7 Spring Cleaning Tips For Your Pet’s Health

Winter is almost over and Spring is on its way in! Before you start the fun task of spring cleaning your home, you should first think about how your spring cleaning could affect your pet. Here are 7 simple spring cleaning tips for your pet’s health:

1. Household Cleaning Products

Most people automatically associate spring cleaning with the use of household cleaning products. But before you take out that shining floor cleaner, be sure to read the label very carefully as you do not want to hurt your pet. Almost all commercially sold cleaning products contain chemicals that are harmful to pets. Even if you do use such a cleaning product, think about this: You wash your floor with a chemically-laced cleaning product whilst your dog or cat is outside or in another room, thinking that the chemicals won’t hurt your pet….at least until the floor is dry. But what happens when your dog or cat comes back into the room? Each time they place their tongue on the floor (perhaps to lick up dropped food), they ingest a tiny portion of that chemical. Each time they lick their paws, they are ingesting some of that chemical cleaner as well. Remember, to always keep any type of chemical out of the reach of your pets.

2. Paints

Some homeowners like to put a fresh coat of paint on their house as part of their spring cleaning efforts. If you are one of them, then be sure to keep the paint away from your dog or cat. Sadly, solvents, paint thinners, and other mineral spirits, if swallowed by your pet, can cause severe irritation or chemical burns. This is true even if your dog or cat’s fur or paws come in contact with these types of paint products.

3. Pesticides and Fertilizers

Spring cleaning can also pertain to your garden and you might want to spray pesticides or herbicides onto your outside flowers and shrubs to prevent them from being chewed up by annoying little insects. However, before you do, you should first check to see if the pesticide you are going to use is pet-friendly. Most of them aren’t and are quite lethal to pets, and even if yours is not lethal, it could still cause long-term health problems for your dog or cat. Recent studies show that the use of most types of pesticides and herbicides is related to increased rates of specific forms of cancer in dogs. Just like pesticides, lawn fertilizers can also be very toxic to pets. Always follow the manufacturer instructions after you have applied it to your lawn before allowing your pets outside. If your dog or cat is exposed to any pesticide or fertilizer, you should immediately wash them with soap and water and call your veterinarian or poison control center. Remember to store pesticides, herbicides, and fertilizers in a safe place that is far out of the reach of your dog or cat.

4. Flower Planting

If you have a green thumb, you are most probably already planning out your flower beds and garden! Keep in mind that there are over 700 different varieties of plants and flowers that are poisonous to dogs and cats. Before you start planting those seedlings, first check to see if they are toxic to cats or dogs. For example, Lilies, Tulips, Daffodils and Morning Glory’s are quite lethal to pets.

5. Fleas

One of the most annoying creatures of springtime is fleas. These tiny, pinhead size bugs can grow very quickly and multiply as soon as they have latched onto your dog or cat. Springtime is the best time to start using preventative measures to avoid your dog or cat becoming flea-infested. Preventative measures will also help in keeping your home free of fleas as well. Avoid using commercial flea products as they contain chemicals that may result in liver damage for you and your pet. Instead, use Canine or Feline Target Spray for Fleas. It is an all-natural alternative that acts as an insect repellent to control fleas on your dog or cat. It can be used as a preventative measure as well as a treatment should your dog or cat already have fleas.

6. Pet Allergies

Springtime can cause on an onset of allergies for yourself, your dog and/or your cat as well. Make sure that any allergy medication that you are taking for yourself is kept stored away from your pets reach. Ironic as it is, almost every type of allergy that you can suffer from, your pet can also suffer from. A few examples of this would be allergic reactions to chemicals and drugs, contact dermatitis, insect bites and food allergies. If you suspect that your pet has developed an allergy, you can treat it by giving them Canine or Feline Nettle-EyeBright – an all natural supplement that helps to alleviate allergies by maintaining natural balance within your pet’s body as well as by stimulating their immune systems. (It can also be used to treat recurrent infections and fatigue.)

