Is Whey Protein Overrated?

Is Whey Protein Overrated www.AZJungle.com

Whey is a very popular ingredient in protein powders, especially in bodybuilding formulas. But is this commonly used ingredient all that it’s cracked up to be? In this post, we’ll look at the conventional wisdom and why whey might not be the best option for health-conscious consumers.

Let’s Talk Protein

It’s hard to understate the importance of consuming sufficient amounts of nourishing proteins. Your body needs quality protein to function properly, to build and repair tissues and to make enzymes, hormones and other key bodily chemicals. The amino acids in protein are the building blocks of bones, cartilage, muscles, hair and blood. So, there’s no controversy here … protein does a body good!

What Makes Whey Popular?

In the last decade or so, the media began educating consumers about the importance of getting an adequate amount of protein in their diet on a daily basis. That created a demand for a convenient and inexpensive source of protein. That’s when whey protein powders started on their journey to popularity.

Whey-t a Minute!

Unfortunately, whey protein has significant shortcomings, especially for those with sensitive stomachs. First, it’s derived from cow’s milk. Specifically, it is the liquid left over once milk has been curdled and strained. Moreover, it’s a by-product of the cheese-making process. It’s precisely due to its dairy origins that many people experience digestive issues consuming whey, such as bloating, gas, cramps, fatigue and/or loose stools. Formulators in-the-know attribute these reactions to whey’s lactose content, and many adults have some degree of lactose sensitivity.

Plant Power

Here’s our take. Animal-derived proteins are good, but they also may carry the dubious additions of saturated fat, cholesterol, added hormones and antibiotics. However, you can source excellent protein directly from plants without any of those nutritional drawbacks! For example, pea protein contains all nine essential amino acids and therefore is considered an excellent source of protein. Since it contains no dairy or soy, it’s regarded as a “clean source” of protein with zero gluten content. Hooray for plant power!

So, if you’re up for supplementing your diet with a protein powder, but you’re not interested in dealing with the possible digestive distress commonly associated with whey, try a plant protein powder instead!

Cancer Drug For Dogs (Paccal Vet-CA1 ) No Longer Conditionally Approved

February 9, 2017, FDA.gov

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration is giving notice that the agency is withdrawing the conditional approval for Paccal Vet-CA1 (paclitaxel for injection) at the request of the drug’s manufacturer, Oasmia Pharmaceutical AB. Paccal Vet-CA1 was intended to treat certain mammary and squamous cell carcinomas in dogs that have not received previous chemotherapy or radiation therapy. The conditional approval for Paccal Vet-CA1 is no longer in effect as of February 8, 2017. Paccal Vet-CA1 is now an unapproved animal drug with no legal marketing status and further sales of the drug are illegal.

Oasmia Pharmaceutical AB must stop marketing and distributors must stop distributing the drug to veterinary clinics. Veterinarians should stop using Paccal Vet-CA1, and pet owners whose dogs are on the drug should discuss other treatments with their veterinarians.

Only animal drugs intended for minor species, such as ferrets or fish, or for minor uses in a major species, such as to treat certain types of cancer in dogs, may be eligible for conditional approval. To receive a conditional approval, a drug company must prove, among other things, that the animal drug is safe and has a “reasonable expectation of effectiveness” when used according to the label for the proposed conditionally-approved use. Conditional approval allows the drug company to legally market the animal drug for up to five years. During this period, the company develops and submits to the FDA—and the agency reviews—the necessary data to prove that the drug meets the “substantial evidence” standard of effectiveness for full approval.

February 3, 2017 from FDA.gov

Out of an abundance of caution, Evanger’s Dog & Cat Food of Wheeling, IL is voluntarily recalling specific lots of its Hunk of Beef product because of a potential contaminant Pentobarbital, which was detected in one lot of Hunk of Beef Au Jus. Pentobarbital can affect animals that ingest it, and possibly cause side effects such as drowsiness, dizziness, excitement, loss of balance, or nausea, or in extreme cases, possibly death.

The specifically-identified lot numbers (as detailed below) of cans of 12-oz Hunk of Beef being voluntarily recalled were distributed to retail locations and sold online in the following States: Washington, California, Minnesota, Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Wisconsin, Ohio, Pennsylvania, New York, Massachusetts, Maryland, South Carolina, Georgia, and Florida, and were manufactured the week of June 6 – June 13, 2016.

The subject recall affects 5 lots of food that were produced from its supplier’s lot of beef, which is specifically used for the Hunk of Beef product and no other products. To date, it has been reported that five dogs became ill and 1 of the five dogs passed away after consuming the product with lot number 1816E06HB13. Evanger’s is proactively issuing a recall voluntarily so as not to risk potential exposure to pentobarbital in the product.

Evangers Dog Food Recall www.AZJungle

All Evanger’s suppliers of meat products are USDA approved. This beef supplier provides us with beef chunks from cows that are slaughtered in a USDA facility. We continue to investigate how this substance entered our raw material supply.

Because we source from suppliers of meat products that are USDA approved, and no other products have had any reported problems, we are not extending the recall to other supplier lots. This is the first recall for Evanger’s in its 82 years of manufacturing. Although it has been verified that little or no product remains on store shelves, if consumers still have cans with the aforementioned lot numbers, he or she should return it to the place of purchase for a full refund. Do You Know What The Single Most Dangerous Health Threat Is To Dogs And Cats?

Weight Loss Food And Treats For Dogs www.AZJungle.com

According to Newtown Square, Pa.-based Petplan, its most frequently claimed conditions have one thing in common: obesity.

