5 Basic Steps To A Happy New Year!

Behappy

2017 is FAST approaching and we know you want to be the best you can be in 2017! Are you ready to take control of your health and start making changes for the better?!?

1} Just Do It!

You may have heard the saying “SOMEDAY is not a day of the week!”  Stop procrastinating and commit to taking a small step every single day towards your health goals. Not drinking enough water? Add a glass in the morning and again in the afternoon. Eating too much sugar? Cut it down by 50%. Small steps = big gains in the long run!

2} Choose More Veggies

No matter what your health goals are, most everyone can benefit by adding more veggies to their diet. Try to add in at least one green vegetable to every single meal, and notice the difference. Better digestion, better skin, healthy blood sugar levels, weight loss and increased energy are just a few benefits of a plant-based diet!1

3} Be More Active

Being more active doesn’t necessarily mean hitting the gym. Meet a friend for a walk instead of sitting for a coffee to catch up. Stretch for 10 minutes every morning or evening before bed. Take the dog for a longer walk. Take a dance class or learn tai chi. Find an activity you enjoy and make it a part of your weekly routine!

4} Breathe Away Your Stress

Use the power of your breath to take control of any situation. By pausing to take a couple of deep breaths in and out, you can reset your nervous system and reduce your stress.2

5} Practice Gratitude

In positive psychology research, gratitude is strongly and consistently associated with greater happiness. Take a minute each morning to write down what you’re grateful for and notice how much happier your day is!

Scientists Say Ginkgo May Improve Memory Functions

New research shows that the herb, ginkgo biloba, may improve human performance on tasks requiring short-term memory.

These findings are detailed in a study from Australian and British scientists.

The study participants were given a ginkgo extract for fourteen days and showed improvements in memory-related functions, according to the results.

These functions included working memory and specific brain electrical activity, say R.B. Silberstein and five other scientists in the published study.

Silberstein and colleagues add that the nineteen healthy men who consumed ginkgo biloba tablets showed greater memory task accuracy and different brain waves.

For the memory task, participants who took the herb were handed an irregular polygon-shaped object. Then scientists allowed some time to pass by projecting different shapes on a screen for them.

Afterwards, the volunteers were handed an irregular-shaped object and were asked whether this object was the same as the previous object.

The study shows that the men who consumed ginkgo were 5.1% more accurate on that memory test than men who took the test after consuming only a placebo.

The research also indicates that there were differences in brain wave activity between the ginkgo group and the placebo group.

According to the scientists, brain wave activity was measured with electrodes that were applied to the scalp of the volunteers, men who ranged in age from fifty- to sixty-one years old.

The scientists determined that the volunteers who consumed ginkgo biloba had brain waves with increased amplitude, or strength, in brain regions related to task performance and IQ.

So, this herb shows promise for people who are interested in supporting memory functions.

How Natural Is Your Diet? It May Be Linked to Chronic Pain

Does your kitchen contain more processed foods like sugar-laden sweets and salty chips than fresh, natural fruits, veggies, and whole grains? According to a New York Times report, Americans purchase 787 pounds of processed food versus 602 pounds of fresh food annually.

If you suffer from chronic pain, a poor diet may be partially to blame. New studies show worsened symptoms for certain conditions, including fibromyalgia, migraines, and arthritis, for participants who consumed a high amount of artificial flavorings, sweeteners, and other food additives.

In addition, processed foods offer much less nutritional value, increasing the glycemic index of carbohydrates. This in turn leads to higher spikes in blood sugar and insulin levels.

Cut out the additives

The following list includes a few common additives you should try and avoid or limit consumption of:

  • Artificial Sweeteners: Aspartame and other sugar substitutes, which are a common ingredient in diet soda, has been linked to fibromyalgia and migraines.
  • High-Fructose Corn Syrup: Studies have shown that some people have intolerance for this sweetener, often used in packaged foods, which can cause chronic abdominal pain and other digestive disorders.
  • MSG. This flavor-enhancer has been linked to chronic pain, as glutamate (a component of MSG), can destroy nerve endings when excessively consumed, according to Barbara Mendez, MS, RPh, a pharmacist and nutritional consultant in New York. Be cautious when reading labels, as this ingredient can also be named glutamic acid, yeast extract, hydrolyzed protein, sodium caseinate, and autolyzed yeast.
  • Preservatives. While chemicals keep food from spoiling, they can also cause harm to health. Baked goods are particularly high in preservatives, so try to opt for fresher alternatives, like swapping lettuce for bread slices, or baking your own.

How to Manage Gout

Gout is a type of arthritis that results from the deposit and buildup of glass-like crystals of uric acid in your joints. Uric acid is a by-product of the breakdown of certain proteins. Normally, uric acid is broken down in the bloodstream and then eliminated in the urine.

It is estimated that over 2 million Americans have gout. A severe gout attack is extremely painful and, if left untreated, can cause permanent and severe joint damage. Fortunately, gout can be managed or controlled.

First things first: risk factors
Are you at risk for gout? Although gout can occur in men and women of any age, it most often occurs in men over age 40. Gout usually does not affect women until after menopause. Lifestyle factors increase the risk of gout, including being overweight, fasting or crash dieting, drinking alcohol in excess and eating a diet that includes foods high in purines (proteins which make up uric acid):
Organ meats (e.g., liver, kidney, brain, sweetbread, heart)
Fish roe
Mussels
Anchovies
Herring
Sardines
Legumes (e.g., dried beans, peas, soybeans)
Meat extracts
Consommé
Gravies
Mushrooms
Spinach
Asparagus
Cauliflower
Poultry

Drinking high-fructose beverages, like sugar-sweetened sodas and orange juice can dramatically increase your risk of gout. There appears to be a genetic component as well, but not a large one. Six percent to 18% of people who have gout have relatives who also have gout. (In a small number of people, the risk of gout is increased by an enzyme defect that interferes with the way the body breaks down purines.) That means that 82% to 94% of the people with gout do not have a genetic link to the disease; it is primarily a lifestyle issue.

Certain medications can increase the risk of gout. These include:
Diuretics
Salicylates and medicines made from salicylic acid (such as aspirin)
Caffeine, including medicines containing caffeine
Levodopa (used in the treatment of Parkinson's disease)
Aminophylline
Withdrawal of corticosteroid medications
Cyclosporine (used to help control rejection of transplanted organs)
Niacin in doses of 1000 mg per day may trigger an attack in someone with gout

In addition, surgery, trauma, and cancer treatments such as radiation or chemotherapy may also increase your risk of developing gout.

It is possible to develop gout with or without the risk factors listed above. However, the more risk factors you have, the greater your likelihood of developing gout. If you have a number of risk factors, ask your doctor what you can do to reduce your risk.

Reducing uric acid.....
It is known that Vitamin C reduces uric acid in people with gout – and there is simply no better form than Dr. Libby’s Vital C™. As little as 500 mg of Vitamin C daily can help the body reduce uric acid levels over time and a Vital C flush is a common solution recommended by Dr. Libby for people with gout. Folic acid is also a time-honored solution for the symptoms of high uric acid. And, according to legendary naturopaths Dr. Murray and Dr. Pizzorno, essential fatty acids like those found in OmegaPrime® can also be very useful.

Fish Oil Reduces Prostate Cancer Growth in Humans

November 13, 2011 - Byron Richards, CCN

Researchers at UCLA's Jonsson Comprehensive Cancer Center have proven that fish oil combined with a low fat diet can reduce the number of rapidly dividing prostate cancer cells. This is important because many men don't even know they have prostate cancer and others are trying to change their lifestyles and curtail the problem as part of medically supervised surveillance. This study is clear cut proof that fish oil is a potent anti-prostate cancer nutrient.

The participants ate a 15% fat diet along with 5 grams of fish oil per day (around 1000 mgs of DHA Docosahexaenoic acid Essential omega 3 fatty acid integral to the health of all cell membranes, nerve and brain function. Must be gotten through the diet via cold water oceanic fish or some very limited plant sources or taken as a supplement.). We know that the fat you eat ends up in your cell membranes and then influences the function of those cells. Too many omega 6 oils (such as corn and soy oil) relative to a lack of DHA Docosahexaenoic acid Essential omega 3 fatty acid integral to the health of all cell membranes, nerve and brain function. Must be gotten through the diet via cold water oceanic fish or some very limited plant sources or taken as a supplement./EPA Eicosapentanoic acid. Type of long chain essential fatty acid - Omega 3 oil. Works in concert with DHA. Must gotten through food sources such as deep cold water fish or some limited plant sources or taken as a supplement. , tilts the cell membranes into a more inflammatory condition that assists cancer growth. The typical Western high fat diet, high in omega 6 oils, and lacking in omega 3 fish oils, has been hypothesized to create such problems. This study actually proves it does.

The men in this study had been diagnosed with prostate cancer. Some took the fish oil and ate low fat and others continued their Western diet for four - six weeks until their surgery to have their prostate removed. Their prostate cancer cells were then re-evaluated following the surgery. Those taking the fish oil were shown to have higher amounts of the omega 3 oils in their healthy prostate cells as well as their prostate cancer cells, proving that the oil that was consumed actually made it into the prostate gland.

Furthermore, those taking the fish oil had fewer rapidly dividing cancer cells. "The finding that the low-fat, fish oil diet reduced the number of rapidly dividing cells in the prostate cancer tissue is important because the rate at which the cells are dividing can be predictive of future cancer progression," said lead author Dr. William Aronson. "The lower the rate of proliferation, the lesser the chances that the cancer will spread outside the prostate, where it is much harder to treat… We are extremely pleased about our findings, which suggest that by altering the diet, we may favorably affect the biology of prostate cancer."

A great deal of human suffering could be avoided simply by ensuring an adequate intake of omega 3 fatty acids.

Fish Oil Helps Prevent Osteoarthritis

November 14, 2011 - Byron Richards, CCN

New research has shown for the first time that omega-3 in fish oil (DHA Docosahexaenoic acid Essential omega 3 fatty acid integral to the health of all cell membranes, nerve and brain function. Must be gotten through the diet via cold water oceanic fish or some very limited plant sources or taken as a supplement./EPA Eicosapentanoic acid. Degenerative joint disease. Most common type of arthritis that causes a chronic, progressive, breakdown in cartilage in middle-age adults and older.. "There was strong evidence that omega-3 influences the biochemistry of the disease, and therefore not only helps prevent disease, but also slows its progression, potentially controlling established osteoarthritis Degenerative joint disease. Most common type of arthritis that causes a chronic, progressive, breakdown in cartilage in middle-age adults and older.," said lead researcher Dr John Tarlton.

The research was conducted in a strain of guinea pigs that naturally develop osteoarthritis Degenerative joint disease. Fish oil intake reduced the pathology of tissue damage associated with osteoarthritis Degenerative joint disease. Most common type of arthritis that causes a chronic, progressive, breakdown in cartilage in middle-age adults and older. towards those without the problem. Medical research director of Arthritis Research UK, Professor Alan Silman, said: "The possibility that omega-3 fatty acids could prevent osteoarthritis Degenerative joint disease. Most common type of arthritis that causes a chronic, progressive, breakdown in cartilage in middle-age adults and older. from developing has been a tantalising one. Some limited, previous research in dogs has suggested that we were a long way away from understanding the potential use in humans. However, this current research in guinea pigs is exciting as it brings us closer to understanding how omega-3 might fundamentally interfere with the osteoarthritis Degenerative joint disease. Most common type of arthritis that causes a chronic, progressive, breakdown in cartilage in middle-age adults and older. process, and that it could potentially be taken as a treatment."

I have been reporting that new science shows that DHA Docosahexaenoic acid Essential omega 3 fatty acid integral to the health of all cell membranes, nerve and brain function. Must be gotten through the diet via cold water oceanic fish or some very limited plant sources or taken as a supplement. and EPA Eicosapentanoic acid. Must gotten through food sources such as deep cold water fish or some limited plant sources or taken as a supplement. regulate the inflammation recovery process through a system of compounds called resolvins and protectins. The ability to recover from inflammation is required to keep up with wear and tear and prevent for every body structure. This study shows just how important these nutrients are to long term joint health.

Vitamin D and Your Brain

by Brazos Minshew, TriVita's Chief Science Officer

I recently read an article in the medical and scientific literature that discussed the role of Vitamin D in the human brain. The article correlated the low levels of Vitamin D in the bloodstream with high levels of anxiety, depression, obsessive-compulsive disorder and oppositional-defiant disorder. The most important discussions, however, were about the role of Vitamin D in two plagues: autism and Alzheimer's disease.

Autism

The number of people diagnosed with autism is increasing at an epidemic rate. Greater than 1 in 150 children born today will have autism. The gender rate is also alarming: Boys are four times more likely to be diagnosed with autism than girls.

No one can agree as to the cause of autism. This may be because there is more than one cause. In fact, the last time I counted there were 11 suspected causes. However, two things that nearly all children have in common are poor methylation (inability to use Vitamin B-12 to create whole proteins) and poor hydroxylation (inability to convert inactive Vitamin D into its active form).

The most common cause for these defects is toxicity: environmental toxins and/or geno-toxins (poisons created by abnormal genes).

Alzheimer's disease

There are three characteristics of Alzheimer's disease in the human brain: neurofibrillary tangles, beta-amyloid plaques and glial cell inflammation. Interestingly, some people with plaques and tangles - but no inflammation - appear to function normally into their advanced years. It is brain inflammation that seems to be the spark which lights the fire of Alzheimer's disease.

Vitamin D may help reduce inflammation in the brain. A notable attribute of Alzheimer's disease victims is low levels of Vitamin D.

The same two problems that exist in children with autism also afflict adults with Alzheimer's disease: poor methylation (inability to use Vitamin B-12 to create whole proteins) and poor hydroxylation (inability to convert inactive vitamin D into its active form). Methylation is measured by a blood test for homocysteine. And one of the ways to measure hydroxylation is with a blood test for Vitamin D.