7. Beware the Mold

If your idea of spring cleaning means that you are finally going to clean behind your fridge or stove, then it is best to remember that the toxins that are thrown up into the air by removing mold from these places can pose a threat to your pets. Some mold produces mycotoxins, which can cause gastrointestinal, cardiac and neurologic side effects in pets. If do find mold anywhere in your house, it is best if you contact the Environmental Protection Agency to find out more on mold hazards, including safe cleaning and removal.

Do You Know What The Single Most Dangerous Health Threat Is To Dogs And Cats?

Weight Loss Food And Treats For Dogs www.AZJungle.com

According to Newtown Square, Pa.-based Petplan, its most frequently claimed conditions have one thing in common: obesity.

“It’s no surprise that the biggest health threat to pets in 2017 is obesity,” said Dr. Ernie Ward, Petplan veterinary advisory board member and founder of the Association for Pet Obesity Prevention. “When you consider that over half of the nation’s dogs and cats are now overweight or obese, it literally is a growing problem.”

This year, Petplan challenges pet parents to get out and get active with furry friends to avoid the extra “fluff” that can exacerbate many of Petplan’s most commonly claimed conditions, including:

Tummy troubles: Overeating can easily lead to vomiting and diarrhea, Petplan’s No. 1 claimed conditions year after year; in fact, Petplan sees an average of 900 claims every month just for stomach issues. The cost for relief averages at $850.

The Big C: There have been some indications that certain types of cancer are more common in overweight or obese pets, and that can put a bump in pet parents’ budgets—the average vet bill for cancer is $2,033.

A gimpy gait: Lameness, or general limping, is often caused by arthritis—and extra pounds mean extra stress on pets’ joints (and wallets—the average cost to treat lameness is $966).

Lifes Abundance Weight Loss Food For Dogs www.AZJungleNot-so bee’s knees: Pets who pack on pounds are also at a greater risk for cranial cruciate ligament (CCL) injuries from added joint stress and weak muscles. CCL injuries are the priciest of Petplan’s common conditions, costing an average of $3,480 to repair.

On the go: Several things can cause a urinary tract infection in pets, but obese animals may be more at risk because they can’t clean those hard-to-reach places. The average cost to treat UTIs? $590!

Matters of the heart: Obesity usually comes with high blood pressure, poor organ function and low levels of activity—all things that contribute to cardiac disease and an average $1,232.

Back attack: The long and lows (think dachshund and basset Hhound) are particularly prone to intervertebral disc disease, and added weight can increase their chances of developing the disease—and a $2,014 vet bill.

Unlike many of these conditions, pet obesity is 100 percent preventable and curable, according to Petplan.

“In addition to daily exercise, swap fatty treats for lower-calorie options, or better yet opt for praise and playtime instead of snacks,” said Dr. Ward. “And know your pet’s calorie count—ask your vet how many calories your pet needs each day, and stick to that number.”

5 Amazing Facts About Cats

Yes, cats are nothing like dogs: they are enigmatic, independent, sometimes aloof and always entertaining. Their completely unique natures are, in my opinion, their most endearing feature. It should come as no surprise that in addition to their one-of-a-kind personalities, they also have some pretty exceptional physical features and roles to play in our society. Here are just five of my favorite unique cat facts!

Top 5 Amazing Cat Facts www.NaturalCatFoodStore.com

1. Cats can use their mouth to smell

Have you ever seen your cat take a big sniff, then pull their mouth back in what looks like a sneer? That’s called the flehmen response, and it’s one of the wonderful, weird things that makes cats so unique. Cats have a special organ called the vomeronasal organ wedged up between the hard palate and the nasal septum. The vomeronasal organ is used to analyze pheromones, which is an important means of communication in the feline world. If you’ve ever gotten a good whiff of cat urine, you may make the same face … but unlike us, cats are actually gaining extra information from that stimulus.

2. Cats are well adapted to high-heat environments

Have you ever seen a cat pant? Hopefully not, because they aren’t supposed to. We all know that dogs use panting to dissipate heat, while humans sweat. Aside from a negligible number of sweat glands in the paws, cats do neither! Evolved from desert-dwelling creatures, cats have extremely efficient kidneys that can concentrate urine to a very high degree, meaning they can survive longer than other mammals with less water without becoming dehydrated. I watch my dark-coated cat Penelope seek out blocks of sunlight all the time … like many cats, she thinks “The hotter, the better!” Meanwhile my dog is laying on the coldest spot of floor he can find.