“It’s no surprise that the biggest health threat to pets in 2017 is obesity,” said Dr. Ernie Ward, Petplan veterinary advisory board member and founder of the Association for Pet Obesity Prevention. “When you consider that over half of the nation’s dogs and cats are now overweight or obese, it literally is a growing problem.”

This year, Petplan challenges pet parents to get out and get active with furry friends to avoid the extra “fluff” that can exacerbate many of Petplan’s most commonly claimed conditions, including:

Tummy troubles: Overeating can easily lead to vomiting and diarrhea, Petplan’s No. 1 claimed conditions year after year; in fact, Petplan sees an average of 900 claims every month just for stomach issues. The cost for relief averages at $850.

The Big C: There have been some indications that certain types of cancer are more common in overweight or obese pets, and that can put a bump in pet parents’ budgets—the average vet bill for cancer is $2,033.

A gimpy gait: Lameness, or general limping, is often caused by arthritis—and extra pounds mean extra stress on pets’ joints (and wallets—the average cost to treat lameness is $966).

Lifes Abundance Weight Loss Food For Dogs www.AZJungleNot-so bee’s knees: Pets who pack on pounds are also at a greater risk for cranial cruciate ligament (CCL) injuries from added joint stress and weak muscles. CCL injuries are the priciest of Petplan’s common conditions, costing an average of $3,480 to repair.

On the go: Several things can cause a urinary tract infection in pets, but obese animals may be more at risk because they can’t clean those hard-to-reach places. The average cost to treat UTIs? $590!

Matters of the heart: Obesity usually comes with high blood pressure, poor organ function and low levels of activity—all things that contribute to cardiac disease and an average $1,232.

Back attack: The long and lows (think dachshund and basset Hhound) are particularly prone to intervertebral disc disease, and added weight can increase their chances of developing the disease—and a $2,014 vet bill.

Unlike many of these conditions, pet obesity is 100 percent preventable and curable, according to Petplan.

“In addition to daily exercise, swap fatty treats for lower-calorie options, or better yet opt for praise and playtime instead of snacks,” said Dr. Ward. “And know your pet’s calorie count—ask your vet how many calories your pet needs each day, and stick to that number.”

5 Basic Steps To A Happy New Year!

Behappy

2017 is FAST approaching and we know you want to be the best you can be in 2017! Are you ready to take control of your health and start making changes for the better?!?

1} Just Do It!

You may have heard the saying “SOMEDAY is not a day of the week!”  Stop procrastinating and commit to taking a small step every single day towards your health goals. Not drinking enough water? Add a glass in the morning and again in the afternoon. Eating too much sugar? Cut it down by 50%. Small steps = big gains in the long run!

2} Choose More Veggies

No matter what your health goals are, most everyone can benefit by adding more veggies to their diet. Try to add in at least one green vegetable to every single meal, and notice the difference. Better digestion, better skin, healthy blood sugar levels, weight loss and increased energy are just a few benefits of a plant-based diet!1

3} Be More Active

Being more active doesn’t necessarily mean hitting the gym. Meet a friend for a walk instead of sitting for a coffee to catch up. Stretch for 10 minutes every morning or evening before bed. Take the dog for a longer walk. Take a dance class or learn tai chi. Find an activity you enjoy and make it a part of your weekly routine!

4} Breathe Away Your Stress

Use the power of your breath to take control of any situation. By pausing to take a couple of deep breaths in and out, you can reset your nervous system and reduce your stress.2

5} Practice Gratitude

In positive psychology research, gratitude is strongly and consistently associated with greater happiness. Take a minute each morning to write down what you’re grateful for and notice how much happier your day is!

Did You Ever Stare Into Your Dogs Eyes And Wonder What They Are Thinking?

The Complexity of Canine Memory

What Is My Dog Thinking www.NaturalDogFoodStore

Have you ever sat staring deeply into your dog’s eyes, wondering “I wonder what you’re thinking?” Sure, they give us clues here and there, but as whole, the workings of your dog’s mind remains a mystery.

But there’s mounting evidence that we may have underestimated their mental capacities. I know when I was going through school and we would use words describing the emotions the pets seemed to feeling - love, anxiety, fear - we were often shut down with a stern, “Don’t anthropomorphize!” It was assumed that only humans were capable of such human-like emotions.

As we’ve studied more the amazing bonds that exist between humans and dogs, we’ve gotten better insight into the inner workings of their doggie brains. And while it’s true that we can’t say with 100% certainty what a dog thinks and feels (because you’d actually need to be able to talk to a dog in order for him to tell you that), I can tell you that the more we learn about their inner workings, the gap between people and dogs is narrowing. Each new study offers amazing insight into how smart, individual, and yes – emotional – they really are.

One of the most common tropes we hear about dogs is, “They live in the moment,” which assumes they don’t spend too much time thinking about the past. But all of us who share our lives with dogs have seen them react to something in a way that indicates they sure do remember things, thank you very much! As a veterinarian, “white coat syndrome”, the fearful reaction of a dog to a veterinarian in a white lab coat, is so well-documented that many of us just stopped wearing the jackets entirely.

And now science is finally showing, beyond a shadow of a doubt, that dogs remember much more than we previously thought possible.

What Is My Dog Thinking About www.NaturalDogFoodStore

A recent study of 17 dogs in Current Biology explored the idea of episodic memory in dogs. They began by training the dogs to “Do as I do”, i.e., to imitate their trainer’s behavior. In this case, the dogs were aware they were receiving a cue, a signal to say “pay attention to what I’m doing.”