Are autism and Alzheimer's disease related? At this point it is hard to say; perhaps it is even impossible to say that they are connected conditions. But they share remarkably similar imbalances in biochemistry and they share at least two common deficiencies: Vitamin B-12 and Vitamin D.

Certainly, it would be an amazing coincidence if they were not somehow linked, don't you think?

Conclusion

In the 1990s I was overwhelmed by the mountains of evidence linking homocysteine to the increase in autism and Alzheimer's disease. This was eventually linked back to a methylation defect that led to poor protein formation and Vitamin B-12 metabolism. Now, we are seeing new mountains of evidence emerging about hydroxylation defects leading to poor hormone formation and Vitamin D metabolism.

We can say with greater certainty than ever before that these imbalances are caused by toxicity, deficiency, injury and stress. Let's increase our efforts to combat these "causes" and reduce the chance of being victimized by the effects!

10 Tips For Stress Management

Before embarking on a stress management system – you need to identify what stresses you! A good indication is thinking of stressful situations – sometimes just the word ‘heavy traffic’ can stress you and cause physical symptoms – perhaps your pulse quickens and you feel ‘bothered’. You may also keep a journal, and when you feel stressed – take note of your situation and surroundings.

1. Breathe!

A deep breath can help your mind in a very specific way, increasing oxygen to the brain and helping you to relax. It can also allow those few seconds where you need to step back and evaluate the situation. Count to ten, or take a short walk, get your lungs working and breathe in oxygen, and exhale your stress!

2. Move.

Exercise is one of the best ways to combat stress. It provides a great way to relieve tension and releases natural brain chemicals to help you relax and actually feel better! Even a 3 minute walk or jog, or simple stretching or Pilates can help relieve tensions.

3. Eat.

Eating the wrong food gives your body the wrong tools to fight stress. Vegetables and fruit are the best stress fighters! They contain anti-oxidants which fight free radicals in the body on a cellular level, so stock up on healthy foods that give you energy throughout the day – such as fiber rich oats and healthy energy bars. The ‘bad’ stress hormone, Cortisol, can actually be reduced by eating correctly.

4. Listen.

Playing your favorite songs or listening to soothing melodies can help your body to relax. Sound is a great motivator for the brain, and studies have shown that certain melodies and sounds can help the brain unwind during stressful times.

5. Talk or write.

The worst thing one can do is keep stress bottled up. Learn to talk about your stresses to friends, family, fellow religious leaders or even a therapist. If you find it hard to talk about your stress, keep a journal or write down your emotions.

6. Rest.

Sleep is key. Always take the time to rest and let your mind and body re-charge. Stress can build up to a point where lack of sleep is the ultimate straw to break the camel’s back! If you are not one for afternoon naps, have an herbal tea in a sunny spot, or cuddle with a pet. This not only helps to release stress and tension, but also helps you calm the heart’s pace and protect your immune system. Meditation can also work wonders – if you are unsure of how to meditate, consult your library or nearest natural health center.

7. Plan.

Organize. This is one of the most important ways to beat stress. When things are organized, you are more likely to feel in control, less likely to get flustered, and more likely to succeed. Don’t leave things till the last minute, and always ask for help or ask questions if you are unsure. Do the ‘hardest’ tasks first in your day – you will have more energy in the mornings. Keep a to-do list with you at all times – as the saying goes: “If you fail to plan, you plan to fail”.

8. Delegate.

Learn to say “No!” It may seem like a simple step, but learning to say no can be hard for some people. Trying to please everyone often means that you are the one who ultimately lands up compromising, and feeling stressed. Say no. If asked to do a task or take on a responsibility, look at your “to do list” for the day. If doing it means crumbling under pressure – SAY NO! Saying no is one of the hardest things in life, but you are more likely to do a good job of the things you can manage, than doing a shabby job of things of all the things you can’t do.

9. Follow the voice inside.

You’ll notice happy people are usually following their intuition – doing the things that make them feel happy in life. Structure your life around activities that you love – the more you go with the flow – the less likely you are to do the things that stress you to the point of no return! We only live once, and so spend your time happy, with the ones you love, and strive every day to follow your heart.

10. Nurture through nature.

Nature has held the key for thousands of years – think about it, when was the last time you heard of a tribal stress crisis?! That’s because, the ancient people relied on nature’s natural ingredients to help reduce stress levels and were better equipped to deal with daily triggers. Sure, they didn’t have computer viruses and four-lane traffic like we do today – but they had other stress culprits such as wild animals and food shortages to deal with! They knew the advantages of using nature’s tried and tested ingredients – herbal remedies such as Melissa officinalis, Lavender and Passiflora incarnata that have been shown in modern research to help soothe the nerves and help balance the mind and nervous system. These ingredients are still available today – and just as effective!

Do Certain Foods Influence Those With ADHD?

As ADHD is a controversial issue, the possible role that certain foods play in influencing the various symptoms of ADHD (and related behavior) is also a hotbed of discussion.

A number of diets have been suggested for children with symptoms of attention deficit disorder or ADHD. Various studies have reported behavioral improvement with diets that restrict possible allergens in the diet. As a parent or caregiver, you may want to discuss specific food plans with a health care professional, homeopath or naturopath and look at implementing an elimination diet of certain foods (eliminating certain foods and monitoring behavior to see if there is a direct link) or adding supplements that would not be harmful and that might help.

This is a very individualized approach and would differ from child to child. Always consult a nutritional expert before restricting the diet of any child. Elimination diets should only be used under the supervision of a clinical dietician to prevent your child from developing nutrient deficiencies. Having said that, there are steps that can be taken to lessen common restlessness and fidgety behavior. Foods to avoid include:

  • Sweets and sugary soft drinks (especially those containing Tartrazine and caffeine)
  • Foods with artificial flavors, preservatives and coloring (Tartrazine and MSG)
  • Foods high in refined sugar

Make sure that:

  • Your child has regular meals with plenty of fresh fruit, salads and vegetables
  • Oats are included for breakfast each morning (with a small amount of organic brown sugar instead of white sugar, or fruit is even better!)
  • Good wholesome food and unprocessed cereals such as whole-wheat bread, pasta, brown rice, legumes (dry beans, peas and lentils), low-fat milk and dairy products are readily available
  • You serve large helpings of raw, fresh fruit and vegetables (they contain protective vitamins and minerals).
  • You supply a moderate fat intake (olive oil or nuts are a good source of fats)
  • You include carbohydrates – a good source of energy that helps to increase levels of serotonin, an important brain chemical

Remember that hyperactivity and restlessness may present as ADHD, but this may be a direct result of fluctuations in blood glucose levels! Although sugar has never been directly shown to cause hyperactivity – there can be little doubt for most parents that after a big helping of sweets and candies, children are restless, and more active (think of birthday parties)! A boost of food can mean a boost of energy and lots of fidgeting!

The best way to ensure balanced blood sugar for children is to feed them foods with a low Glycaemic Index (Low GI). This means that nutrients from food that is released into the bloodstream at a slow and steady pace – for balanced blood sugar, and balanced energy throughout the day.

Until now, it was generally regarded as a myth that additives and colorants increased hyper behavior in children – but now experts have proven that there is a link! Research published by the University of Southampton (McCann et al, 2007) has shown that artificial colorants, additives and preservatives have “a significant negative effect on the behavior of 3-year-old and 8-9-year-old children.” So, avoid foods with labels that contain: Colorants such as: Sunset yellow (E110), Quinoline yellow (E104), Carmoisine (E122), Allura red (E129), Tartrazine (E102) and Ponceau (E124) as well as preservatives such as sodium benzoate.

Speak to your dietician or health professional for a possible supplement of vitamins and minerals (calcium, magnesium, potassium, zinc, selenium, B vitamins, beta-carotene, vitamins E and C, and essential fatty acids such as omega-6 and omega-3) for your child’s nervous system.

In conclusion, a healthy eating plan goes hand in hand with moderate exercise. Physical activities can help to use up excess energy your child has and help him or her to relax and unwind. Remember that as a parent you can put all of these tips into action and monitor the results – no one knows your child as well as you!

Men’s Health: Common Issues and Natural Remedies

When it comes to their health, men tend to be more inclined than women to push aside health issues and hope that things will “take care of themselves”. Further, while they may strive to maintain physical health, men may be less likely to manage emotional and mental well-being.

Whether these behaviors are self-induced or subconscious due to societal pressures to be “tough” and “masculine”, health should not be a gender-based issue! Ignoring a nagging health condition or allowing a problem to go undiagnosed can lead to further complications.

Especially for men over 40, regular checkups should be made by an herbalist, homeopathic or general practitioner to evaluate general prostate health, cholesterol and blood pressure levels.

At this time, other health issues can also be mentioned and addressed, such as insomnia, depression, weight gain, etc.

Check out two of the most common internal and external health concerns and tips for natural support below.

Prostate Health

The three main disorders that can affect the prostate gland include: infection, enlarged prostate (Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia), and prostate cancer. All three can directly affect the functionality of the penis and lead to erectile dysfunction and low libido.

Since research suggests that diet and stress appear to be the main culprits of prostate disorders, it is very important to follow a healthy nutrition plan and manage tension. Be sure to include a lot of fresh vegetables and fruits into daily diets, as well as fresh fish. Choose whole grains rather than refined white breads, pasta, crackers, and rice. Avoid fattening meats and packaged, processed foods.

Herbal and homeopathic remedies can greatly support prostate health, especially Saw palmetto (Sabal serrulata), which has been studied for its association with promoting male sexual health, and therefore the health of the prostate gland and normal PSA levels.

Hypoxis rooperi (extract of African potato) is a plant containing nutrient values that are as high as and possibly greater than in modern vegetables. Hypoxis rooperi has been researched for its ability to support the health of the prostate gland and testicles.

Hair Loss

Another health issue most men are concerned about is hair loss. Permanent male-pattern baldness typically begins to affect men as early as their teens and early twenties, with visible hair loss or balding appearing first near the top of the head, with a receding hairline at the temples.

While genetics are responsible for most balding, herbal and homeopathic remedies can help to stimulate and encourage hair growth as well as support blood circulation, hormonal balance and thyroid functioning.

Herbs commonly used include Ginkgo biloba, Rosmarinus officinale and Xanthoxylum clavaherculis help to promote strong, abundant hair. Other powerful herbs such as Equisetum arvense, Avena sativa and Echinacea are effective combating hair loss and nourishing hair follicles.

AHA Issued Their First Ever Statement On Triglyceride Management And Omega-3 EPA/DHA

The American Heart Association (AHA) recently issued its first ever statement on triglyceride management that includes recommendations for Omega-3 EPA/DHA intake. Elevated triglyceride levels have long been associated with cardiovascular disease (CVD). According to the AHA more than 31% of the United States population has borderline high triglyceride levels. Furthermore, AHA’s 2006 statistical data estimates that 81,100,000 people in the United States have one or more forms of cardiovascular disease, claiming 831,272 lives in that same year.

In conjunction with other important lifestyle changes, the AHA recommends 0.5 - 1g of Omega-3 EPA and DHA for individuals with borderline fasting triglyceride levels (150-199mg/dL), 1 - 2g for individuals with high fasting triglyceride levels (200-499mg/dL), and 2 - 4g for individuals with very high fasting triglyceride levels (≥500mg/dL). The AHA has also previously recommended that normal healthy individuals consume a variety of fish (preferably oily), and a daily intake of 1g of Omega-3 EPA and DHA for patients with documented coronary heart disease.

The recent statement issued by AHA is a very positive step for improving consumers’ understanding of the role of triglycerides in CVD management. Although awareness of the health benefits of Omega-3 is very high among consumers, many still do not understand the different forms of Omega-3 (EPA, DHA and ALA), or the health benefits of each.

It is important for consumers to understand that fish provides both EPA and DHA, whereas most algae sources provide only DHA. Furthermore, while ALA is an essential fatty acid, many of the  reported health benefits associated with Omega-3 have been the result of supplementation with EPA and DHA. While the body can theoretically convert ALA into EPA and DHA, the actual conversion rate is very low. In fact, many studies suggest that the conversion rate can be as low as 1% or less. As such, fish, fish oil supplements, and food products fortified with fish oil are the best sources of Omega-3 for consumers.

What Is Stress & How Do You Overcome Feeling Stressed?

Are you stressed out? If you’re like most Americans, chances are the answer is, “Heck, yeah!” Unfortunately, stress is now just a way of life for too many of us. Whether it’s concerns over the uncertain economy, struggling to meet deadlines at work, handling family emergencies, dealing with relationship woes, or even tolerating daily traffic jams, there seems to be an unending parade of stressors in modern life.

Since this is National Stress Awareness Month, now’s a good time to discuss the different aspects of stress, how it can help or hurt you, and the coping mechanisms that can diminish it. If you’re already feeling too stressed to read the rest of this article, you really need to … so take a deep breath and read on.

What is stress?

The term “stress” is used as an umbrella term that covers the range of physiological responses to certain life events, such as an imminent threat, a heated argument, and real or imagined danger. When you react to stress, your body is trying to protect itself in the face of certain challenges. By releasing adrenaline and cortisol hormones, your body readies you for action. Consequently, your blood pressure rises, breathing becomes more rapid and your heart pounds. These physiological changes help to boost your strength, bolster your stamina and hone your focus.

If you’re stressed, you’re not alone

According to a March survey, 77% of Americans suffer from job-related stress. Topping the list of workplace stressors was low pay; however, commuting, unreasonable workloads and layoff fears were not too far behind.

Common negative stressors include the death of a loved one, divorce, injury or illness. Even though most people associate stress with negative situations, stress can also arise in positive scenarios, too. Any highly charged situation, especially one which forces you to quickly react, can cause stress. Positive stressors include marriage, buying a house, having a child and getting a promotion. And, depending on your personality, you may suffer from self-imposed stress, from mental states like pessimism, perfectionism or the inability to accept uncertainty.