5 Amazing Facts About Cats www.NaturalCatFoodStore.com

3. You can’t top a cat’s night vision

Cats are unusual in that they have both predator and prey adaptations. One of their most unique features is their slit pupil, which allows the pupil to contract more quickly than the circular pupils of dogs and humans. This means they adjust more quickly to changes in ambient light. They also have the largest eyes of any mammal relative to their size! They have several other adaptations meant to ensure they can see well at night, including more rods in the back of their retina as well as a tapetum lucidum, a reflective layer of tissue that gives their eyes that eerie green glow.

4. Cats could have changed the course of history

In the Middle Ages, the Black Death swept through Europe, killing off an estimated 25% of the continent. The causative agent of bubonic plague, Yersinia pestis, was found to be carried by fleas who moved about the countryside on rodents. During the Spanish Inquisition, cats were condemned as evil and killed by the thousands. This cat depopulation allowed the rodent population to explode, extending the effects of the plague. Who knows how many lives could have been saved if only cats had been spared and out hunting the plague carriers.

5. Hissing is a unique feline vocalization

Have you ever heard a happy cat hiss? Probably not. Though not all cats hiss, those that do are invariably upset or frightened. Experts believe hissing may actually have evolved as a mimicry of a snake hiss, a way to warn someone that whatever they are doing, the cat is not at all happy about it. If you have a cat who hisses, consider yourself lucky! It’s a clear warning to stop whatever is upsetting them before they escalate to the next level, something usually involving claws or teeth.

Have You Heard Of The Luuup? It's A 3 Sifting Tray Litter System And The Easiest Way To Clean A Cat Box!

Ok cat lovers - this is FANTASTIC! Litter boxes can be such an eye sore and a pain to clean. The Luuup is more than a litter box. It's functional, stylish and most of all, inspired!

It's super easy to use! Check out these easy peasy instructions:

1.Stack the three sifting trays so that the rockers on adjacent trays alternate and overlap as shown.

2. Add between 15 lbs, (7 kg.) , of clumping cat litter , (to an approximate depth of 3” - 4", (7-10 cm). All cats are unique when it comes to the use of their litter box. Be mindful to maintain a litter level that allows urine to clump before reaching the bottom of the tray.

3. To clean, lift the top tray and the waste is separated from the clean litter. Keep the sifting tray low inside the bottom tray while sifting to minimize dust. Being gentle helps minimize clump breakage.

4. After disposing of any waste, check the tray to make sure no litter clumps have adhered to the plastic surface. Wipe the tray clean with a paper towel, as necessary. If ever any small litter clumps get stuck in the slots, remove them before placing the tray back in the stack.

5. Turn the tray 180 degrees and place it at the bottom of the stack. You’ll know the bottom tray is turned the right way when it matches the same orientation as the top tray in the stack.

6. Lift the two tray stack containing the litter by the outer edge of the lower tray. Gently place the stack in the bottom tray and you're done. If the bottom tray is stacked incorrectly, the litter will rock back and forth, instead of nesting together. Simply remove the bottom tray and return it to the correct position if this happens.

BAM! You're Done!

Spotlight on Feline Illness - FeLV and FIV

Five beautiful cats

The great thing about cats is that they are superb at being independent and social companions. Most cats enjoy spending time outside playing with other felines. As a pet parent, it is very important that you are aware of some possible dangers associated with having your cat freely roaming outdoors. Since the 1960’s, Feline leukemia virus (FeLV) and feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV) have been spreading amongst the feline population worldwide. While these two diseases are preventable, they are contagious and potentially fatal if they are not detected early enough. The good news is that vaccines are available to decrease the chances that your feline will catch FeLV or FIV.

FeLV is commonly referred to as the ‘friendly cat disease’ since it’s transferred via saliva. Your cat can catch FeLV through sharing water bowls or even grooming an infected cat. On the other hand, FIV is transmitted through bite wounds and cat fights. Since males tend to be more involved in territorial fighting they are at an even higher risk of catching FIV. It is imperative to note that these viruses cannot be passed on to humans, dogs or other pets.