Then the researchers repeated the experiment, but without giving the “Do as I do” cue beforehand. Regardless of what the person was doing, the dog was instructed to lie down. Afterwards, trainers gave the dogs the command to repeat what they had just observed. This forced the dogs to recall what they had observed using episodic memory. This form of memory centers around the ability to recall a specific event from the past, but you didn’t know you were supposed to remember it at the time it happened. Despite showing signs of surprise, the dogs were able to recall what they had seen and imitate the person’s actions.

By demonstrating this ability to mimic, the study designers showed that dogs are watching and storing what they see all around them. Like people, they appear to be dumping all of that input into a short term memory bank, and if the information isn’t needed, it gets tossed out. Much the same way I can tell you what I had for dinner last night but not last month, a dog’s brain is quite capable of assessing memories and storing those considered pertinent for survival. As a social species whose evolution is closely tied to ours, it makes sense that they actually think in many of the same ways.

So, the next time you do something embarrassing around your pup, don’t be so quick to think they won’t remember it. At least we know for certain they won’t be spilling our secrets via speech, right?

5 Amazing Facts About Cats

Yes, cats are nothing like dogs: they are enigmatic, independent, sometimes aloof and always entertaining. Their completely unique natures are, in my opinion, their most endearing feature. It should come as no surprise that in addition to their one-of-a-kind personalities, they also have some pretty exceptional physical features and roles to play in our society. Here are just five of my favorite unique cat facts!

Top 5 Amazing Cat Facts www.NaturalCatFoodStore.com

1. Cats can use their mouth to smell

Have you ever seen your cat take a big sniff, then pull their mouth back in what looks like a sneer? That’s called the flehmen response, and it’s one of the wonderful, weird things that makes cats so unique. Cats have a special organ called the vomeronasal organ wedged up between the hard palate and the nasal septum. The vomeronasal organ is used to analyze pheromones, which is an important means of communication in the feline world. If you’ve ever gotten a good whiff of cat urine, you may make the same face … but unlike us, cats are actually gaining extra information from that stimulus.

2. Cats are well adapted to high-heat environments

Have you ever seen a cat pant? Hopefully not, because they aren’t supposed to. We all know that dogs use panting to dissipate heat, while humans sweat. Aside from a negligible number of sweat glands in the paws, cats do neither! Evolved from desert-dwelling creatures, cats have extremely efficient kidneys that can concentrate urine to a very high degree, meaning they can survive longer than other mammals with less water without becoming dehydrated. I watch my dark-coated cat Penelope seek out blocks of sunlight all the time … like many cats, she thinks “The hotter, the better!” Meanwhile my dog is laying on the coldest spot of floor he can find.

5 Amazing Facts About Cats www.NaturalCatFoodStore.com

3. You can’t top a cat’s night vision

Cats are unusual in that they have both predator and prey adaptations. One of their most unique features is their slit pupil, which allows the pupil to contract more quickly than the circular pupils of dogs and humans. This means they adjust more quickly to changes in ambient light. They also have the largest eyes of any mammal relative to their size! They have several other adaptations meant to ensure they can see well at night, including more rods in the back of their retina as well as a tapetum lucidum, a reflective layer of tissue that gives their eyes that eerie green glow.

4. Cats could have changed the course of history

In the Middle Ages, the Black Death swept through Europe, killing off an estimated 25% of the continent. The causative agent of bubonic plague, Yersinia pestis, was found to be carried by fleas who moved about the countryside on rodents. During the Spanish Inquisition, cats were condemned as evil and killed by the thousands. This cat depopulation allowed the rodent population to explode, extending the effects of the plague. Who knows how many lives could have been saved if only cats had been spared and out hunting the plague carriers.

5. Hissing is a unique feline vocalization

Have you ever heard a happy cat hiss? Probably not. Though not all cats hiss, those that do are invariably upset or frightened. Experts believe hissing may actually have evolved as a mimicry of a snake hiss, a way to warn someone that whatever they are doing, the cat is not at all happy about it. If you have a cat who hisses, consider yourself lucky! It’s a clear warning to stop whatever is upsetting them before they escalate to the next level, something usually involving claws or teeth.

Protect Your Dog Or Cat From Toxic Holiday Plants

Protect Pets From Holiday Plants www.AZJungle

Veterinarians are frequently presented with questions about potential pet poisoning due to eating holiday plants. Some Christmas plants are toxic and others are not so this simple rule of thumb is our best advice to all pet parents to protect your pet from toxic holiday plants and poisoning:

It is best if your pets do not have access to any of your plants – that way you do not have to worry if the plant is toxic or not!

Common plants and the problems they can cause.

Poinsettias– We get a lot of calls about this pretty Christmas plant as it is thought to be toxic. Actually its toxicity is exaggerated. A 50 lb dog would have to ingest 1-1/4 pounds of poinsettia leaves, approximately 500-600 to reach a toxic level. If your dog or cat ingests a leaf or two there will likely be no effect. The leaves are bitter, though and may cause salivation, or vomiting, which is self limiting. It is still a good idea to keep them out of reach.

Christmas cacti– These are not considered to be toxic, however if your pet eats one, he or she may experience a mild gastric upset, vomiting or diarrhea. Generally treatment involves letting the stomach rest by withholding food and water for an hour or two.