Are you a serial stressor?

Although stress helps you meet short-term challenges, chronic stress can leave your body both over stimulated and depleted, risking damage to your health. Long-term stress can suppress the immune system, increase the risk of heart attack or stroke, and can even lead to premature aging, leaving you more vulnerable to emotional problems such as anxiety and depression.

These are serious health concerns so we encourage you to take time to consider how you’ll react in various situations. Often, those who suffer from chronic stress don’t actually recognize when they are stressed. The warning signs include constantly worrying, feeling overwhelmed, sleeping too little and frequent colds. If you believe you might be suffering from chronic stress, the first step is to talk with your doctor. Beyond that, here are some specific ideas about how to reduce the impacts of stress in your life.

Tips for managing stress

To start, coping mechanisms such as smoking, overeating, avoiding social interactions, lashing out at others and abusing drugs are known to be harmful to your health. Fortunately, there are healthier ways to manage stress, including …

Guided Imagery … Think of a peaceful setting. Imagine all the details, including visuals, smells and sounds. Think about how calm you feel. Use this process whenever you are faced with stressful situations.

Talk to a Friend … Expressing your feelings to a trusted friend can lighten your load. Remember, the more you isolate yourself, the more susceptible you will be to stress.

Aromatherapy … Thanks to the nose’s strong ties to the brain, aromatherapy offers a quick and easy way to foster a relaxed state of mind. Lavender, citrus and vanilla are effective scents that can be purchased at health food stores.

Exercise … Walk, swim or take a bike ride. When you exercise at a certain level over a period of time, the body produces chemicals that can make you feel good. And, you’ll probably drop some weight, too.

Omega-3 Fatty Acids … Serotonin, a hormone found naturally in the brain, is responsible for controlling emotional responses and creating a sense of well-being. The EPA and DHA present in Omega-3 fatty acids help maintain healthy levels of serotonin.

Eat a Healthy Diet … Try to avoid fast foods loaded with fat and preservatives, overly salted foods, caffeine and sugar. Make sure your diet includes proteins, whole grains, fresh veggies and plenty of water.

Laugh … Laughing actually induces physical changes in your body. According to the Mayo Clinic, “Laughter enhances your intake of oxygen-rich air, stimulates your heart, lungs and muscles, and increases the endorphins that are released by your brain.”

Meditate … It’s not necessary to take a class or even buy a book. Find a comfortable and quiet spot and think about all of the positive things in your life. Make an effort to feel truly thankful for each of them.

Enjoy Nature … Taking a walk outdoors can do you a world of good. Basking in sunshine not only feels good, it is good for your health, when taken in moderation. Sunshine helps stimulate serotonin, which can promote a good mental outlook.

Help Someone Else … Research reveals that people who engage in altruistic behavior are inclined to enjoy better mental health.

Learn to Say No … You may be surprised to learn that many people find it difficult to say “no”. Reserving this right every once in a while can keep you from filling up every minute of every day.

Indulge in Your Hobbies … When you do something you love to do, you go to a more positive emotional level.

Learn from Others … Do you admire how a friend or co-worker handles stressful situations? If so, observe (or simply ask them) how they do it. You may learn a helpful trick or two.

Do Nothing … Sometimes it’s easy to lose sight of the fact that it’s okay to just do nothing at all for a while. Stop whatever activity is at-hand and savor the moment.

Ask for Help … If you start to feel overwhelmed by chores or tasks, ask for help. It’s as simple as that!

Smile … Try it right now. You may find this minimal act an instant stress reducer.

Groove More … Treat yourself to some excellent tunes, preferably up-tempo.

Do One Thing at a Time … Smart phones and computers are great, but sometimes they can boggle the senses, increasing stress.

Hydrotherapy … Soaking in a hot bath sprinkled with epsom salts can help release muscle tension and get you ready for a good night’s sleep.

Curl up with a Friend … Spending quality time with your companion animal can lower blood pressure and stress levels.

No matter which techniques you choose to incorporate in your routine, we truly hope they’ll help you to live a more abundant life, with less abundant stress!

Fish Oil Part of Regimen to Protect Against Heart Disease

In the first large-scale study of its kind, researchers from the Kobe University Graduate School of Medicine in Japan investigated the health effects of daily Omega-3 supplements in combination with a drug commonly prescribed for those at-risk for heart attacks, angina and other coronary events.

Patients were all identified as having higher than average levels of cholesterol. They were divided into two groups: a main group that included nearly 15,000 participants with no prior history of coronary artery disease, and a secondary group with over 3,600 subjects with a prior history of coronary artery disease. Some of each group were given highly-purified fish oil supplements in addition to statins (enzyme blockers that lower cholesterol levels in the blood by reducing the production of cholesterol by the liver), while others were given only the prescription drug.

Over the course of the nearly five-year study, there was a significant difference between those receiving the fish oil supplements and those who did not. While both therapies proved effective in reducing levels of cholesterol, participants taking the fish oil supplements and statins had a 19% reduction in risk for heart illness. The research also noted that a similar, preventative benefit from daily fish oil supplementation that may convey to those not currently deemed at-risk for heart problems.

How To Protect Yourself From Radiation Exposure

The unfolding events relating to Japan's damaged nuclear reactors is raising a real concern in the U.S. If one or several of these reactors meltdown radioactive particles will following the jet stream and will not only impact Los Angeles to Alaska but effect the entire continent.

Protecting the thyroid with iodine seems to be about all public health officials are willing to recommend to the public. However, there are other even more important steps every person should consider. Radiation interaction within your body generates massive amounts of damaging free radicals, in turn potentially inducing DNA damage that may lead to future cancer -- often manifesting a decade or two later. This means it is a good idea to maximize your overall antioxidant defenses. Ideally, this system of defense should be bolstered in advance to provide maximal protection. Unfortunately the antioxidant defense systems of most Americans are in a poor or weakened state.

Research shows the best ways to protect your body, cells, and DNA from Free-Radical damage is by 1) Raising your body's Master Antioxidant Defense Chemical Glutathione
2) Raising your Body's cellular ATP and 3) Taking a Broad Spectrum of Antioxidant compounds1,2.

Our company is one of the few companies that specializes in cellular or cyto antioxidant defense. The ingredients in Clear DTX, and ATP R3 are known to support your bodies natural production of Glutathione and ATP at the cellular level.*

Omega-3’s Help To Preserve Cognitive Functioning

In a study featured in Neurology, 1,613 subjects were examined between the ages of 45 and 70, testing the correlation between Omega-3 consumption and the preservation of cognitive abilities. Mental functioning was gauged on multiple measures by researchers (memory, psychomotor speed, higher-level information processing and overall cognition), and participants completed a food consumption questionnaire to record their eating patterns, especially as their diets related to intake of fatty fish.

Consumption of long-chain polyunsaturated Omega-3 fatty acids derived from fish was positively associated with a reduced risk of mental impairment, both on measures of overall cognitive function and psychomotor speed. Researchers also noted a significant correlation between higher consumption rates of cholesterol (saturated fats) and an increased risk of impaired memory and cognitive flexibility.

The researchers concluded that Omega-3’s may benefit cognitive performance due to their anti-inflammatory properties. The researchers further speculate that the diminished cognitive performance associated with lower intake of Omega-3’s may be a predictor of Alzheimer’s Disease later in life.

Show Your Heart Some Love with Omega-3

HeartScope February is not just for lovers anymore. The American Heart Association (AHA) has officially dubbed February “American Heart Month”. So, what better time to start showing your heart more love than in February? The Center for Disease Control and Prevention claims that heart disease is the leading cause of deaths in the United States. Both the Mayo Clinic and the AHA suggest that consuming 2-3 (3.5 ounce) servings of omega-3 rich foods a week can help support a healthy heart.

How do you know that you are providing your body with enough omega-3’s? Here are a few ways to ensure that you are consuming the recommended amounts of omega-3 fatty acids:

Eat Fish - All fish contain omega-3’s. The fattier the fish, the higher the omega-3 levels. Your best bets are fish with high levels of omega-3’s, such as mackerel, salmon, sardines, herring and tuna. Be sure to use caution when consuming large amounts of fish, as some have elevated levels of mercury, which could lead to health risks, especially in pregnant women. In order to make your fish selection an easy one, the EPA has published safe eating guidelines. For more information, visit www.EPA.gov and type ‘safe eating guideline’ in the search box at the top of the home page.

Go Nuts - Most nuts, seeds and beans also contain omega-3’s. The best sources are soybeans, walnuts, flaxseed and pumpkin seeds.

Cook with Oil - Instead of cooking in vegetable oil, try a more heart-healthy option by using olive oil, sunflower seed oil, soybean oil, flaxseed oil or canola oil.

Get Fortified - When you are shopping at the local market, keep your eyes open for foods fortified with omega-3. Most will prominently display “Enhanced or Fortified with Omega-3” on the label. Juices, eggs, pastas, cereals, breads and even soups are just some of the products that now feature heart healthy omega-3’s.

How can you truly be certain that you are getting plenty of omega-3’s? Taking an omega-3 fish oil supplement daily is a great way; however, be sure to choose an ultra-refined product. To be sure you are getting the highest quality, choose a fish oil supplement that has an IFOS 5-Star Rating. This validation testing ensures that you are getting a safe and effective fish oil supplement that you can feel confident giving to your family.

Do you lead a heart-healthy lifestyle? Finding out is easy! The AHA has developed an interactive online action plan for you to determine if you are leading a healthy life. It is called “Life’s Simple 7”. Take the test and discover the state of your heart. The program will provide you with simple steps to achieve a healthier heart and lifestyle. So, show your heart some love and visit www.MyLifeCheck.org and take the challenge today.

Dyslexia, Diet and Omega 3 Fish Oils

Dyslexia appears to be a close cousin of attention deficient disorder and affects about 5 percent of Americans. Dyslexics often see letters backwards or turned sideways and have a tough time reading printed text. Just like those with ADD, people with dyslexia have a deficiency of long-chain Omega 3 fatty acids in their blood lipids. Supplementation with long-chain Omega 3 fatty acids should, therefore, reduce this problem. This thinking makes perfect sense because the retina in each of your eyes (which is responsible for the quality of the visual input to the brain) has the highest concentration of DHA in the body. Like the children with ADD, those with dyslexia will require the combination of high-dose fish oil and insulin control. Like the children with ADD, children with dyslexia initially require between 9 and 18 grams per day of ultra- refined long-chain Omega 3 fatty acids to see an improvement in their condition.

Does Your Living Situation Whittle or Widen Your Waistline?

by A. Grano

An article recently came out by Judith J. Wurtman, PhD, who made a statement that living alone may actually be detrimental to weight loss efforts, despite the popular notion that single dwellers would have an easier time controlling their diets.

Pitfalls of Solo Eating

The reasons why? The article suggested that people who live alone may be more likely to fall under one of three types: ‘emotional eaters’, who eat due to loneliness; ‘boredom eaters’, who nosh quickly through meals then snack throughout the evening because they do not have the drawn-out process of meal preparation and cleanup; or ‘mindless eaters’, who are unaware of the calories they are consuming while eating ready-made foods in front of the TV.

Pitfalls of Group Eating

Conversely, people who are trying to watch their waistlines and live in a larger household may have to contend with the temptation of junk food lying around for those who have faster metabolisms and can eat more calories without weight gain, those who insist on preparing only certain types of foods without consideration of the person watching his or her weight, or those who persuade others to eat something too as part of a mealtime bonding ritual or hobby. Maintaining regular mealtimes is yet another challenge because of how difficult it can be to coordinate different schedules.

Solutions for Every Situation

Living alone or living with others each presents its own challenges, but staying motivated to eat well is achievable regardless. Planning menus and sticking to them is important for anyone, as it eliminates added calories for those mindless snackers, and can help others in the household to understand that healthy meals are important to you. If getting others to cooperate on your meal suggestions is a struggle, try to work together to find a happy medium. Having support from your family, partner, or friends is important and a little communication can go a long way.

Scientists Learn How Food Affects The Brain: Omega 3 Especially Important

Article From ScienceDaily (July 11, 2008) — In addition to helping protect us from heart disease and cancer, a balanced diet and regular exercise can also protect the brain and ward off mental disorders.

"Food is like a pharmaceutical compound that affects the brain," said Fernando Gómez-Pinilla, a UCLA professor of neurosurgery and physiological science who has spent years studying the effects of food, exercise and sleep on the brain. "Diet, exercise and sleep have the potential to alter our brain health and mental function. This raises the exciting possibility that changes in diet are a viable strategy for enhancing cognitive abilities, protecting the brain from damage and counteracting the effects of aging."

Gómez-Pinilla analyzed more than 160 studies about food's affect on the brain; the results of his analysis appear in the journal Nature Reviews Neuroscience.

Omega-3 fatty acids -- found in salmon, walnuts and kiwi fruit -- provide many benefits, including improving learning and memory and helping to fight against such mental disorders as depression and mood disorders, schizophrenia, and dementia, said Gómez-Pinilla, a member of UCLA's Brain Research Institute and Brain Injury Research Center.

Synapses in the brain connect neurons and provide critical functions; much learning and memory occurs at the synapses, Gómez-Pinilla said.

"Omega-3 fatty acids support synaptic plasticity and seem to positively affect the expression of several molecules related to learning and memory that are found on synapses," Gómez-Pinilla said. "Omega-3 fatty acids are essential for normal brain function.

"Dietary deficiency of omega-3 fatty acids in humans has been associated with increased risk of several mental disorders, including attention-deficit disorder, dyslexia, dementia, depression, bipolar disorder and schizophrenia," he said. "A deficiency of omega-3 fatty acids in rodents results in impaired learning and memory."