Feline immunodeficiency virus closely resembles HIV in humans. The virus attacks your cat’s immune system and may not show any GrainFreeHealthyStartCats signs until several years later. Another sinister aspect of FIV is that the symptoms can mimic other common illnesses, making it even harder to detect.

FeLV is somewhat different in its plan of attack. Feline leukemia virus goes after your cat’s genetic coding. This maneuver allows the virus to continue to reproduce infected cells at an alarming rate. Some cats are able to eliminate the infection before becoming sick. Other cats will carry and spread the disease despite never getting sick themselves. This virus can hide in bone marrow until it eventually surfaces in the form of many general symptoms.

There are several warning signs associated with FeLV and FIV; however, not every infected cat will exhibit the same red flags. Your cat may initially develop a fever or become suddenly and extremely fatigued, important indicators that something may be wrong. Other chronic issues include respiratory infections, dental and gum infections, bone marrow issues and certain cancers. Also, if your kitty starts losing weight, having chronic diarrhea, or develops chronic infections of the skin and eyes, make an appointment to see your vet immediately.

Your vet will perform a SNAP test to accurately determine if your cat is infected with FeLV or FIV. The test is quick and requires only a small blood sample. FIV is predominantly diagnosed through this blood sample alone. A bone marrow sample, in addition to the initial blood sample, may be required to successfully determine a positive FeLV result.

Since FeLV and FIV are so complex, re-testing may be necessary. For example, if a kitten’s mother is infected with FIV or FeLV, the kitten may test positive at a young age. However, over time, their immune systems may be able to fight and overcome the infection, eventually resulting in a disease-free kitty. In contrast, if the FeLV virus is in the early stages and has not fully developed, it may not show up in the initial results. Later tests, further into the virus’ progression, will ultimately lead to a clear diagnostic result.

Early detection, treatment, and proper nutrition are essential for your cat to live as long and comfortably as possible. If your feline does test positive for FeLV or FIV, then they will require premium nutritional support since their bodies will be stressed and weakened from the virus. Make sure that the food you feed provides an optimal balance of vitamins, proteins, and antioxidants, to give your feline the best chance at maintaining strength and general well being. In cases like these, pet parents should strongly consider augmenting meals with nutritional supplements to further boost health and vitality.

If your cat tests positive for FeLV or FIV, I recommend that they make the transition to strictly indoor living. When immune systems are compromised, going outdoors could increase their risk for catching other viruses, parasites, or infections. Your cat will also be in harm’s way if they sustain any wounds from cat fighting or other traumatic events. Resulting injuries may not heal properly and might even become infected. You should isolate any infected cats or kittens from other cats to avoid further contamination. It is essential to test any new cats or kittens that you may be bringing home for FeLV and FIV.

As a feline pet parent it is great to provide your cat with the independence that they crave. However, you should pay close attention to any changes in the overall health or physical appearance of your outdoor cat. Early detection could be the key to saving your cat’s life.

Thank you so much for all you do to make the world a better place for companion animals.

Did You Know Dogs And Cats Need Fish Oil Specifically For Them?

The question we get most often is...Can my dog or cat take the fish oil I take or fish oil for humans? Life's Abundance has a fish oil that was specifically created for your dog or cat.

Not All Pet Fish Oils are Created Equal

Regular supplementation of long-chain omega-3 fatty acids (EPA and DHA) from fish oil can help support your companion animal’s healthy skin, coat, heart, brain eyes and joints. However, numerous supplements on the shelves today do not contain the optimal concentration of fish oil. In addition, many of these supplements are not tested by an independent laboratory to ensure purity and safety.

Ultra-Pure Fish Oil is Better

Our fish oils contain at least 30% EPA and DHA, an ideal concentration for the overall health of your dog or cat. The oil is in a triglyceride form, which is highly bioavailable and without added flavors so it has a natural taste that dogs and cats love.

Our liquid fish oil supplements are effortless to feed compared to gel capsules, which can be difficult to swallow and messy when rejected. The 2-oz. bottle has an easy-to-measure dropper and the 8-oz. bottle has an easy-to-use cup. (A triglyceride fish oil will not have any effect on the plastic dropper or measuring cup.)