Mistletoe– This plant is toxic but the toxicity varies with the species. Do not allow your pet to eat any parts of this plant. Symptoms of poisoning are vomiting, diarrhea, depression, abdominal pain, extreme low blood pressure and death. If your pet has ingested this call your veterinarian immediately.

Holly– This plant also can be toxic, but ingestion mostly causes salivation, and vomiting. It is an irritant to the mouth. You should wash your pet’s mouth out and call your vet as your pet may need to be hospitalized for supportive care.

Christmas trees and fir roping– The needles from these can cause tummy upsets in dogs or cats and are prickly so can cause eye issues. They are not poisonous but eating the needles is hard on the intestinal tract. Keep the needles swept up so your pets do not eat them.

What to do if your pet has been poisoned?

So what do you do if you think your pet has been poisoned by a holiday plant or something else?

Get in touch with your veterinarian or veterinary emergency hospital or a poison control center, and follow their instructions. If you do not have a local poison control center, you can call the ASPCA’s Animal Poison Control Center at (888) 426-4435 (a consultation fee may be applied to your credit card).

If you can’t get in touch with either one and the poisoning occurred within the last 3 hours, consider inducing vomiting (Important: Ask our Vet for the correct way to induce vomiting). Do not induce vomiting if your pet is unconscious, seizing, not able to stand, or is having trouble breathing. Do not induce vomiting if your pet has ingested a petroleum product or a strong acid or alkali or a cleaning solution. If your pet vomits save it in a plastic bag.

The best advice I can give you is to keep these things away from your pets and have the emergency numbers for your vet, your vet emergency hospital and the poison control posted in a prominent area.

Keep yourself and your pets safe this holiday season!

Is Your Dog Or Cat On A Prescription Food? If So, You Need To Check Out This Prescription Pet Food Lawsuit

Consumers cheated in prescription pet food scam

Prescription pet food sounds like a vital part of keeping our pets healthy and happy. Unfortunately, it is often no different from non-prescription pet food except in one important respect: Cost. At Walkup, Melodia, Kelly & Shoenberger, we are working to protect consumers cheated by pet food manufacturers and retailers.

Misrepresentation and collusion

What is the point of a prescription? In theory, prescriptions allow consumers access to restricted drugs based on a specific health need. A group of pet food manufacturers and retailers are using "prescriptions" to justify overcharging consumers for food that contains no restricted ingredients. Neither the FDA nor any other government agency mandates the prescription.

Our firm, Walkup, Melodia, Kelly & Schoenberger, is partnering with Pope McGlamry and Ward and Smith in a class action suit on behalf of the consumers overcharged due to the misrepresentation and illegal collusion of pet food retailers and manufacturers. The four main pet food brands involved in the suit include:

  • Hill's Prescription Diet
  • Purina Pro Plan Veterinary Diets
  • Royal Canin Veterinary Diet
  • Iams Veterinary Formula

These foods contain no drugs, medicines or ingredients that would have a significant on a pet's health when compared to any other pet food. The only difference is in the price charged to consumers.

Our award-winning firm has experience spanning 6 decades of 7 and 8 figure results. Our attorneys have successfully represented countless clients harmed by the neglect, incompetence or misdeeds of corporations. If the following conditions apply, you should consider contacting one of our skilled lawyers:

  • Have you purchased any of the pet food brands listed above over the past 4 years?
  • Were you told that your pet needed a pet food available by prescription only?
  • Were you referred to an on-site veterinarian (Banfield or BluePearl, for example) to write the prescription, with or without the need to examine your pet?

Call 844-321-9425 to inquire about joining the class action suit. (Original article on Walkup, Melodia, Kelly & Shoenberger)

Did Your Dog Or Cat's Name Make The Most Popular List Or The Wackiest Pet Names List?

Most Popular And Wackiest Dog And Cat Names www.AZJungle.com

For the second consecutive year, Bella and Max were the most popular pet names in America for dogs and cats, according to Nationwide, a provider of pet health insurance. This marks the fifth consecutive year that Bella has led the way as the most popular pet name in America for both dogs and cats.

Did your dog or cat make either list?

Although the top two monikers remained the same as last year, there were multiple changes to the top 10 for each species. In dogs, the name Cooper continued its growth in popularity and propelled to the eighth most popular name among canines—up more than 100 spots from three years ago. Among female dog names, Sophie and Maggie both decreased significantly and dropped out of the top 10, while Lola surged into the 10thspot. Among cats, Luna saw an incredible increase in popularity among cat owners and surged into fourth place after failing to break into the top 10 last year, while Sophie saw the most significant drop.

“Our annual review of the most common pet names gives us a unique view of popular trends among our members,” said Carol McConnell, DVM, MBA, vice president and chief veterinary officer for Nationwide. “Our data often shows increases in certain pop culture themes among pet monikers. The most significant theme has been the continued popularity of the name Bella, which has remained one of the top names ever since the ‘Twilight’ series was introduced more than 10 years ago.”

Despite these names being the most popular, many pet lovers choose less conventional names for their companions such as McLoven the StudMuffin and Agent Jack Meower, who were crowned as Nationwide’s Wackiest Pet Names earlier this year. BrdogAbout Salmonella and Listeria

Salmonella and Listeria can affect animals eating the product and there is a risk to humans from handling contaminated pet products, especially if they have not thoroughly washed their hands after having contact with the products or any surface exposed to these products.

Healthy people infected with Salmonella and Listeria monocytogenes should monitor themselves for some or all of the following symptoms: nausea, vomiting, diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, abdominal cramping and fever.