Children who had increased amounts of omega-3 fatty acids performed better in school, in reading and in spelling and had fewer behavioral problems, he said.

Preliminary results from a study in England show that school performance improved among a group of students receiving omega-3 fatty acids. In an Australian study, 396 children between the ages 6 and 12 who were given a drink with omega-3 fatty acids and other nutrients (iron, zinc, folic acid and vitamins A, B6, B12 and C) showed higher scores on tests measuring verbal intelligence and learning and memory after six months and one year than a control group of students who did not receive the nutritional drink. This study was also conducted with 394 children in Indonesia. The results showed higher test scores for boys and girls in Australia, but only for girls in Indonesia.

Getting omega-3 fatty acids from food rather than from capsule supplements can be more beneficial, providing additional nutrients, Gómez-Pinilla said.

Scientists are learning which omega-3 fatty acids seem to be especially important. One is docosahexaenoic acid, or DHA, which is abundant in salmon. DHA, which reduces oxidative stress and enhances synaptic plasticity and learning and memory, is the most abundant omega-3 fatty acid in cell membranes in the brain.

"The brain and the body are deficient in the machinery to make DHA; it has to come through our diet," said Gómez-Pinilla, who was born and raised in salmon-rich Chile and eats salmon three times a week, along with a balanced diet. "Omega-3 fatty acids are essential."

A healthy diet and exercise can also reduce the effect of brain injury and lead to a better recovery, he said.

Recent research also supports the hypothesis that health can be passed down through generations, and a number of innovative studies point to the possibility that the effects of diet on mental health can be transmitted across generations, Gómez-Pinilla said.

A long-term study that included more than 100 years of birth, death, health and genealogical records for 300 Swedish families in an isolated village showed that an individual's risk for diabetes and early death increased if his or her paternal grandparents grew up in times of food abundance rather than food shortage.

"Evidence indicates that what you eat can affect your grandchildren's brain molecules and synapses," Gómez-Pinilla said. "We are trying to find the molecular basis to explain this."

Controlled meal-skipping or intermittent caloric restriction might provide health benefits, he said.

Excess calories can reduce the flexibility of synapses and increase the vulnerability of cells to damage by causing the formation of free radicals. Moderate caloric restriction could protect the brain by reducing oxidative damage to cellular proteins, lipids and nucleic acids, Gómez-Pinilla said.

The brain is highly susceptible to oxidative damage. Blueberries have been shown to have a strong antioxidant capacity, he noted.

In contrast to the healthy effects of diets that are rich in omega-3 fatty acids, diets high in trans fats and saturated fats adversely affect cognition, studies indicate.

Junk food and fast food negatively affect the brain's synapses, said Gómez-Pinilla, who eats fast food less often since conducting this research. Brain synapses and several molecules related to learning and memory are adversely affected by unhealthy diets, he said.

Emerging research indicates that the effects of diet on the brain, combined with the effects of exercise and a good night's sleep, can strengthen synapses and provide other cognitive benefits, he added.

In Okinawa, an island in Japan where people frequently eat fish and exercise, the lifespan is one of the world's longest, and the population has a very low rate of mental disorders, Gómez-Pinilla noted.

Folic acid is found in various foods, including spinach, orange juice and yeast. Adequate levels of folic acid are essential for brain function, and folate deficiency can lead to neurological disorders such as depression and cognitive impairment. Folate supplementation, either by itself or in conjunction with other B vitamins, has been shown to be effective in preventing cognitive decline and dementia during aging and enhancing the effects of antidepressants. The results of a recent randomized clinical trial indicate that a three-year folic acid supplementation can help reduce the age-related decline in cognitive function.

In patients with major depression and schizophrenia, levels of a signaling molecule known as brain-derived neurotrophic factor, or BDNF, are reduced. Antidepressants elevate BDNF levels, and most treatments for depression and schizophrenia stimulate BDNF. Here, too, omega-3 fatty acids are beneficial, as is the curry spice curcumin, which has been shown to reduce memory deficits in animal models of Alzheimer's disease and brain trauma. BDNF is most abundant in the hippocampus and the hypothalamus -- brain areas associated with cognitive and metabolic regulation.

The high consumption of curcumin in India may contribute to the low prevalence of Alzheimer's disease on the subcontinent.

In humans, a mutation in a BDNF receptor has been linked to obesity and impairments in learning and memory.

"BDNF is reduced in the hippocampus, in various cortical areas and in the serum of patients with schizophrenia," Gómez-Pinilla said. "BDNF levels are reduced in the plasma of patients with major depression."

Smaller food portions with the appropriate nutrients seem to be beneficial for the brain's molecules, such as BDNF, he said.

Gómez-Pinilla showed in 1995 that exercise can have an effect on the brain by elevating levels of BDNF.

He noted that while some people have extremely good genes, most of us are not so lucky and need a balanced diet, regular exercise and a good night's sleep.

The research was funded by the National Institutes of Health's National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke.

Dangers of Chantix Revealed - When Quitting Smoking Becomes Deadly

Many smokers seeking a cessation solution probably thought they had found a safe, fool-proof method with Pfizer’s introduction of Chantix, which targets the nicotine receptors in the brain. However, reported dangerous side effects of Chantix have recently surfaced, causing so much controversy that the FAA banned pilots and air traffic controllers from taking it after concluding a series of investigative reports.

Chantix warnings include the possibility of experiencing suicidal thoughts and behaviors, seizures, loss of consciousness, hallucinations, as well as vivid nightmares and sleepwalking episodes. Others reported becoming addicted to Chantix.

Chantix problems don’t end there. As of today, and with 988 reports, Chantix is ranked first among all drugs in reported problems. Once hailed as the most innovative drug to help smoker’s overcome nicotine addiction, Pfizer’s new wonder drug was ten years in the making and after the FDA approved it as a smoke cessation aid, Chantix entered the pharmaceutical market at full force and received rave reviews in the process for its ability to take away the drug-induced pleasure of smoking cigarettes.

Meanwhile, given the new reports of dangerous side effects of Chantix, what is a smoker looking to quit to do? The damages and effects of smoking cigarettes have long been known, and more people now than ever have made the choice of giving up smoking– but it’s definitely not easy. Some doctors agree that nicotine addiction can be even harder to let go of then alcohol and illegal substances, and according to Pfizer’s web site, “Smoking cessation, with or without treatment, is associated with nicotine withdrawal symptoms."

Nicotine addiction is actually more than a habit, according to Dr. Neal L. Benowitz of the University of California, “Tobacco addiction is best considered a chronic disease, with most smokers requiring repeated interventions over time before achieving permanent abstinence”.

So if withdrawal symptoms cannot be avoided, why add the possibility of experiencing potentially deadly side effects to the recipe? Natural remedies can be used to aid the difficult process of quitting smoking– while avoiding unnecessary side effects.

Pleasant smoking effects such as reduced tension and stress can be counterbalanced with certain herbs by supporting the nervous system and helping to maintain balanced serotonin levels in the brain. Natural remedies can also address the irritability and restlessness associated with withdrawal. In order to successfully stick to a cessation program, it is essential to support these bodily systems.

Herbs to help quit smoking also generally aid the body’s detoxification process. Detoxifying the body with a wholesome diet, regular exercise, and the help of natural remedies will also help in dutifully following a plan of improving health.

What Are Omega 3 Fatty Acids & What Makes SeaLogix Fish Oil Better Than Other Fish Oils?

Sealogix fish oil What are Omega-3 fatty acids?
Omega-3’s belong to a group of fatty acids known as long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids. Because the body does not manufacture them, Omega-3's are classified as "essential fatty acids" (EFA’s), as it is essential they be obtained from food. There are three important Omega-3 fatty acids: alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA). EPA and DHA are found in fish, while ALA is found only in plant foods such as flaxseed meal. The body can convert ALA into small amounts of EPA and DHA, but recent studies have indicated that our bodies are somewhat inefficient in this conversion. Therefore, it is necessary to supplement your diet with these nutrients in order to significantly change your levels of Omega-3’s.

What is sesamin?
Naturally found in sesame seeds as lignans, sesamin comes from the 1% solid portion of the kernel’s oil. Sesame and sesame lignans are associated with health benefits in humans.

How much sesamin is in each serving of Life's Abundance Sealogix (120 capsules)?
Four capsules contains 68 mg of sesame extract, which is 60% sesamin. Therefore, four capsules contains 40.8 mg of sesamin.

What do Omega-3 fatty acids do for the body?
The Omega-3’s EPA and DHA are recognized for their health benefits in all life stages. They are important building blocks for every cell in your body, which requires these crucial components to grow, develop and maintain health.* These fatty acids are an integral part of cell membranes and are precursors of several important cellular messengers.* Studies have demonstrated that EPA is important for optimal brain function and contributes to the reduction of cellular inflammation.* DHA has been recognized for brain, visual and nervous system health and development.* Additionally, these essential fatty acids work together to contribute to good heart health.*

What is the richest source of Omega-3 fatty acids?
Fish oil is the richest source for eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA). Cold-water fish, like anchovies, salmon and sardines, are considered the best source for these essential fatty acids. It is important to remember, that all omega-3's are not created equal. You would need almost four tablespoons of flaxseed oil to get the same amount of EPA and DHA found in one teaspoon of Sealogix! That's approximately ten times as much flaxseed oil than fish oil.

Why should I take a fish oil supplement?
Changes in food preferences and the impact of modern food processing in Western society have led to a significant decrease in average dietary intake of Omega-3 fatty acids. As a result, most American diets contain far more Omega-6’s than Omega-3’s. In fact, it is estimated that the average American has between twenty to fifty times the amount of Omega-6’s as they do Omega-3’s. Recent studies have indicated that this kind of imbalance can set the stage for a host of health problems. To promote a healthier fatty acid ratio, it is advisable to avoid Omega-6’s (which are commonly found in fried foods, commercial baked goods and some margarines), and eat more baked or broiled seafood and supplement the diet with a high-quality fish oil like Life's Abundance Sealogix Fish Oil.

What are the health benefits associated with taking Omega-3 EFA’s from fish oil?
Scientific evidence has indicated that a diet rich in Omega-3 essential fatty acids helps support:
  • A Healthy Brain
  • A Healthy Heart
  • A Healthy immune system
  • Healthy joint movement
  • Healthy kidneys
  • A balanced mood and sense of wellbeing
  • Strength and stamina
  • And helps maintain cholesterol levels that are already within the normal range*

We invite you to review our extensive research section, which provides summaries of recent scientific inquiries into the health benefits of omega-3 fatty acids from fish oil.

Why does purity matter with regard to fish oil?
Unfortunately, pollution has affected the water quality of all of our oceans. The contaminants in our waters include toxins like mercury, PCB’s, arsenic, lead and cadmium. Consequently, many fish now contain these undesirable elements. That is why it is very important to choose a fish oil that is molecularly distilled. Molecular distillation is a process that concentrates and purifies the fish oil. It is also important to select a fish oil product that is tested for concentration, toxicity and safety by an independent third party. Supplementing your diet with a pharmaceutical-grade fish oil like Sealogix allows you to safely get the additional Omega-3 fatty acids you need.

Study Abstract

Department of Pathology, Louisiana State University, Health Sciences Center, New Orleans, LA, USA.

Diet has profound effects on the development of atherosclerosis. Fatty acid composition, antioxidants, and other components such as lignans have major effects on the atherosclerotic process. Sesame oil has both mono- and polyunsaturated fatty acid constituents in equal proportions. In addition, it also has high levels of numerous antioxidants and inducers of peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor. The objective of this study was to determine the anti-atherosclerotic effects of sesame oil. In this study, male low-density lipoprotein (LDL) receptor (LDLR) -/- mice were fed atherogenic diet or atherogenic diet reformulated with the same level of sesame oil (sesame oil diet). Plasma lipids and atherosclerotic lesions were quantified after 3 months of feeding. Sesame oil-containing diet significantly reduced the atherosclerotic lesion formation and plasma cholesterol, triglyceride, and LDL cholesterol levels in LDLR -/- mice. These findings suggest that sesame oil could inhibit atherosclerosis lesion formation effectively, perhaps because of the synergistic actions of fatty acid and nonsaponifiable components.

Chen PR, Chien KL, Su TC. Dietary sesame reduces serum cholesterol and enhances antioxidant capacity in hypercholesterolemia. Nutr Res. 2005;25(6): 559-67.

Study Abstract

The purpose of the study was to investigate the effects of sesame on lowering serum lipids and enhancing antioxidant capacity in 21 hyperlipidemic patients. Subjects were instructed to consume their regular diet for 2 weeks before starting the experimental diet. The experimental diet with 40 g roasted sesame was consumed for 4 weeks and the regular diet followed for another 4 weeks. Body weights and fasting blood were determined at weeks 0, 4, and 8. The results showed that the diet with sesame significantly decreased the levels of serum total cholesterol and low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol. The time for erythrocyte hemolysis and the lag phase of LDL oxidation were significantly increased by sesame ingestion. A diet containing sesame slightly reduced the levels of thiobarbituric acid–reactive substances in LDL. The beneficial effects of sesame disappeared when patients returned to their regular diets. Sesame in this study appeared to exert beneficial effects on serum lipids and to improve antioxidant capacity in hypercholesterolemic patients.

Hirose N, Inoue T, Nishihara K, et al. Inhibition of cholesterol absorption and synthesis in rats by sesamin. J Lipid Res. 1991 May;32(4):629-38.