Ultra-Pure Fish Oil offers outstanding value. For example, it cost only $.18 a day for a ten-pound cat and only $.37 a day for a 40-lb. dog on Autoship.

Dependable Quality

In its unpurified form, fish oil contains many environmental contaminants, some of which can be harmful to your pet’s health. To purify the oil takes many steps, each one adding to the cost of manufacturing. It is important to buy your fish oil from a company that not only says it purifies the oil, but one that is willing to share the test results from every batch made. It’s the surest way to know what you’re feeding is perfectly safe.

Ultra-Pure Fish Oil for pets are made in a human pharmaceutical facility … the same place as our Fish Oil for people. They are highly concentrated and ultra-pure. Like our Fish Oil for people, each bottle receives a nitrogen flush to remove oxygen from the bottle before it is sealed for ultra freshness. Plus, Ultra-Pure Fish Oils meet or exceed the highest standards in the industry for quality assurance. In fact, each batch of Ultra-Pure Fish Oil for pets is tested by an independent third-party organization (IFOS) and the results are posted right here so you can see the quality, concentration and purity that Ultra-Pure Fish Oil supplements offer.

Understanding And Dealing With A Dog Or Cat Who Is Stressed

Depressed Dog

Over the course of the last decade, there’s been ample evidence to support the idea that chronic stress plays a contributing role in a variety of medical conditions in humans. It may come as no surprise that researchers have similarly determined that long-term stress can be a factor in the medical and compulsive disorders of companion animals. Conditions such as feline lower urinary tract disease, inflammatory bowel syndrome, obesity, gastric dilatation volvulus (bloat), noise phobias and separation anxiety have all been found to have a chronic stress component in both dogs and cats (Luescher, 2003). Even so, compared to humans, relatively little research has been published regarding stress and its effects on companion animals.

Some presume that the effects of stress on dogs and cats are not much different than those on other non-human animals. But, it appears that they’d be wrong.

In the mammalian world, dogs and cats are unique due to the bonds they share with humans, marked by their social interactions and the human homes in which they commonly reside.

As dogs and cats have gradually changed from living in natural settings to co-habitating with humans, one might expect that they would have fewer stressors than their outdoor ancestors. However, the evidence seems to contradict this assumption. Some veterinarians argue that, even though environmental stress is lower for today’s companion animals (i.e., less risk of predation, starvation, etc.), overall stress levels are actually higher. Furthermore, current sources of stress - such as boarding, veterinarian examinations, long-term confinement in a crate, boredom, habitual inactivity and even the sounds of modern life - are ones against which dogs and cats may not have well-developed defenses and are often unavoidable.

Stress has been eloquently described as “the sum of all nonspecific biological phenomena caused by adverse conditions or influences ... include[ing] physical, chemical, and/or emotional factors to which an individual fails to make satisfactory adaption and that cause physiological tensions that may contribute to disease” (Campbell et al, 2004). Bodies manage stress through the autonomic nervous system and the endocrine system (referred to as the “hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis”). In general, the response of the autonomic nervous system is very rapid and specific, whereas the endocrine system adjusts more gradually and is broader in its effect.

In order to mount an adequate stress response, both the autonomic nervous system and the endocrine system require nutrients that can only be obtained through dietary intake. For example, the endocrine messengers (norepinephrine, acetylcholine, and cortisol) are synthesized by the body. However, in order for the body to create these messengers, it needs to obtain tyrosine, choline and acetate, as well as cholesterol and acetate … all from dietary sources. Synthesis of these endocrine messengers is also dependent upon ingesting nutrients such as zinc, copper and manganese, as well as significant amounts of vitamin C. In the autonomic nervous system, signal transmission is made possible by electrical activity in the nerve cells. Fueling this activity requires dietary intake of sodium, calcium and potassium. All of these elements are vital for normal nervous and endocrine system responses to stress.

As a holistic pet food formulator, I know that the way the body responds to stress and chronic disease might have predisposing nutritional factors, such as a nutrient deficiency, imbalance, or toxicity. A good formulator must know whether or not supplementation of a given nutrient can help a companion animal manage stress effectively.