Consumers exhibiting these signs after having contact with this product should contact their healthcare provider. Consumers should also follow the simple handling tips on the package.

What caused the Recall

This recall was initiated after the FDA received two complaints associated with these products, including one complaint of two kitten illnesses and one complaint of a puppy death. Subsequent testing by the FDA of a 2 lb chub of beef for dogs and kitten grind collected at a veterinary office revealed the presence of Salmonella and Listeria monocytogenes. There is no direct evidence linking these unfortunate instances to contaminated product.

This recall is being made with the knowledge of the US Food and Drug Administration.

What to do

Consumers who have purchased the above lots of beef for dogs or kitten grind are urged to stop feeding them and return products to the place of purchase for a full refund. Or dispose of them immediately. Those with questions can email the company at blueridgebeefga@yahoo.com.

Have You Heard Of The Luuup? It's A 3 Sifting Tray Litter System And The Easiest Way To Clean A Cat Box!

Ok cat lovers - this is FANTASTIC! Litter boxes can be such an eye sore and a pain to clean. The Luuup is more than a litter box. It's functional, stylish and most of all, inspired!

It's super easy to use! Check out these easy peasy instructions:

1.Stack the three sifting trays so that the rockers on adjacent trays alternate and overlap as shown.

2. Add between 15 lbs, (7 kg.) , of clumping cat litter , (to an approximate depth of 3” - 4", (7-10 cm). All cats are unique when it comes to the use of their litter box. Be mindful to maintain a litter level that allows urine to clump before reaching the bottom of the tray.

3. To clean, lift the top tray and the waste is separated from the clean litter. Keep the sifting tray low inside the bottom tray while sifting to minimize dust. Being gentle helps minimize clump breakage.

4. After disposing of any waste, check the tray to make sure no litter clumps have adhered to the plastic surface. Wipe the tray clean with a paper towel, as necessary. If ever any small litter clumps get stuck in the slots, remove them before placing the tray back in the stack.

5. Turn the tray 180 degrees and place it at the bottom of the stack. You’ll know the bottom tray is turned the right way when it matches the same orientation as the top tray in the stack.

6. Lift the two tray stack containing the litter by the outer edge of the lower tray. Gently place the stack in the bottom tray and you're done. If the bottom tray is stacked incorrectly, the litter will rock back and forth, instead of nesting together. Simply remove the bottom tray and return it to the correct position if this happens.

BAM! You're Done!

Remember That Sick Dog Lawsuit Against Purina Beneful? Judge Said It Lacked Proof And Failed To Prove The Product Was Unsafe

Thought you would find this interesting. Beneful likes to glitz up their bags so people feel the food is healthy. They now have REAL meat (Is it really necessary to put the word REAL in front of chicken, beef, etc?). Here is what happened with the recent lawsuit -

Purina Beneful sick dog lawsuit lacked proof said judge

A federal judge in California ruled that the lawsuit failed to prove the product was unsafe.

Nestle Purina PetCare will not face a class action lawsuit over allegations that the company’s Beneful dry food sickened dogs, reported Law 360. On November 10, a California federal judge ruled that the proposed lawsuit failed to prove the product was unsafe.

History of Beneful class action law suit
On February 4, 2015, a California man filed a class action lawsuit against Purina, reported Petfood Industry. The lawsuit alleged negligence, misrepresentation, product liability and unfair business practices. The plaintiff sought more than US$5 million in damages, plus costs and fees.

The plaintiff, Frank Lucido claimed that Purina’s Beneful dog food injured his three dogs. Lucido said two of his dogs suffered and one of his dogs died after ingesting Beneful beginning January 15, 2015.

However, the dog that passed away, Dozer, was later determined to have died from a heart tumor, according to Wendy Vlieks, director of corporate public relations for Purina. The dog's death was dropped from the allegations.

Lucido claimed Purina added propylene glycol to Beneful. Propylene glycol is used in non-toxic antifreeze, food, beverages, medicines, e-cigarettes and other consumer goods.

"It is important not to confuse propylene glycol with ethylene glycol, which is the toxic substance used in conventional antifreeze," said Vlieks.

The class action lawsuit against Purina claimed that the company had received more than 3,000 online complaints about their food making dogs sick throughout the past four years. In some cases, the dogs reportedly suffered internal bleeding, weight loss, dehydration and other symptoms.

Purina’s response to allegations
On their website, the company responded to the class action lawsuit against Purina. The company announced that they stand by their product, and said of the potential litigation:

“Unfortunately, class action suits are common these days. They are not indicative of a product issue. In fact, we've faced two such suits in the past with similar allegations. Both were found to be baseless and were subsequently dismissed by the courts.

“Adding to the confusion, social media outlets can be a source of false or incomplete information, as many other pet food brands have experienced themselves.”

Revamped Beneful recipe
In August 2016, Purina released a revamped recipe for their Beneful dry food. Meat now is the first ingredient in chicken and beef varieties. Added sugar has been removed from all recipes.

According to the company, the Beneful’s recipes now include 22 grams or more of protein per cup. The dog food also includes vegetables and fruits, like spinach, peas, carrots and apples.

***************************
I looked up their info and thought you would find this informative. I guess that is why they say GOOD ingredients because they certainly can't say EXCELLENT. What they really should be saying is POOR. It just makes me cringe and then to make sure you add all those nasty colors to top it off -

Good ingredients is what you'll find at the heart of our Originals With Real Chicken recipe. We take our #1 ingredient, real farm-raised chicken, and blend it to perfection with whole grains and accents of vegetables. It’s 100% nutrition with a taste your adult dog will love.