Study Abstract

Laboratory of Nutrition Chemistry, Kyushu University School of Agriculture, Fukuoka, Japan.
The effects of sesamin, a lignan from sesame oil, on various aspects of cholesterol metabolism were examined in rats maintained on various dietary regimens. When given at a dietary level of 0.5% for 4 weeks, sesamin reduced the concentration of serum and liver cholesterol significantly irrespective of the presence or absence of cholesterol in the diet, except for one experiment in which the purified diet free of cholesterol was given. On feeding sesamin, there was a decrease in lymphatic absorption of cholesterol accompanying an increase in fecal excretion of neutral, but not acidic, steroids, particularly when the cholesterol-enriched diet was given. Sesamin inhibited micellar solubility of cholesterol, but not bile acids, whereas it neither bound taurocholate nor affected the absorption of fatty acids. Only a marginal proportion (ca. 0.15%) of sesamin administered intragastrically was recovered in the lymph. There was a significant reduction in the activity of liver microsomal 3-hydroxy-3-methylglutaryl coenzyme A reductase after feeding sesamin, although the activity of hepatic cholesterol 7 alpha-hydroxylase, drug metabolizing enzymes, and alcohol dehydrogenase remained uninfluenced. Although the weight and phospholipid concentration of the liver increased unequivocally on feeding sesamin, the histological examination by microscopy showed no abnormality, and the activity of serum GOT and GPT remained unchanged. Since sesamin lowered both serum and liver cholesterol levels by inhibiting absorption and synthesis of cholesterol simultaneously, it deserves further study as a possible hypocholesterolemic agent of natural origin.

Ikeda S, Kagaya M, Kobayashi K, et al. Dietary sesame lignans decrease lipid peroxidation in rats fed docosahexaenoic acid. J Nut Sci Vitaminol (Tokyo). 2003 Sep;49(4):270-6.

Study Abstract

Department of Food and Nutrition, Sugiyama Jogakuen University, Nagoya 464-8662, Japan.

We have previously reported that dietary sesamin and sesaminol, major lignans of sesame seed, elevate the alpha-tocopherol concentration and decrease the thiobarbituric acid reactive substance (TBARS) concentration in the plasma and liver of rats. In this study, the effects of dietary sesamin and sesaminol on the lipid peroxidation in the plasma and tissues of rats fed docosahexaenoic acid (DHA, 22:6 n-3) were examined. Male Wistar rats (4-wk-old) were divided into the following six experimental groups: control group, fed a basal diet: sesamin group, fed a diet with sesamin (2 g/kg); sesaminol group, fed a diet with sesaminol (2 g/kg); DHA group, fed a diet containing DHA (5 g/kg); DHA + sesamin group, fed a diet containing DHA with sesamin; and DHA + sesaminol group, fed a diet containing DHA with sesaminol. Each diet contained either 0.01 or 0.05 g D-alpha-tocopherol/kg, and the rats were fed the respective experimental diet for 5 wk. The dietary DHA elevated the TBARS concentration and also increased the red blood-cell hemolysis induced by the dialuric acid. The dietary sesamin and sesaminol lowered the TBARS concentrations and decreased the red blood hemolysis. The dietary sesamin and sesaminol elevated the alpha-tocopherol concentrations in the plasma, liver, and brain of the rats fed a diet with or without DHA. These results suggest that dietary sesame lignans decrease lipid peroxidation as a result of elevating the alpha-tocopherol concentration in rats fed DHA.

Study Abstract

Laboratory of Food and Biodynamics, Nagoya University Graduate School of Bioagricultural Sciences, Nagoya 464-8601, Japan.

Plant glucosides possess antioxidative properties due to their ability to scavenge free radicals. Sesame seeds contain a class of these compounds, the sesaminol glucosides. To evaluate their antioxidative activity in vivo, we fed rabbits diets containing 1% cholesterol (Chol) with or without 10% defatted sesame flour (DSF) (containing 1% sesaminol glucosides) for 90 d. We determined the susceptibility of their tissues to oxidation ex vivo as well as serum total cholesterol (TC), phospholipid (PL), triglyceride (TG) and HDL cholesterol (HDL-C) concentrations. Serum TC, HDL-C, PL and TG levels were unaffected by the addition of DSF. The HDL-C in the Chol + DSF group was greater than in the Chol group at 45 d. Both were greater than in the groups that did not consume cholesterol. Liver TC and TG were significantly lower in rabbits fed the diet containing DSF plus 1% cholesterol than in those fed 1% cholesterol alone. Lipid peroxidation activity, measured as 2-thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS), was lower in the liver (P < 0.05) and serum (P = 0.06) of rabbits fed DSF plus cholesterol than in rabbits fed the cholesterol diet. Although we did not detect sesaminol glucosides in peripheral tissues, we observed abundant quantities of sesaminol in rabbits fed DSF, the principal metabolite. Our findings suggest that feeding DSF to rabbits does not protect cholesterol-induced hypercholesterolemia, but may decrease susceptibility to oxidative stress in rabbits fed cholesterol, perhaps due to the antioxidative activity of sesaminol.

Compare Life's Abundance SeaLogix Fish Oil To Your Current Fish Oil Brand - Does It Stack Up?

Thanks in large part to the superior quality, purity and concentration of nutrients, Sealogix represents an exceptional value compared to other market brands. To demonstrate the overall value of our formula, we have provided the following comparison chart, which matches Sealogix against competing brands. To create a meaningful, apples-to-apples comparison, we calculated our chart based upon the two most prevalent nutrients in omega-3’s – the long-chain fatty acids EPA and DHA. The prices listed in the chart below demonstrate the costs associated with 1,000 mg of omega-3's (DHA/EPA).* You will note that the Sealogix Pharmaceutical Grade Fish Oil supplements beat the competition by a wide margin: the Sealogix 8-ounce liquid costs $0.45 per 1,000 mg, the Sealogix with Sesamin 120 capsules cost $0.51 per 1,000 and the Sealogix with Sesamin 240 capsules cost $0.54 per 1,000.

While price may be your primary source for comparison, it shouldn’t be the only measure. When it comes to providing the very best for you and your family, it is vital to take into account the purity and safety of a given fish oil supplement. That’s why Sealogix is subjected to stringent scientific testing, the results of which are posted online for your review. All of our Sealogix formulas are tested by IFOS, the International Fish Oil Standards organization, widely recognized as the world’s premier fish oil testing agency. As noted in the comparison chart, all Sealogix supplements have achieved IFOS’s highest possible rating – 5 Stars.

* Although there is no established RDA for Omega-3 Fatty Acids (EPA and DHA), much of the medical research on the health benefits of these nutrients is conducted using amounts of 1,000 mg and up.

The information for this comparison was acquired from reputable Internet web sites during March and April of 2009. This comparison chart focuses on the cost of 1,000 mg of Omega-3's (EPA and DHA) only. Although some of the products used in this comparison contain additional ingredients that may be beneficial to your health, only the cost of the long-chain Omega-3's (EPA and DHA) were calculated. The Sealogix brands used in the above comparison are Sealogix Omega-3 Pharmaceutical Grade Fish Oil Supplement (8-ounce Liquid) and Sealogix Omega-3 Pharmaceutical Grade Fish Oil Supplement with Sesamin (120 and 240 capsules) and the costs per bottle are Autoship prices.

The Health Benefits of Medicinal Mushrooms

There are a variety of medicinal mushrooms that can be taken to improve health. Used for thousands of years in Traditional Chinese Medicine, medicinal mushrooms contain powerful benefits that can help boost the immune system and offer the body a natural way to defend itself against its daily encounters with environmental toxins.

The popularity of medicinal mushrooms in the West has been increasing rapidly in recent years, much in part to the growing need for natural and alternative health remedies.

There is even a host of scientific research studies that have discovered just how powerful these fungi can be. Studies have shown that medicinal mushrooms contain strong immune boosting properties that may offer help to individuals with cancer, asthma and other chronic illnesses.

Here is a list of the key benefits associated with medicinal mushrooms:

  • Restores a weakened immune system

  • Improves cardiovascular health and functioning

  • Reduces inflammation

  • Improves the functioning of the liver

  • Prevents the growth of tumor cells

  • Enhances cognition and neurological functioning

  • Promotes blood sugar balance

Some of the most popular medicinal mushrooms routinely used by herbalists and Traditional Chinese Medicine practitioners are Shiitake, Reishi, Maitake, Cordyceps, Agaricus, Coriolus, and Hericium.

Mushrooms live on the bottom of the ecological ladder. Because of their low totem pole status, they have developed a strong immune system response to help protect them against potentially harmful invaders. Mushrooms’ ability to fight off potential infections is similar to the way that humans’ immune systems have developed over time to protect against viruses, bacteria and pathogens.

When mushrooms are confronted with an invader, they release special polysaccharides, which are long sugar chains, to render the invader ineffective. In essence, they deactivate the power of the invader to inflict any harm. Given this powerful immune response, mushrooms are believed to offer the human immune system enormous health benefits.

But these polysaccharides must be pulled out of the mushroom’s cell walls so that they can be used in an effective supplement form.

The benchmark process for creating effective medicinal mushroom products uses heat and water in a manner that is similar to making, not steeping, tea. Referred to as hot-water extraction, it is the only clinically-proven method for pulling out these polysaccharides from the fungi cell walls, therefore making them available for absorption and assimilation.

But unfortunately, most mushroom supplements, even those prescribed by health practitioners or found in health food stores, use an alcohol extraction process or rely on un-extracted mushrooms. Such methods have not been confirmed via scientific studies to carry the same effective benefits as those processed through hot-water extraction.

It is therefore very important to check with the manufacturer to confirm that extraction techniques use the hot-water extraction method before purchasing the supplement

Are All Omega-3s Created Equal?

There seems to be a lot of confusion out there as to the best sources of omega-3 fatty acids. This article will break down the major sources of omega-3’s and give you the information you need to make educated choices.

First, there are three main types of omega-3 fatty acids: DHA, EPA and ALA. DHA (docosahexaenoic acid) and EPA (Eicosapentaenoic acid) are found in fish and ALA (alpha-linolenic acid ) is found in plants like flaxseed. When you choose an omega-3 source, we suggest that you select a healthy balance of all fatty acids, but make sure you are getting enough EPA and DHA, as these fatty acids are responsible for the majority of the health benefits of omega-3’s.

This is important to remember: if a food or supplement states it is high in omega-3, it does not necessarily mean it is high in EPA and DHA. For example, although flaxseed oil is six times richer than most fish oils in omega-3’s, flaxseed oil contains mainly ALA, not DHA and EPA. Unfortunately, our bodies can only convert ALA into DHA and EPA in very small amounts. Scientific studies have revealed that fatty acids from fish or fish oil, but not flaxseed oil, benefited patients with cardiovascular disease and ADHD.

The best sources of EPA and DHA are fatty fish and fish oil. Cold water fish (like salmon, herring and sardines) are high in omega-3 and serve as good sources of proteins. Unfortunately, our waterways and oceans are polluted and the fish that live in them are increasingly contaminated with methyl mercury, PCBs, arsenic, DDT and other heavy metals. If you choose to get omega-3’s from eating fish, then do your homework. Be sure that you’re buying from a sustainable, deep-water fishery. Check the Environmental Defense Fund’s web site for current ocean fish recommendations and the Environmental Protection Agency’s web site for information on fresh water fish.

Fish oil supplements are also very good sources of EPA and DHA. They are easy to take, pack a powerful punch of omega 3’s and they are highly effective. Although there are very good products available, the drawback is figuring out which fish oil supplement to choose for your family. Because the majority of fish in our oceans are contaminated, it stands to reason that oil from the fish are subject to the same contaminants. The good news is that high-quality fish oil is processed several times to concentrate and purify the oil so that it is safe and effective. So if you are looking for a fish oil supplement, ask if the oil is tested for quality, purity and concentration by an independent third party, such as the IFOS (International Fish Oil Standards). And don't hesitate to ask if the results of those tests are published for everyone to see.

Are there different types of EFA’s And What are the differences?

If you’re like most people, you are probably wondering, “What are essential fatty acids?” Or, “How could something with the word ‘fat’ in it be good for me?” The short answer is essential fatty acids (or EFA’s) are essential because our bodies alone cannot produce them – they must be obtained through our diet. EFA’s are long molecules that are used in the construction of the walls of our cells, known as the cell membranes. The cell membranes are critical for both nutritional processes and the excretion of toxic waste products. Without EFA’s, the body cannot make or repair cell membranes correctly. EFA’s also regulate bodily functions such as blood pressure, clotting, fertility, heart rate and immunity. For these reasons, they are often referred to as “good fats”.

Now that you know a little more about essential fatty acids, you may wonder, “Are there different types of EFA’s?” And if so, “What are the differences?”

There are two main classes of EFA’s in our diet – omega-3 and omega-6. The diet of our ancestors was very different from the diet we eat today. It was much lower in calories, higher in fiber, and richer in fruits, vegetables, lean meat and fish. It was also lower in overall total fat and contained equal amounts of omega-6 and omega-3 fatty acids. Today, however, the typical Western diet contains 10 to 25 times more omega-6 than omega-3, making the typical Western diet appallingly deficient in omega-3’s.

This is important because EFA’s are not all created equal: omega-3 and omega-6 have very different and opposing functions. Omega-3’s are necessary for proper cell membrane construction and keep the membrane flexible and supple. This is particularly important in red blood cells. In 2004, the FDA stated that consumption of omega-3’s may reduce the risk of coronary heart disease, and they have been shown to reduce blood pressure and blood triglyceride levels. Omega-3’s have been studied for their beneficial role in brain and mood disorders, such as Parkinson’s and ADHA. Omega-6’s also have some benefits, such as supporting healthy skin and kidneys, but not nearly that of omega-3’s. Furthermore, too much omega-6 and not enough omega-3 has been shown to cause serious health problems, such as heart attack, arthritis, inflammation, mood disorders, obesity and cancer. Not only that, excessive omega-6 will compete with omega-3, thus increasing the deficiency of omega-3. Researchers now know that a proper balance of omega-6 and omega-3 EFA’s is critically important in development, decreasing chronic disease and improving mental function.