In spite of how well you care for your dog or cat, it is still likely that they will encounter daily stressors. While unavoidable, it is possible to minimize the effects through a combination of exercise, nutrition and holistic treatments.

Substances like valerian, chamomile and inositol can help to soothe the jangled nerves of dogs. Pheromone diffusers and sprays are effective stress reducers for both dogs (D.A.P) and cats (Feliway). If your budget is tight, you can do pet massage at home to help relieve tension. To develop a program of stress reduction that’s uniquely suited to your companion animal’s needs, consider enlisting the help of an alternative-medicine or holistic veterinarian.

Perhaps most importantly, keep in mind that providing proper nutrition is vital for helping companion animals deal with stress and lead long, healthy and happy lives. In addition to feeding a high quality diet, feeding them a daily supplement is a simple way to ensure sufficient nutrients to maintain a healthy endocrine and nervous system, in turn helping to cope with any stress your pet encounters.

Thank you for all you do to make the world a better place for companion animals. Each and every one of you has my sincerest wishes for holiday full of joy, and a wonderful new year of health!

Flint River Ranch Officially Closes It's Doors February 15, 2016

In December Flint River Ranch announced it would be terminating the mlm/distributor portion of their business and would be selling via direct sales. This came as a shock to thousands of distributors who had helped them build them company. Today, February 15, 2016, Flint River Ranch is closing it's doors officially.

Are you a Flint River Ranch customer or distributor? If you or any of your friends are please take a look at www.NaturalDogFoodStore.com or www.NaturalCatFoodStore.com since today Flint River Ranch is closing it's doors.

Our food has never been recalled, formulated by a holistic vet and is delivered fresh to your door. We can't say enough good things about this company and it's products and have been feeding their foods, treats and supplements since 2003. The company itself was founded in 1999. There aren't a lot of companies that can say they've never had a recall and are this old.

They issued this email earlier today:

It is with heavy heart that I have to announce the closure of the Flint River Ranch Company at end of business today; February 15, 2016.   We have tried to overcome our challenges for these past 2 months, but we have been unable to garner the necessary support to return to normal operations as we had intended.

We thank our customers and cadre of Flint River Ranch Independent Distributors for their support and loyalty over these past 25 years. We have loved being a part of your pets lives and in a small way, making an impact on strengthening the nutritional offerings by this industry. Most pet products offered are much better now than where they were when we first started, we’d like to think that we were part of this improvement.

All official orders submitted to the Flint River Ranch Company before today have either been shipped out or we are in the act of canceling and refunding that order. If you ordered through a FRR Independent Distributor, you will need to contact them directly to find out the disposition of your order in question. Flint River Ranch can only be responsible for the official orders that we have actually had processed into our order system. Logging into your “My Customer Account” link at the foot of this page will take you into the Flint River Ranch data base where you can research to see if you have an order that has been “shipped” or “voided”. All voided orders either have been or if just received, will be refunded. Automatic shipments that were on file, we had product for and were to ship bythis Friday, have been processed for shipment.

I know that this is a shock and extremely disappointing to so many of you. We hate that we have made it more difficult on you for finding your pets nutritional needs. We are truly sorry for this difficulty.

We all wish to extend our gratitude to all of you for allowing us to be a part of your pet’s life…we have taken that responsibility very seriously over these years.

Warmest regards,

Kitty Play Time And Keeping Your Cat Active

Cats become bored easily, especially if left to their own devices. This is exactly why it’s so vital that they enjoy structured play times with their pet parents. Not only do they get to spend fun time with you, their primary caregiver, they get to exercise their bodies and minds.

In last month's episode of Pet Talk, Dr. Sarah provided us with fun and simple ways to tap into a cat's innate problem solving skills while helping avoid the behavioral and physical consequences of sedentary living. If you missed this video on making safe but fun DIY toys for cats, be sure to watch that next.

This month, Sarah’s back with more in-depth info on why it’s important for your cat to have regular play times. It’s partly due to their unique evolution, but also because their minds require stimulation for a long and healthy life.