Chicken, whole grain corn, barley, rice, chicken by-product meal, whole grain wheat, corn gluten meal, beef tallow preserved with mixed-tocopherols, soybean meal, oat meal, poultry by-product meal, glycerin, egg and chicken flavor, mono and dicalcium phosphate, calcium carbonate, salt, potassium chloride, poultry and pork digest, avocado, dried carrots, dried tomatoes, MINERALS [zinc sulfate, ferrous sulfate, manganese sulfate, copper sulfate, calcium iodate, sodium selenite], VITAMINS [Vitamin E supplement, niacin, Vitamin A supplement, calcium pantothenate, pyridoxine hydrochloride (Vitamin B-6), Vitamin B-12 supplement, thiamine mononitrate (Vitamin B-1), Vitamin D-3 supplement, riboflavin supplement (Vitamin B-2), menadione sodium bisulfite (Vitamin K), folic acid, biotin], choline chloride, L-Lysine monohydrochloride, Red 40, Yellow 5, Blue 2, garlic oil, Yellow 6.

Purina And Blue Buffalo Settle Lawsuits Two Years Later

On November 3, Nestlé Purina PetCare Company and Blue Buffalo Company, Ltd. announced that they have reached a mutually agreeable settlement of the lawsuits pending between them, related to 2014 false advertising of pet food claims. The terms of the settlement are confidential.

As a result of the settlement agreement, Blue Buffalo and Nestlé Purina have asked the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Missouri to dismiss the claims between the two parties and Purina's agencies with prejudice. Blue Buffalo will continue to prosecute its legal claims against the remaining parties.

History of Purina and Blue Buffalo legal battles

On May 6, 2014, Purina filed a lawsuit against Blue Buffalo for false advertising of pet food after testing revealed the presence of poultry by-product meal in some of Blue Buffalo’s top-selling pet foods. The false advertising of pet food lawsuits claimed that some Blue Buffalo products were not consistent with the company’s “True Blue Promise,” which stated that the products are “formulated with the finest natural ingredients” and made with “no chicken/poultry by-products meals; no corn, wheat or soy; and no artificial preservatives, colors or flavors.”

Subsequently, Blue Buffalo officially filed a lawsuit against Purina on May 14, 2014. The lawsuit, in response to a lawsuit filed by Purina against Blue Buffalo, claims defamation, unfair competition, false advertising and violations of trade practice statutes.

On May 6, 2015, Blue Buffalo acknowledged in court that a “substantial” and “material” portion of Blue Buffalo pet food sold to consumers contained poultry by-product meal, despite advertising claims to the contrary. Under the terms of the agreement, Blue Buffalo had to pay US$32 million into a settlement fund to settle the claims of the plaintiff class.

Further legal effects of Blue Buffalo and Purina’s lawsuits

To recoup some of the settlement funds, Blue Buffalo then filed lawsuits against the pet food ingredient broker and supplier involved in the false advertising of pet food case.

On September 27, US District Judge Rodney W. Sippel upheld claims against Diversified Ingredients Inc., the broker that allegedly sold ingredients adulterated with poultry by-product meal to Blue Buffalo, reported Law 360. However, the judge reduced some of the claims to compensation made against the broker by Wilber-Ellis Co., the ingredient supplier involved in a false advertising lawsuit against Blue Buffalo.

How Dogs And People Evolved Together

People live with and love many kinds of animals, but there’s just something special about our relationship with our dogs. We all get the sense that they need us the same way that we need them. Humans and canines, bonded together by some strange and immutable force. It’s almost as if we evolved for each other!

And there’s evidence to support that actually, we did. Here are some fascinating facts that scientists have discovered about the ancient, intertwined bond between humankind and canines…

1. Dogs first split off the wolf genome about 32,000 years ago.
Recently, scientists collected DNA from gray wolves as well as various dog breeds from across the globe. By comparing these samples against the DNA taken from an ancient dog skull uncovered in a Siberian mountain range, Chinese researchers determined that modern dogs split off from the wolf genome approximately 32,000 years ago … the earliest evidence ever discovered!

2. Dogs may have helped us beat Neanderthals in the evolution game.
While Neanderthals existed nearly 250,000 years ago, we Homo sapiens are a little newer on the scene: about 40,000 years ago or so. While no one is entirely sure why they became extinct whereas we flourished, some anthropologists surmise that domesticating dogs played a key role in allowing us to hunt more efficiently and therefore survive.

3. Their affable personality ensured their survival.
While wolves are naturally reserved and skittish around humans, dogs easily accept people as fellow pack members. From an evolutionary standpoint, the wolves who were comfortable enough approaching humans to beg off scraps possibly marked the first step in the domestication process. Which just goes to prove that dogs can’t help their genial nature!

4. Their body chemistry adapted closer to what we eat.
Right around the same time that human society moved from a hunting-based to a farming-based lifestyle, we started to further develop our aptitude for digesting starches. So did dogs. A 2013 study from the journal Nature found ten genes responsible for starch digestion that are not present in the carnivorous wolf species. Like us, dogs are true omnivores.

5. Modern dogs are more alike than they are different.
It’s hard to believe that hulking Great Danes and dainty teacup poodles are representatives of the same species, but they are! Their extensive physical variations are the result of selective breeding programs, which have only really been in vogue for less than 200 years. Without humans manipulating the breeding process, the huge disparities we know today would not exist.

