said there is no physical problem. They may have told you that it is all in your head and you should just get over it. More polite “experts” may have suggested that you can train your brain to ignore it. Others could suggested that you get a white noise machine or turn on a loud fan. Perhaps you have tried all of these methods and nothing has worked.

If you are one of the millions of adults still suffering from tinnitus, take heart. Unlike traditional medications which may be prescribed to help you relax, Ear Perfect is a natural homeopathic remedy which has virtually no side effects. Ear Perfect is a natural, homeopathic supplement system which has given relief to many chronic tinnitus sufferers. The ingredients contained in Ear Perfect drops and homeopathic pills have been used widely in Europe to treat and relieve tinnitus and the corresponding symptoms of anxiety, headache, insomnia, vertigo and fullness of the ear.

Here are some population facts about tinnitus to show that you are not alone:

•     Tinnitus affects about 17 percent of the general population around the world.
•     According to the American Tinnitus Association, more than 50 million people in the United States suffer from some degree of tinnitus.
•     Approximately 12 million Americans with tinnitus seek medical attention due to the frequency or severity of their symptoms.
•     Nearly two million of these people experience symptoms to the point that they are unable to function adequately at home or work.

Tinnitus Relief Remedy: Ear Perfect

The advantage of the Ear Perfect system is the unique combination of scientifically chosen homeopathic remedies which treats the symptoms of tinnitus from both the inside and the outside.  Ear Perfect also does not contain sedating medications or irritating herbal products as it is based on the system of homeopathic medicine which seeks to affect vital processes that have gone awry within the body.  As tinnitus has many causes, treating both the internal and external processes is the best way to achieve results and unlike most products, Ear Perfect does both.

Ear Perfect Tablets contain only natural ingredients. The 60 count bottle is made up of a unique 6 part blend of homeopathic remedies.

When taken twice daily as directed, Ear Perfect Tablets may relieve symptoms of tinnitus by working from the inside of the body.  The unique blend of homeopathic ingredients is designed to inhibit neuronal processes in both the ear and brain.

For maximum benefit, one tablet should be chewed slowly twice daily, allowing the tablet to dissolve in the mouth.  Most users of Ear Perfect have reported experiencing benefits within a few weeks, though some notice effectiveness in as little as 3 days.