Be sure to share this video with friends and family, especially if they are cat lovers.

The Special Bond Between Cats And Women

Girl playing with cat on rug

Have you ever wondered why women and cats have such strong relationships? Specifically, why some women (a very few, mind you) tend to collect large numbers of cats? While you’ve heard the term “crazy cat lady”, you never hear of “crazy gerbil ladies” or “crazy ferret ladies”!

In fact, some behavioral researchers wondered the same thing. A recently published study in the journal Behavioral Processes indicates the answer lies in a special bond that exists only between cats and women. Scientists from the Konrad Lorenz Research Station and the University of Vienna took a hard look at the behavioral interactions between 41 cats and their human companions, using individual personality assessments of both their human and feline subjects. Their findings might very well cause a paradigm shift in our understanding of these relationships.

Rather than being standoffish and selfish (as cats are often portrayed), the study showed that there was real attachment between cats and their pet parents. Of course, any cat parent will tell you these findings are not surprising in the least. As expected, the cats demonstrated food-seeking behavior, but the researchers also noted that cats and their people signaled each other when they wanted to receive or even give affection. Cats also demonstrated that they were able to keep track of how their physical and emotional needs were being met. Further, felines were more likely to remember kind gestures and respond to their human companion’s emotional needs if the human had previously responded to their own.

While these interactions were noted with both women and men living with cats, cats clearly approached women and initiated contact (i.e. jump in laps) more often than with men. In fact, a cat’s relationship with a woman mirrored that of a human-human bond more than a human-animal bond, in that cats could tell their humans when to feed and interact with them and the humans would do it! Like a human infant, cats were seen to control when they were being fed. It is interesting to note that a cat’s mewl for food sounds eerily like that of a human infant.

The results of the study showed that cats and their pet parents, particularly women, influence each other strongly. In some ways, they can actually control one another’s behaviors. "A relationship between a cat and a human can involve mutual attraction, personality compatibility, ease of interaction, play, affection and social support," said co-author Dorothy Gracey of the University of Vienna. "A human and a cat mutually develop complex ritualized interactions that show substantial mutual understanding of each other's inclinations and preferences." While I wouldn’t go so far as to say cats can manipulate women, the results of this study certainly provide food for thought.

Knowing that cats have a much shorter evolutionary history of living with humans than dogs makes these findings even more astounding! Is it possible that women who provide homes for many cats simply cannot help themselves? There are so many new questions! Obviously, this study only scratches the surface of the complexity found in human-cat relationships. So, the next time you interact with your cat, I challenge you to ask yourself who is really running the show.

Thank you for all you do to make the world a better place for companion animals.

How To Choose A Cat Or Kitten Food! Easy Tips To Help You Decide

With so many cat food choices, how do you know which one is right for your beloved furbaby? Here are some simple tips to help you decide. We also have some comparison's done and you can find those by clicking here.

See Beyond the Hype
The brand you feed is the most important decision you can make as a pet parent. Because your cat eats the same food every day, it’s her primary source of nutrition. And a superior cat food can help to foster a solid nutritional foundation, which can help sustain your cat over a long and healthy lifetime. As a caring pet parent, it’s important that you see through marketing ploys designed to mislead you about the quality of ingredients and their intended dietary benefits.

Additionally, some competing brands use wheat and wheat glutens, corn and corn glutens, as well as artificial food colors and preservatives. We never have, and we never will. That’s part of our commitment to you and your cat to provide the safest and most innovative nutritional formulas for a better life.

The Whole is Greater than the Sum of its Parts
While the top five ingredients of a given cat food provide the consumer with insight into the nutritional priorities of a pet food maker, they don’t tell the whole story. Every ingredient plays a critical part, which is why we provide a comparison based upon eight different quantitative measures. Furthermore, the secret to superior pet food lies in the formula itself – not only in the ingredients, but also in the proportions of those ingredients to one another.

The significance of the ratios cannot be understated. Life's Abundance long-time pet food formulator, Dr. Jane Bicks, stresses the importance of synergism, or the interaction of ingredients, because the proper proportions help to maximize the nutritional impact of a formula. As with any recipe, if you use the wrong ratios, you will get very different results.