5 Foods For Glowing Skin

Promises of age defying, wrinkle releasing and instant face lifts in a bottle keep beauty products flying off the shelves everywhere from the grocery store to the most posh department store. I’m not saying a few fancy (or not so fancy) products don’t have their role in your skin's health and glow but your best bet at beautiful skin? Is building it from the inside out.

These five foods will offer you loads of nutrients to help clear your complexion, prevent wrinkles and make your skin glow.

Strawberries: This sweet fruit is full of antioxidants (including vitamin C and manganese) that help to prevent damage to the skin by free radicals. Not only that, but it also packs a punch in the B vitamin department, which plays a role in increasing circulation to the skin. Better circulation equals better cell turnover and a healthy flush. Here’s a bonus to these little fruits - researchers have shown that B vitamins play a role in a reduction in hair loss and contribute to shinier hair. Top a slice of Ezekial toast with a tablespoon of ricotta cheese and sliced strawberries as your new go-to breakfast.

Spinach: This leafy green contains zinc, important in controlling the oil content of the skin, which helps minimize breakouts. It’s also an essential component in the formation of collagen, which gives your skin cells their strength and keeps their structure. A boost of zinc will prevent skin from sagging and premature wrinkles from forming. Toss a cup of fresh spinach (frozen works too!) into your fruit smoothie for some serious skin boosting benefits.

Salmon: This fish is a well known option for those pining after glowing skin. And for good reason. Its high amount of omega 3s (DHA and EPA) are essential fatty acids necessary for good health, including skin. We can’t make them in our body so we must get them from food or supplements. DHA and EPA help maintain the structural and functional integrity of cell membranes and assist in warding off wrinkles. Their anti-inflammatory effect helps prevent collagen breakdown. Grill a salmon filet with rosemary and lemon for the simplest way to wow your dinner guests. Seafood not your thing? An Omega 3 supplement might be the next best option to ensure you’re getting a healthy dose of those necessary fats.

Almonds: Many know about biotin as being the answer for good hair and nails. But did you know that this vitamin does a whole lot of good for your skin, too? Almonds provide you with this particular B vitamin that gets the limelight for its role in stimulating faster cell turnover for a glowing complexion. Get your healthy dose of biotin by topping a salad with sliced almonds or by grabbing a handful of raw almonds as a quick snack.

Kidney beans: You may have heard of beans referred to as the ‘magical fruit,’ but this is true for more reasons than this tune’s amusing lyrics. Their high amounts of iron increase oxygen transportation throughout the body. This means better circulation, which means serious benefits for a healthy glow. Pairing them with a food high in vitamin C will ensure all of the iron gets put to work towards your best looking skin. Make a hearty veggie chili full of bell peppers, tomatoes and kidney beans for a nutrient match made in heaven.

The Many Health Benefits Of Living With Dogs

While all dog lovers intuitively know we are happier and healthier with a dog or two (or three) in our lives, scientists around the world have been working to prove that this isn’t just a feeling but a fact. Dogs really do make us healthier!

  1. Fewer allergies
That old wives tale that being around animals is more likely to make you sick is just that … a misconception. In fact, children raised around animals are 33% less likely to have allergies to those animals than those who are raised in a more sterile environment. Just like the “hygiene hypothesis” surmising that early exposure to germs makes us better at fighting them, being around allergens while our bodies are still growing helps the body recognize these particles as being A-OK.
  2. Trimmer waist
Pet parents are less likely to suffer from obesity compared to the general population, particularly if you are the person in the household responsible for walking the dog. It makes sense: maybe you can talk yourself out of an early a.m. stroll, but it’s harder to justify skipping the walk when your dog is giving you those big, excited eyes!

  3. Lower rates of eczema
Eczema, a painful and itchy skin condition, is a common plague in children and thought to have an allergic component. Children raised with dogs have demonstrably lower levels of eczema compared to the pet-less, which is great news for those of us who love dogs AND kids, and couldn’t imagine going without either!
  4. Cancer detection
A dog’s sense of smell is somewhere between 10,000 and 100,000 times more sensitive than our own. Think about that the next time your spray perfume in their presence! One of the unintended benefits of this is that many dogs seem to pick up on very subtle olfactory indicators of disease. Dogs have shown repeatable, reliable skill in finding lung, bladder, breast, colon, and ovarian cancers in people … some of whom passed more commonly accepted screening tests! If your dog shows a sudden and insatiable interest in a certain body part, don’t ignore it … your pup may be trying to save your life!
  5. Noticing low blood sugar
More than one out of every three dogs living with diabetics can detect low blood sugar, according to researchers. With no prior training, some of these dogs have on their own alerted their owners to something being off, providing people a critical lead time in intervening before their blood sugar levels lead to serious symptoms.

Customer Notification Addiction Foods Voluntarily Recalls Limited Lots of New Zealand Brushtail & Vegetable and New Zealand Venison & Apple Canned Dog Food

Release Date: Wednesday, August 31, 2016

Addiction Foods LLC of Seattle, WA is voluntarily recalling very limited quantities of our New Zealand Brushtail & Vegetable and New Zealand Venison & Apple Canned Dog Food.

Our testing has identified elevated levels of Vitamin A and slight variance in calcium/ phosphorous ratios. There have been no reports of animal health concerns, but these particular lots do not meet our quality standards. If dogs were fed exclusively these products for 60 days, the expected effect would be a reduction in appetite. Therefore, out of an abundance of caution, we are voluntarily recalling these products.