You can increase your omega-3 consumption by eating more cold water fish or taking a fish oil supplement. Omega-6 fatty acids can be found in walnuts, flaxseed and canola oil.

How Time Outside Can Help Ease ADD/ADHD

Modern living has created a new paradox- as we gain more virtual connectivity, we're significantly losing real-time connections.

A national study from the Kaiser Family Foundation cited that the average American 8 to 18-year-old spends seven and a half hours a day using a smart phone, computer, television, or other electronic gadget.

Too Much Technology?

It doesn't seem surprising that reports of ADD/ADHD are continually on the rise, with children spending less time than ever getting physical exercise, a means of naturally expending energy.

Almost half of elementary schools have reportedly cut recess from the curriculum, resulting in kids bottling up excess energy at home and school- often leading to undue methods of treatment.

For children suffering from ADD/ADHD, excess energy usually results in an aggravation of symptoms and therefore more difficulty in both academic and personal life.

For safe, natural support for concentration, attention, and normal energy levels in children and adults, visit Focus Formula

In addition, constant connectivity can disrupt healthy sleep patterns, which can lead to fatigue, difficulty concentrating, and irritability, among other problems. Over time, the effects of lost sleep can lead to anxiety and depression, which can make simple problem solving a challenge and exaggerate daily stressors.

To promote healthy sleep patterns for children and babies, try Serenite Jr.

Green Activity Spotlight: Gardening

Adults and children alike can benefit from ' playing in the dirt'!

Besides contributing to regular physical activity, gardening:

  • Builds responsibility from maintaining routine care
  • Provides outlet for stress
  • Promotes patience, as results are not immediate
  • Creates feelings of accomplishment and pride
  • Allows for bonding time if enjoyed with company

With the start of spring and warmer weather, it's easy to enjoy being active and outdoors, which can provide positive psychological and physiological effects for all ages- and doesn't require much time!

Just half an hour of activity for ADD/ADHD children has been shown to provide:

  • Better academic performance
  • Increased ability to focus and stay on task
  • Improved overall behavior
  • Less fidgeting

Further, a study by the Human-Environment Research Laboratory at the University of Illinois found natural surroundings particularly beneficial in improving concentration and overall functioning in ADD/ADHD children.

In addition, playing with peers, participating in sports, or partaking in other outdoor activities helps build social skills, ease stress, and foster creativity – all positive effects, easily attained naturally!

A Holistic Approach

It's important to help your child find a reasonable balance between work and play, in addition to real time interaction with peers and nature. Taking a holistic approach to systemic health by exercising regularly, eating healthy meals, and getting sufficient sleep will also maintain brain health and vitality, allowing it to function at peak performance for efficient concentration, focus and memory.

Add some time outdoors into the mix, and you may be amazed at the results!

5 Foods To Add To Your Diet This Allergy Season

Allergies seem more prevalent then ever, and you can thank pollution for exacerbating certain allergy symptoms even more. Add to that the side effects of most allergy medicines such as drowsiness, and spring can quickly turn sour for many allergy sufferers.

The good news is that there are certain things you can do to naturally help ease and even prevent troubling symptoms such as wheezing and other respiratory difficulties.

The importance of diet

Maybe you are aware of some of the foods such as dairy that can increase histamine levels in the body (and thus worsen allergy symptoms), but new research digs deeper into the connection between allergies and food and uncovers some you may not be familiar with!

A ground-breaking study on the island of Crete, where the population rarely experiences nasal allergies and wheezing, has shown that diet plays a huge role in the development and prevention of certain allergies.
The study singled out the protective properties of these 5 common foods

Nuts

Nuts are a great source of magnesium and vitamin E. Studies have show that magnesium helps increase lung function while also protecting against wheezing in patients suffering from asthma. Reducing wheezing is helpful not only to bring comfort to allergy sufferers, but also because it prevents lung inflammation associated with wheezing.

Vitamin E helps because it’s an immune system booster and has been shown in numerous studies to reduce the risk of upper respiratory infections, especially the common cold. Vitamin E also protects the body from free radicals, which have the potential of causing oxidative tissue damage, triggering inflammation and problems like allergies and asthma.

Tomatoes, Apples & Oranges

The anti-inflammatory effects of the antioxidant vitamin C present in tomatoes, apples, and oranges is said to offer protection against nasal allergies and wheezing.

Grapes

The skins of red grapes are filled with antioxidants and resveratrol, which reduces overall inflammation in the body. The Crete diet study found that grapes gave significant protection against allergies and wheezing.

Additional Allergy Support

As always, natural remedies can be used to help manage allergy symptoms. Commonly used herbs including fenugreek, fennel, anise and sage may help to stimulate nasal cilia- tiny hairs in your nose that sweep pollen and dust out of the passages.

Annual nettle has been used for many centuries in folk medicine to support clear eyes and noses. Plantain also has a long history of traditional use in the support of respiratory health.

For fast relief,Triple Complex BronchoSoothe™ is a homeopathic remedy that relieves bronchospasm and tightening of the chest to open airways during an asthma attack.

To maintain ongoing respiratory health and lung functioning, visit  BioVent Drops

Quercitin is a well-known flavonoid, usually found mostly in apples and onions, and is considered to be a 'building block' for other flavonoids. Quercitin is also known for its ability to maintain healthy histamine levels and support healthy circulation. The homeopathic ingredient Arsen alb is another ingredient that has proved beneficial in the maintenance of a healthy, clear respiratory system.

Lawsuit Raises Safety Issues Related to Competing Brands of Fish Oil Supplements

On Tuesday, March 2, 2010, a lawsuit was filed in a San Francisco Superior Court, which alleged that several popular brands of fish oil supplements have illegally undisclosed and unnecessarily high levels of contamination from toxic PCB compounds. Widely regarded as cancer-causing agents, PCB’s were outlawed from manufacture in 1979. The lawsuit names eight manufacturers and retailers of fish and fish liver oils (as well as shark and shark liver oils) which tested positive for PCB contamination that exceeded the limits approved for human consumption under California’s Proposition 65. The initial defendants named are CVS Pharmacy, Inc.; General Nutrition Corp. (GNC); Now Health Group, Inc.; Omega Protein, Inc.; Pharmavite LLC (Nature Made brand); Rite Aid Corp.; Solgar, Inc.; and TwinLab Corp.

These allegations should give consumers cause for grave concern. Although many currently marketed fish oil supplements feature claims of being “treated” to remove or reduce levels of PCB’s and other toxins, many fail to accurately state the residual levels of PCB’s remaining after “treatment”. This lack of disclosure leaves consumers completely in the dark, not knowing whether or not they are ingesting high levels of PCB’s when taking their omega-3 supplement. The allegations are deeply disturbing, as many consumers regularly take their supplements every day.

Sealogix’s Safety is Guaranteed by Independent Third Party Testing

We supply our customers with truly superior quality fish oil supplements that are subjected to rigorous third-party testing for concentration and purity. In fact, we were among the first to implement independent testing and to make readily available the results of those tests to our customers.

FishOilBtls
To guarantee the outstanding quality of every bottle of Sealogix Omega-3 Pharmaceutical Grade Fish Oil, we follow a strict and methodical formula for production. First, the omega-3's in Sealogix are sourced from fish located in some of the purest waters in the world, from fisheries that are renewable and fully-sustainable. Next, our fish oil undergoes several processes (including molecular distillation and winterization) to concentrate and purify the oil.

In addition to making certain that Sealogix fish oils are well below the safety level established by the Council for Responsible Nutrition (CRN) for PCB's, the purification process ensures that they are free from mercury and heavy metal contamination (including lead, arsenic and cadmium). Furthermore, our refinement process helps to ensure that Sealogix is a fresh and stable product. Fish oils contain polyunsaturated fatty acids, which are prone to oxidation, thus risking the reduction of the shelf-life of the fish oil. Our premium fish oils are naturally processed to greatly reduce oxidative elements like peroxide and acids, resulting in stabilization that impedes further oxidation and prolongs the shelf-life of Sealogix products.

Each batch is then tested by International Fish Oil Standards (IFOS), a non-affiliated, third party laboratory that is considered the world’s premier fish oil testing agency. IFOS uses multiple scientific tests and analyses on every batch of Sealogix. In fact, IFOS imposes more stringent requirements for contaminants and oxidation than the World Health Organization (WHO) and the Council for Responsible Nutrition (CRN). These tests ensure that our Sealogix customers are receiving a safe and effective fish oil supplement that they can feel confident providing to their families, and for themselves. Finally, we post the IFOS test results for each batch of Sealogix online, so our customers will know exactly what is contained in Sealogix Omega-3 Pharmaceutical Grade Fish Oil. We are proud to say that all Sealogix supplements have achieved IFOS’s highest possible rating for concentration and purity – five out of five stars. Go To Our IFOS Page.

Due to the superior quality, purity and concentration of these nutrients, Sealogix represents an exceptional value compared to other market brands. Click here to learn more about how Sealogix beats competing omega-3 brands and maintains exacting standards for safety.

Improve Your Night Vision in No Time!

Of all the changes that happen as we age, one of the most frustrating concerns is difficulty with night vision. I know I don’t have to tell you how distressing it can be to wonder how long you’ll be able to continue driving or going out at night.

After years of wear and tear, your pupils don’t dilate or expand as well as they used to. This reduces the amount of light that enters your retinas, your eyes’ main “image receptors.” With less light, your eyes don’t adapt as well…plain and simple. It can be so bad that many of my patients tell me it feels like they’re wearing sunglasses, even when they’re not.

Up until now, the best support we had was bilberry. It definitely works and has been a mainstay of my Vision Essentials formula. But the heavy-duty research today is showing the benefits of black currant. It’s truly the “next generation” of nutrients for night vision support.

Studies show black currant can help your eyes adjust to the dark—in just 30 minutes! Plus, it reduces eye fatigue when you’re performing visually tiring tasks. In today’s world, with television and computer monitors, that’s extremely important.

This is such a huge breakthrough that I’ve just updated my Vision Essentials formula to give you 200 mg of black currant extract—which is the highest research dose—in the best, most bioavailable form—so you’re getting maximum vision support.

Plus, I also updated Vision Essentials to give you pure beta-carotene based on the newest eye health research studies at the National Institutes of Health…

All in all, you’re getting 19 powerful nutrients for the health of your eyes and your vision

Each nutrient I included in Vision Essentials is crucial to healthy eyes, especially as you age. This unique formula supports every single aspect of your vision health, and helps to shield you from damaging UV rays. But most importantly, it gives you real results—such as being able to see more clearly at night.
If you’ve been taking Vision Essentials, I guarantee you’ll love the results you get with this new and improved formula. And if you’ve been waiting to give it a try, there’s no better time to start so you can continue to enjoy a lifetime of healthy vision.

To your health,

Fish Oil Supplements Beat Psychotic Mental Illness

Article From The BBC News Feb 2, 2010 - http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/health/8490937.stm

Taking a daily fish oil capsule can stave off mental illness in those at highest risk, trial findings suggest.

A three-month course of the supplement appeared to be as effective as drugs, cutting the rate of psychotic illness like schizophrenia by a quarter.

The researchers believe it is the omega-3 in fish oil - already hailed for promoting healthy hearts - that has beneficial effects in the brain.

A "natural" remedy would be welcomed, Archives of General Psychiatry says.

"The finding that treatment with a natural substance may prevent, or at least delay, the onset of psychotic disorder gives hope that there may be alternatives to antipsychotic drugs," the study authors said.

Antipsychotic drugs are potent and can have serious side effects, which puts some people off taking them.

Fish oil supplements, on the other hand, are generally well tolerated and easy to take, say the scientists.

The international team from Austria, Australia and Switzerland tested the treatment in 81 people deemed to be at particularly high risk of developing psychosis.

Natural choice

Their high risk was down to a strong family history of schizophrenia, or similar disorders, or them already showing mild symptoms of these conditions themselves.

For the test, half of the individuals took fish oil supplements (1.2 grams of omega-3 fatty acids) for 12 weeks, while the other half took only a dummy pill. Neither group knew which treatment they were receiving.

Dr Paul Amminger and his team followed the groups for a year to see how many, if any, went on to develop illness.

Two in the fish oil group developed a psychotic disorder compared to 11 in the placebo group.

Based on the results, the investigators estimate that one high-risk adult could be protected from developing psychosis for every four treated over a year.

They believe the omega-3 fatty acids found in the supplements may alter brain signalling in the brain with beneficial effects.

Alison Cobb, of the mental health charity Mind, said: "If young people can be treated successfully with fish oils, this is hugely preferable to treating them with antipsychotics, which come with a range of problems from weight gain to sexual dysfunction, whereas omega-3s are actually beneficial to their general state of health.

"These are promising results and more research is needed to show if omega-3s could be an alternative to antipsychotics in the long term."

Soothe Joint Pain With MediBeads

0909_mediBeads_prodShot If you’ve ever had a sore back, shoulder pain, or discomfort due to arthritis, you’ve probably used a heating pad or some type of heat pack. And chances  are you felt some relief as it stimulated blood flow to the affected site. But the fact is, most heat therapy devices don’t provide optimal relief because they only provide dry heat. Moist heat, on the other hand, not only gives you longer relief, but also penetrates deeper, making it much more effective. Plus, many heating pads and gel packs heat up unevenly, or they get uncomfortably hot. Not to mention the fact that with electric heating pads, you’re literally “tied” to one spot by the cord!

But I’ve discovered new, portable moist heat wraps that work much better to give you fast and soothing relief. They’re called MediBeads Moist Heat-Cold Wraps, and they’re truly the next generation in heat therapy. This incredible technology provides deep-penetrating moist heat after only minutes in your microwave! The entire wrap warms up evenly to give you the perfect level of warmth to stimulate your body’s healing mechanisms and circulation. And it maintains that consistent therapeutic temperature—up to 30 minutes. Plus, it’s “green” because it can be used over and over again—without losing any of its healing properties.