With quality ingredients working synergistically with one another, you can be certain that you’re providing the very best for your companion animal.

Pet Food or Junk Food?
Not all pet food manufacturers have your cat’s best interests in mind. Unfortunately, many use ingredients that you would never knowingly feed your cat. Some intentionally attempt to mislead you with clever marketing, touting ingredients that sound appealing to you but are not actually suited to the nutritional requirements of cats. At Life's Abundance, we focus on what felines truly need to help ensure a lifetime of good health, rather than on making the cheapest possible product that might not fulfill your cat’s dietary needs.

Only Everything Wholesome
Our premium cat food recipe features safe and wholesome ingredients. But for a cat food to be considered truly exceptional, we believe it must meet several specific nutritional criteria. Not only should a cat food score well on the majority of eight distinct measures, it must score well on every measure. Even if one area is overlooked, you could be compromising your cat’s chances for wellness and longevity.

To account for the unique dietary needs of your cat, all of the following must be included in the formula: diverse array of high-quality proteins; healthy species-specific animal fat; a guaranteed amount of the antioxidant Vitamins A, C and E; a guaranteed amount of omega-3 fatty acids (for optimal benefit omega-3’s should be scientifically balanced with omega-6 fatty acids); prebiotics; a guaranteed amount of probiotics; and green foods. Furthermore, to minimize health risks, no wheat or wheat gluten or corn or corn gluten-based products should be featured.

If your current food doesn’t score well on every single one of these eight distinct measures, we strongly suggest that you feed your beloved feline Life’s Abundance.

A Tradition of Quality and Safety
Even though the quality and variety of ingredients provide insight to the strength of a food’s formula, they shouldn’t be your only consideration when choosing the right food for your cat. In fact, the process by which the food is made is equally vital. Life’s Abundance premium dry health food is prepared by a family-owned, third-generation pet food maker, where creating a high quality food is not only a priority and a family tradition, it’s an art form. Batches of food are produced in limited runs on a weekly basis, minimizing periods of storage and helping us to deliver the freshest-possible product to your front door.

What You Don’t Know Could Be Harming Your Pet
When you pick up a bag of cat food from a retail store, it’s impossible to know the history behind the product you’re holding. You don’t know how long it’s been on the shelf, or how long it lingered in the storeroom before being placed on the shelf. You don’t know how long it was stowed in a shipping container, subjected to temperature extremes. You don’t know how long it was stockpiled in a distribution center prior to shipping. In fact, many mass-produced cat foods are stashed away in tractor trailers without any form of climate-control for weeks, even months. And, you have no idea if proper handling of bags and pest-control are priorities for the packaging centers and warehouses where the product is bagged and stored.

Why does it matter that you can’t know the history of the retail product? As you might correctly guess, the way a cat food is stored can directly affect its nutritional value and safety. The bottom line is, just because it’s store-bought doesn’t mean it’s fresh.

Control over our Formulas from Start to Finish
At Life’s Abundance, we don’t leave factors that impact safety and quality to chance. Our commitment to providing your cat with a superior food goes well beyond the formula and the individual ingredients. To ensure the safety and quality of the final product, we exercise control, from preparation to packaging to storage.

As we mentioned before, Life’s Abundance Premium Health Food for Kittens and Adult Cats is prepared in small batches on a weekly basis. We test the quality of our foods to ensure the integrity of ingredients and to make sure the formula is adhered to. Immediately after each batch is prepared, it’s bagged and shipped directly to one of our three warehouses.

Our shipping departments take pride in the speedy yet careful handling of our products. When you place an order, your cat food is shipped via UPS or USPS, with an average transit time of only three business days.

Thanks to our strict adherence to quality and safety, we’ve created a streamlined process that, in most cases, means that the food that’s delivered to your door is only four to six weeks old.

The Smart Choice for Caring Pet Parents
While this comparison is by no means comprehensive, we offer this service as a way to start your quest for the best food for your cat. As a caring pet parent, we expect that you’ll have questions. And we’re ready to provide answers. As an existing or potential customer, you have toll-free access to our expert customer support staff, Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. Eastern Time.