Each wrap is filled with tiny patent-pending beads that draw water from the air and release it as clean, pure moisture. Once you heat these bead-filled wraps, this moisture penetrates into your muscles to relieve your pain and is incredibly soothing. You’ll notice a tremendous difference from other heating devices right away. First, you don’t heat it in boiling water. In fact, there’s no water involved at all—so no mess or danger of burning yourself. Then, as soon as you apply the wrap, you’ll actually feel the heat penetrate deep into your sore muscles and joints, giving you much needed relief. And this moist heat comes lightly from the beads. It’s not wet or damp, but steam-like moisture.

In addition, the outer cloth layer that holds these beads in place feels soft against your skin. But the advanced design doesn’t stop there. MediBeads Wraps come in several different shapes and sizes to target either large areas of discomfort (like your lower back) or smaller body parts, such as your wrists. Some are short sleeves you simply slide your arm or leg into. Each size and shape literally hugs your body part for complete hands-free mobility. You can heat it, put it on, and go about making dinner, reading a book, or whatever you need to do. These Wraps provide safe, effective, odorless, moist heat therapy in complete comfort.

What Is A Canker Sore & How Do You Prevent Them

Canker_melts_24_box_front_large What is a Canker Sore?

Aphthous ulcers (more commonly known as canker sores) are an ulceration of the mucosal membrane in the mouth. Modern science has yet to pinpoint the exact cause but studies have linked stress, genetics and (for some people) triggering foods and/or chemicals. Often confused with cold sores (which are related to herpes and form on the lips or face) canker sores are not viral or contagious and form only inside the mouth.

Women are more likely than men to develop recurring aphthous ulcers and young adults suffer more frequently than older adults. Lacerations such as cuts from braces or accidental biting of the lip or cheek can also lead to canker sores. About 20% of people get recurring aphthous ulcers and more than 60% of people will develop a canker sore at least once in their lifetime. Canker sores typically form on the floor of the mouth, the cheeks, the tongue, or on the soft palate and last 1-2 weeks.

What Can You Do To Prevent Them?

Minimize stress: take time off to relax, eat right and get plenty of sleep.

Take care of your mouth: Brush and floss daily! Be careful when eating dry, crunchy foods. Any sharp, hard edges in your mouth can cause cuts that lead to canker sores. Also, excessive dryness of the mouth can lead to canker sores. For some people, triggering foods like nuts, spices, or food high in acidic content can lead to sores. Sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS), found in some toothpastes, also seems to cause canker sores in some people.

What Makes CankerMelts Work So Well?

Glycyrrhiza (licorice root) extract and added ingredient collagen (a protein) have a soothing and healing effect on the painful canker sore. The all-natural patch of hydrophilic gums slowly dissolves in the mouth, releasing the active ingredient over 2-6 hours precisely in the afflicted area. The absence of any chemical adhesives ensures that there will be no damage to the mucosal lining of the mouth that could potentially cause more painful sores.

CankerMelts is the best treatment for canker sores. Recent clinical trials at the University of Washingon’s School of Dentistry, consistently considered one of the nation’s premier centers of dental research and education, suggest that CankerMelts is more effective than any other non-prescription treatments and equally effective as prescription treatments in relieving pain and accelerating healing. Use CankerMelts today for freedom from your painful mouth sores.

• Relieves pain in minutes
• Heals sores in 1-5 days
• Works well with braces & dentures
• Time releases soothing collagen and natural medication, not numbing chemicals.

The Best Vitamin K For Your Arteries And Bones

Written By Julian Whitaker, MD

For years, vitamin K has been the neglected stepchild in the world of nutrition, while vitamins C, D, E, beta-carotene, and others grabbed all the attention. Groundbreaking research, however, is finally propelling vitamin K into the limelight.

This is long overdue because of vitamin K’s plethora of health benefits. Because most of us don’t get enough vitamin K in our diets, we all should sit up and take notice.

Vitamin K’s specific function wasn’t understood until the 1970s. We now know that it helps orchestrate the movement of calcium in the body. This vitamin not only plays a critical role in getting calcium from our bloodstream into our bones, but it is also involved in the health of your arteries and other tissues. Herein lies the calcium paradox: you need calcium in your bones, but you want it to stay out of your soft tissues and arteries.

Some researchers suggest that a high calcium intake is the problem. But the real issue is not getting enough vitamin K to shuttle the calcium into your bones where it belongs. So it seems obvious that we should all increase our daily intake of foods rich in vitamin K—but it’s not that simple. There’s more to the vitamin K story.

There are two types of natural vitamin K—K1, found primarily in leafy greens, and K2, most abundant in fatty meat, egg yolks, and fermented products such as cheese, sauerkraut, and natto (by far the richest source). Unfortunately, vitamin K1 is poorly absorbed. And you don’t want to go overboard on the K2-rich foods that also contain a lot of saturated fat. Furthermore, K1 is more involved in blood clotting, while K2 is more protective of the bones and soft tissues.

So, how do you increase your levels of K2? With nutritional supplements. But here again, you need to take the right type.

Vitamin K2 has several subtypes, including MK-4 and MK-7. The one to look for is MK-7. The “7” indicates that there are seven side chains attached to the main molecule. The more side chains, the longer it stays in your system, allowing more time to shuttle calcium out of your arteries and into your bones. A lot of supplements use the MK-4 form of K2, but I think that’s just “settling.” That’s why I recommend the Healthy Directions MK-7—it’s the right form at my recommended dose of 150 mcg daily.
I guarantee you’ll be hearing much more about vitamin K in the future. As you can see, I’m very enthusiastic about this safe, natural way of getting calcium to your bones. I’ve made it part of my daily supplement regimen, and I urge you to consider doing the same. Learn more about the best form of vitamin K2.

Anyone concerned about their bones, arteries, or both should seriously consider supplementing with vitamin K2—but make sure you get the right form. MK-7 is far more bioavailable and active than any other K2. Click here to learn more.

Want A Dazzling White Smile In 12 Days? Teeth Whitening Comes With Its Risks

While some people are blessed with bright, white teeth, most people aren't that lucky.

Teeth-whitening products have become increasingly popular, and depending on the condition of your teeth and your budget, there are several options available if you'd like to go a few shades brighter. Between the coffee you can't get through the morning without and the occasional glass of wine you sip at dinner, it happens: Your pearly whites become less so. Much of what you eat and drink every day contributes to staining your teeth.

Fortunately, there are many safe teeth whitening products which could correct the problem. The downside is that they can also cause occasional side effects, such as tooth sensitivity, gum irritation, bluish enamel and uneven whiteness. Worse case scenario, the possibility of the whitening or bleaching chemicals seeping into a cracked tooth or cavity, could cause internal damage which could a root canal.

If there is pain and sensitivity after using the teeth whitening product, the American Dental Association advises that it could stop within a week or two after discontinuing the whitening treatment. For those who have dental fillings, crowns or other dental works -  if you have particularly dark stains - talk with your dentist concerning the appropriate treatment or product. Overdoing teeth whitening can put you at higher risk or dental dangers, therefore take heed of any discomforts that you might feel during the process.

Could A Saline Spray Stop The Spread Of Flu, TB, SARS?

By Maggie Fox, Health and Science Correspondent WASHINGTON - Mon Nov 29, 2004 (Reuters) - Simply inhaling a saltwater spray could help prevent the spread of diseases including flu and tuberculosis, U.S. and German researchers reported on Monday.

They found a saline spray, administered using a device called a jet nebulizer, reduced the number of germ-spreading droplets by as much as 70 percent for six hours.

The findings, published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (news - web sites), could provide a way to help control epidemics such as the 2003 outbreak of Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) that spread globally and killed many health care workers trying to help patients.

The findings might also help control any global influenza pandemic, which almost all health experts believe is coming and which could kill millions.

The researchers noted much more study was needed before a saline spray device could be marketed to prevent the spread of diseases.

Gerhard Scheuch of Harvard University and colleagues there and at biotechnology firms Pulmatrix and Inamed tested 11 volunteers, giving them the oral spray and then measuring how many particles they released when coughing.

"Viruses known to spread from humans and/or animals through breathing, sneezing, and coughing include measles, influenza virus, adenovirus, African swine fever virus, foot and mouth disease virus, Varicella zoster virus (chickenpox), infectious bronchitis virus and smallpox, among others," they wrote. Bacteria spread in airborne droplets include anthrax, Escherichia coli and tuberculosis.

Scheuch's team noted some people produced many more little droplets or bioaerosols [germs] than others -- something also seen by investigators of the SARS outbreak that spread from China to cities around the world, killing 800 people. Such "super-spreaders" were responsible for several clusters of the often deadly viral infection.

That may mean that about half the population generally may produce more than 98 percent of all disease-spreading droplets, the researchers said.

"We found a sharp demarcation between individuals who are 'high' and 'low' producers of bioaerosols, small droplets of fluid exhaled from the lungs that may carry airborne pathogens," said David Edwards, a professor of biomedical engineering at Harvard, who worked on the study.

"Roughly half our subjects exhaled tens of bioaerosol particles per liter, while the other half exhaled thousands of these particles. The number of exhaled particles varied dramatically over time and among subjects, ranging from a low of one particle per liter to a high of more than 10,000."

They noticed that when volunteers breathed with their mouths open, as some people do habitually and which cold sufferers often must do, more droplets were spread than when they coughed or sneezed.

After the volunteers inhaled a salt spray via the nebulizer for six minutes, those prone to producing the most droplets saw a reduction of as much as 70 percent, the researchers said.

The saline seems to affect the surface tension of fluid inside the lungs, they found. Surface tension is a physical property of fluids that allows some bugs to walk on water, for instance, and that causes water to form droplets.

    What Is A Peptic Ulcer?

A peptic ulcer is a sore on the lining of the stomach or duodenum, which is the beginning of the small intestine. Peptic ulcers are common: One in 10 Americans develops an ulcer at some time in his or her life. One cause of peptic ulcer is bacterial infection, but some ulcers are caused by long-term use of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory agents (NSAIDs), like aspirin and ibuprofen. In a few cases, cancerous tumors in the stomach or pancreas can cause ulcers. Peptic ulcers are not caused by stress or eating spicy food.

    What is H. pylori?

Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) is a type of bacteria. Researchers believe that H. pylori is responsible for the majority of peptic ulcers.

    H. pylori infection is common in the United States: About 20 percent of people under 40 years old and half of those over 60 years have it. Most infected people, however, do not develop ulcers. Why H. pylori does not cause ulcers in every infected person is not known. Most likely, infection depends on characteristics of the infected person, the type of H. pylori, and other factors yet to be discovered.

Researchers are not certain how people contract H. pylori, but they think it may be through food or water.

Researchers have found H. pylori in the saliva of some infected people, so the bacteria may also spread through mouth-to-mouth contact such as kissing.

How does H. pylori cause a peptic ulcer?

    H. pylori weakens the protective mucous coating of the stomach and duodenum, which allows acid to get through to the sensitive lining beneath. Both the acid and the bacteria irritate the lining and cause a sore, or ulcer.

    H. pylori is able to survive in stomach acid because it secretes enzymes that neutralize the acid. This mechanism allows H. pylori to make its way to the "safe" area--the protective mucous lining. Once there, the bacterium's spiral shape helps it burrow through the lining.

What are the symptoms of an ulcer?

Abdominal discomfort is the most common symptom. This discomfort usually

    • is a dull, gnawing ache

    • comes and goes for several days or weeks

    • occurs 2 to 3 hours after a meal

    • occurs in the middle of the night (when the stomach is empty)

    • is relieved by eating

    • is relieved by antacid medications

    Other symptoms include

    • weight loss

    • poor appetite

    • bloating

    • burping

    • nausea

    • vomiting

Some people experience only very mild symptoms, or none at all.

    Emergency Symptoms

If you have any of these symptoms, call your doctor right away:

    • sharp, sudden, persistent stomach pain

    • bloody or black stools

    • bloody vomit or vomit that looks like coffee grounds

They could be signs of a serious problem, such as

    • perforation--when the ulcer burrows through the stomach or duodenal wall

    • bleeding--when acid or the ulcer breaks a blood vessel

    • obstruction--when the ulcer blocks the path of food trying to leave the stomach

Signs That You Have Hemorrhoids & What Causes Them

    General Hemorrhoids Symptoms

Hemorrhoids are abnormally swollen veins in the rectum and anus. They are similar to varicose veins you might see on a person's legs. When bulging hemorrhoid veins are irritated, they cause surrounding membranes to swell, burn or itch. This can become very painful, and bleeding may even occur.

Hemorrhoids are caused by too much pressure in the rectum, forcing blood to stretch and bulge the walls of the veins, sometimes rupturing them.

There are two types of hemorrhoids (external and internal) and the symptoms for both are different.

    External Hemorrhoid Symptoms

External hemorrhoids cause most of the hemorrhoid symptoms we commonly hear about such as pain, burning, and itching. An external hemorrhoid is usually a form of hemorrhoids outside of the anus. Swollen veins will form a lump around the anal opening and if a blot clot develops, the lump will become a thrombosed hemorrhoid. This is extremely painful and one of the most obvious signs of hemorrhoid.

    Internal Hemorrhoid Symptoms

Internal hemorrhoids are a lot less painful and thus its symptoms are harder to detect. This form of hemorrhoids is less painful because of the lack of nerve endings inside your anal canal. The basic symptom of internal hemorrhoids is itchiness. Another good sign of internal hemorrhoids is a slight bleeding (you’ll be able to see some blood on toilet paper or in your toilet bowl) after a visit to the toilet.

Hemorrhoids have two main causes: diet, and toilet strain. Studies have also shown that these two causes are linked because eating bad food can lead to constipation which then leads to straining on the toilet.

    Diet

A diet that lacks fiber contributes to hemorrhoids. This is why the western diet which is rich in processed foods has been linked to causing hemorrhoids. The simple treatment or solution to this is to take in more fiber foods such as fiber rich cereal, bananas and bread (just a few examples).

    Toilet Straining

The style of our modern toilets seems to be more comfortable, but actually encourages straining. And people who read while sitting in the toilet also stand a higher chance of getting hemorrhoids due to the extra pressure to the anal veins which are caused by sitting in the toilet for too long.

While diet and toilet straining seem to be the main cause of hemorrhoids, there are other factors involved. Other common hemorrhoid causes include aging, diarrhea, constipation, overuse of laxatives and even pregnancy.

Regardless of the causes of hemorrhoids, you should seek treatment immediately because hemorrhoid rarely heal by itself (hemorrhoids may subside and disappear it is bound to recur). Hence, you should use a hemorrhoid cure that can help you get rid of hemorrhoids permanently once and for all!

There are few places you can enter without being forced to touch a doorknob, but the Centers for Disease Control report that you should be more aware of your next grand entrance (or exit), as colds, the influenza virus, staph germs, and even HPV (the human papillomavirus) can be transmitted via a common doorknob.

While you can’t live in fear of all doorknobs, taking extra precautions can help keep you healthy. Wash your hands frequently, especially before eating or right as you get home, and avoid touching your face.

Try BaniFlu™, a homeopathic remedy that protects against flu virus and germs and is safe for all ages.

    “Friends” Who Follow You Home

At home or on the road, few women go anywhere without their purse. An ABC News investigation inspected many handbags, and many had thousands of bacteria present, with one whopper having 6.7 million present! Over half of the bags tested were contaminated with fecal bacteria. As purses are thrown on the bathroom floor to the car seat to the kitchen counter, the potential for illness is high, as cross contamination to food preparation areas or even hands-to-face contact occurs.

The same risk of bacteria and germs could therefore likely be associated with suitcases, as they are transferred many times from baggage handlers to taxis to hotel rooms. Keep antibacterial wipes handy and clean your handbag and suitcase, especially the handles and bottom.

In addition, travelers should be especially careful in hotels, as the Environmental Protection Agency says bedbugs are on the rise and becoming an increasing health problem. When returning home, don’t throw your suitcase right on the bed. Instead, clean it with a brush and vacuum inside, and wash all its contents.

Showers, Saunas & Swimming Pools – Not Safe Havens

After a long day of traveling or dealing with demanding family members, escaping to the comfort of a steamy shower may seem like just the trick to wash away the worries of the day. However, a recent study from the University of Colorado found dirty showerheads to be full of bacteria, while other reports from the CDC and hotel case studies showed bacteria and diseases transmitted via hot tubs and saunas, from pneumonia originating from legionella bacteria via inhalation of water aerosols to digestive, skin, ear, respiratory, eye, and even neurological infections from bacteria, parasites and other pathogens that can even survive chlorine in swimming pools.

While some may find it laughable, the best way to stay safe is to stay clear of any pool, sauna or hot tub unless you know it’s properly maintained. At home, be sure to thoroughly clean your showerheads regularly, and while away, if you’re unsure of cleanliness, request an extra cleaning.

5-Star Ratings Don’t Always Equate to Safety

The CDC estimates that 76 million cases of foodborne infections occur annually in the United States, leading to 323,000 hospitalizations. From contaminated work surfaces to dirty hands, improper food preparation is the main culprit of infection.

While the FDA has reported 15 foodborne illness-inducing organisms, five are responsible for the worst illnesses: Salmonella, E. coli O157 and other Shiga toxin-producing E. coli, Campylobacter, Listeria, and Toxoplasma.

You might want to check out your local restaurant inspection reports online before ordering takeout or heading to that pricey bistro up the street, or offer to lend a (clean) hand to your hostess who is preparing your holiday meal. And if you’re staying at a hotel, don’t be shy to ask for a new water glass. Fox 5 in Atlanta uncovered hotel room glasses that had never been properly sanitized in a dishwasher, but simply clothed off by housekeeping and returned to the sink counter or nightstand.

    Stay Well All Year

Your main concern should be boosting immunity, as it’s your body’s first line of defense against illness. Natural remedies can provide the added support the body needs. Astragalus membranaceous (also called 'huang qi') is a natural rejuvenating tonic shown to have an excellent effect on immune system health and functioning. Viscum album is also commonly known to enhance the immune-stimulating properties of other ingredients, and it encourages repair of damaged cells.

Other natural ingredients with immune boosting properties are Inula helenium, Withania somnifera, Hypoxis Rooperi (extract of African Potato), Mentha piperita, Solidago virgaurea, Crataegus oxycanthoides, Schizandra chinensis, and Olea europea (extract of Olive leaf).

All of these powerful ingredients are found in nature’s medicine chest and will go a long way in helping you strengthen your immune system against illness, disease, and infection, so you can make the most of the holiday season and everyday.

Natural Companies Being Bought Out To Look Healthier

I was just reading an article about how companies that have been offering natural, safe products are being bought out by bigger companies that haven't had the best track records in terms of "being safe." It's a smart move on their part - let the little natural company build up a trusted name for itself, by it and make you look better - like you care. Oh, wait - that's not happening because some of those companies are dropping the brand they bought. For example Odwalla was purchased by Coca-Cola. Odwalla was known for their fresh squeezed orange juice but Coca-cola dropped them because of the extended travel required to get to their distributors. Burt's Bees was bought by Clorox. I remember going into a health food store and seeing this brand exclusively in smaller mom and pop type stores and it make you feel good about using their all-natural lip balm. Clorox wanted to clean up their image and seem more "natural" so they bought Burt's Bees and no it's found in major chain retailers. Lastly, Tom's of Maine natural toothpaste was bought by Colgate-Palmolive which, as you know, is a competitor in the toothpaste market. Colgate toothpaste is required under USA law to put a warning label on the package.  Colgate owns other products that had to be recalled due to safe levels of dioxins. I can personally tell you I tried Colgate once and it burned the heck out of my mouth and my husband's mouth and it wasn't pretty with inside mouth skin peeling. Colgate stated we must have had an allergic reaction. Maybe I can believe that for one of us but not both of us.

In closing, be sure to check the labels when you're buying products you once loved and trusted because they may have been bought out to clean up a not so healthy companies image.

Keeping Your Dog & Cat Safe From Toxins In The Home

We often get calls and emails from concerned dog and cat parents that their dog is licking uncontrollably or is losing hair all of a sudden or they are sick and no one can figure out why. The first thing I ask is if anything has changed inside or outside of their homes or if they are using any new products. Dogs and cats love to explore, taste, rub against and roll around in all sorts of things—many of which contain harmful toxins. Their sense of smell is thousands of times greater than ours so while we may think something has a slight hint of fragrance they are overloaded from the smell. When you scrub your floor your dog or cat oftentimes runs across it when it's still wet (at least that's happened in my house a million times) and then will lick their paws to clean them and ingest harsh chemicals which can eventually lead to death. Items to be careful of inside the home are Wall/floor/toilet bowl cleaners, bleach, detergents, rust removers, metal polish, drain cleaners, ammonia, oven cleaners, furniture polish, floor wax and all those lovely air fresheners (just think of what they are doing to you too!).

Now let's move outside the home. Chemical fertilizers and pesticides are a major source of environmental toxins. A study at the School of Veterinary Medicine, Purdue University, revealed that the exposure to lawns treated with herbicides four or more times a year doubled a dog’s risk of canine lymphoma.  The Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association reported that, when exposed to chemically treated lawns, some breeds of dogs were four to seven times more likely to suffer from bladder cancer.  How many times have you spilled antifreeze in the driveway? Antifreeze has a sweet taste that animals love and can be fatal in a dose as small as 1 teaspoon because it is made with ethylene glycol. Also, de-icing salts used to melt snow and ice on your walkways and driveway can irritate paws and can be poisonous if licked off. Wash and dry your pet’s paws as soon as they come in from the outside.

These are just a few of many things to watch out for that you may not even give a second thought to when purchasing. When choosing cleaning products look for items that are labeled pet and child safe (yes, babies love to lick their hands too when they come into contact with anything) to make sure you are keeping your family safe.  Trilogy carries an excellent line of environmentally friendly cleaning products that you can feel good about using. Although our cleaning products are industrial-strength, they are safe for use in the home. Additionally, these products represent the latest in microbial technology, with friendly bacteria that eliminate the organic wastes that cause odor, rather than just masking the smell.

    8 Tips for Arthritis

Tip 1: Make Sure You Really Have Osteoarthritis

While to some of you, today's tip might be very basic. It is absolutely essential that you make sure your diagnosis is correct before you begin wasting money on treatments that are not designed to help your specific situation.

Tip 2: Searching For Just Arthritis Pain Relief? You Shouldn't!

Doctors are very quick to address your joint pain with what has become a "standard" response. Normally, they tell you to take NSAIDS like Aspirin, Advil, Motrin, Ibuprofen, and Acetaminophen, or prescribe COX-2 inhibitors such as Vioxx and Celebrex.

Tip 3: Keeping Your Weight in Balance is Key To Taking Control of Your Osteoarthritis!

If your osteoarthritis is affecting your load-bearing joints, keeping your weight within normal ranges is important. Load-bearing joints of course refers to any portion of your body that would be affected by excessive weight. Hips, knees, feet and spine are all load-bearing joints.

Tip 4: The Arthritis Fighting Diet

The most common foods to avoid are:
    # sugar
    # caffeine
    # citrus
    # salt
    # red meat
    # dairy products
    # additives
    # soft drinks
    # corn
    # flour

Tip 5: Fighting Arthritis Through Proper Exercise!

As best you can, try to keep painful joint areas in motion, even in a limited manner. Exercise is good for joints affected by osteoarthritis. Even if you don't think you can exercise, you can. Even the lightest exercise can go along way to maintaining joint mobility and health. A good exercise routine is key to beating arthritis.

Tip 6: The Treatments: NSAIDs, Cox-II Inhibitors, Surgery, & Glucosamine

The latest arthritis research has shown that there are some very effective alternatives that have no side effects, are completely safe, ease the pain and tend to the disease. This supplement is Glucosamine.

Recently, Glucosamine has been making a lot of headlines. Glucosamine is an over-the-counter dietary supplement that has been shown to be effective in the treatment of osteoarthritis and joint pain. Glucosamine stimulates the production of glycosaminoglycans (GAG's), the important proteins found in cartilage plus proteoglycans, the water holding molecules that make up the cartilage.

Tip 7: How to Evaluate a Glucosamine Product

Glucosamine compounds have opened up an entirely new avenue for all of you who suffer from osteoarthritis. There is nothing new about the use of Glucosamine as a way of easing an arthritic condition. For many years it has been used in Asia and Europe before the English speaking medical community caught on. However, you have to be very, very careful when selecting Glucosamine products.

Your selection should be based on four factors.

You must consider the quality of Glucosamine, method of delivery to body, additional ingredients in the product, and of course, price.

Simply put, the higher quality of Glucosamine you use, the greater your relief will be. Many companies use medium grade Glucosamine so you must be careful to look for the highest quality. You need to look for pharmaceutical quality Glucosamine if you want the fastest and fullest relief and healing.

Secondly, the method of delivery can make the difference between no pain relief and your personally desired pain relief. Most products produced after the breakthrough news of the 1999 Lancet medical journal Glucosamine study, were rushed to the market. In this haste, these companies did not take any time to do tests on their product. They simply assumed pill form would be the most effective. The latest research however, has shown that Glucosamine in liquid form is much more effective. In selecting a Glucosamine product, you should look for one that is liquid form.

Also, crucial to the effectiveness of the product, is the other ingredients that are included in the product. Glucosamine alone is not a cure all. There simply is no cure for arthritis. To receive true help in an arthritic state, you need to look for products that combine a number of arthritis fighting ingredients. You should look for a product that besides Glucosamine Sulfate and Glucosamine HCL, it also contains arthritis-fighting ingredients such as chondroitin, boswellin, bromelain, omega 3 & 6, yucca, manganese ascorbate, and vitamins A, C, and E.

When considering price, you must take care to determine exactly how much supply you are purchasing. Many companies engage in what can only be called a "deceptive" practice. They often will include 60 pills, or 32 oz. of the product, but they don't make it clear that you have to take 6 pills or 4 oz. a day. You think you have purchased a month supply when often you will run out in less than 2 weeks. A good price for a quality liquid Glucosamine product with many of the above ingredients synergistically combined is around $30.

My recommendation for Glucosamine products is Syn-flex®, a 98% pure liquid formula that combines all the ingredients that are essential for pain relief and joint healing.

Tip 8:. 12 Ingredients that Will Ease Your Arthritis Pain

In alleviating arthritis pain, there are twelve key compounds that you should be taking for maximum relief. These are Glucosamine, chondroitin, boswellin, bromelain, omega 3 & 6, yucca, manganese ascorbate, and vitamins A, C, and E.

    Premarin, Prempro & Provera Lawsuit

A federal jury on Thursday ordered Wyeth Pharmaceuticals and Upjohn Co. to pay more than $27 million to a Little Rock, Ark., woman who got breast cancer after taking hormone replacement therapy.

The jury on Thursday ruled that Donna Scroggin, who sued the companies in 2004, should receive $19.3 million from Wyeth and $7.7 million from Upjohn Co. in punitive damages. Jurors last month ruled in favor of Scroggin and said that Wyeth inadequately warned her that its drugs Premarin and Prempro carried an increased risk of breast cancer. The lawsuit also named Upjohn Co., the maker of Provera.

The jury ruled last month that Scroggin receive $2.75 million in compensatory damages.

Both drugs remain on the market and carry the approval of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, and both continue to be prescribed annually to hundreds of thousands of women to alleviate symptoms of menopause.