Addiction Food’s top priority is the safety and quality of our products. We are taking immediate action and implementing additional operating procedures to prevent an issue like this from occurring in the future.

No other Addiction Pet Food products are affected by this recall.

Multivitamins… Are They A Good Or Bad Idea

LifesAbundanceMultiVitamins

In an ideal world, we would eat the perfect amounts and proportions of just the right foods from pristine, organically grown farms so we could obtain optimal nutrition from each and every bite. Sounds good, right?

It’s important to understand that foods are complicated – in a good way. All foods contain a host of complex micronutrients that work together in perfect harmony. This is why I believe that you can’t pop a pill and expect it to replace all of the nutrition foods deliver in your diet. There’s no singular pill, powder or solution that can compare with the comprehensive nutrition that fruits, veggies, nuts, seeds and other foods supply to the diet.

The problem is that this is the real world, not an ideal world and our food supply, lifestyles and unique nutritional needs make it difficult for us to get the all nutrients we need from food alone. Fruits and vegetables don’t contain the vitamins and minerals they used to years ago due to the depletion of these nutrients in the soil. They also lose nutritional potency in transit from the farm to your table, not to mention the nutrients lost when cooking them. And finally, our hectic schedules often get in the way of making the right dietary choices. For example, instead of a grilled chicken breast with a sweet potato and green beans for dinner, you worked late and picked up a bucket of fried chicken with mashed potatoes and an apple cobbler dessert. This is why only one out of five people get adequate vitamins and minerals from their food.

Here’s where I believe a daily supplements can be very helpful. Although they cannot replace all of the nutrition food delivers, when your body needs a little extra help, they will have your back and can go a long way to help nutritionally compensate those of us who live in the real world.

So now you may be wondering, “what should I be taking?” There’s so many options to choose from that it can get kind of overwhelming. Is a gender-specific formula the way to go, should I try compressed pills, capsules or a gummies, perhaps a mega-dose formula is right for me or should opt for a special supplement formulated for hair and nails, energy or my age? I believe a multivitamin that provides you with the essential nutrients for optimal health and no more makes the most sense. Because too much of “good thing” can have unwanted consequences.

I recommend Life’s Abundance Multivitamin because it provides a balanced approach to a daily supplement, providing all of the essential nutrients and none of the extras. Plus, we’ve added a unique spice blend of black pepper extract, rosemary, turmeric, oregano, cayenne, cinnamon, holy basil and cloves. These spices offer a wealth of plant-based phytonutrients and antioxidants so important for optimal health. And since I believe it’s important to reduce additives from the diet, it is free from magnesium stearate. Life’s Abundance Multivitamin veggie capsules are made from cellulose, which not only helps protect sensitive ingredients but also breaks down and delivers nutrients more easily than compressed tablets. And, last but not least, it is soy, grain and dairy free with no added sugar, artificial flavors, color or preservatives. So, do the best you can to eat as healthy as you can and if you need a little help, try Life’s Abundance Multivitamin.

Precious Extra Time With Sheldon After Canine Kidney Disease

Canine-kidney-disease

Loving parents of a beloved dog, wheaten terrier, share the following touching story of Sheldon overcoming canine kidney disease and spending two more quality years together; incase you need some encouragement when the Vet only gives your four-legged friends only a few weeks to live…

“Sheldon came into our lives on August 17, 2003. Everyone knew Sheldon. He was such a loving little boy and was just happy to be loved by our whole family. Sheldon always had a sensitive stomach and was on a strict diet of prescription dog food and dog treats.

Sheldon became very sick in July 2013 and was diagnosed with stage 3 kidney disease. Even with all the new medications that were prescribed and the fluids he was receiving every single day, the doctors only gave him two weeks to live. Our family was beyond devastation…

My husband searched the internet and found Pet Wellbeing and the Kidney Support Gold Medicine. We had nothing to lose and would try anything at this point to help our Sheldon.

We started giving Sheldon Kidney Support Gold twice a day as instructed and started to see improvement almost immediately.

Of course we continued with the daily injection of fluids at the vet, and our baby boy never even cried. He was just always so happy to see the staff and he made their day too. I wrote a couple of reviews during this period so other pet parents would learn of this miracle drug. Our baby boy lost his battle on February 7, 2016, two weeks short of his 12 1/2 birthday.

We got an extra 2 1/2 years more than expected, but this was not nearly enough. We miss him so much and everything reminds us of him. Our Sheldon was one in a million.  Thank you for everything.”

Exercise With Your Dogs For Disease Prevention

Exercise-for-pets

Summer makes us think about getting outdoors with our pets and this is a good thing for both human and animals. For most of us our pets live indoors. Many are cooped up inside with bathroom privileges only for most of the day. For many active dogs, this is the equivalent to prison.

It is no wonder we have so many dogs with anxiety and boredom problems like destructive chewing and constant barking. Most of these problems could be solved simply by increasing exercise!

Exercise is a mental stress reliever for dogs and a way that they find out about the world. As anyone who has ever walked a dog knows, the nose is constantly to the ground finding out who has been there and when.

The important thing to realize is that although most dogs can handle a 30 minute walk, you need to first determine your dog’s fitness level and how much exercise your dog can handle. (read below to learn more)

There are a number of goods reasons to exercise with your dog. Here are a few:

1. Exercise promotes weight control and digestive health. Although weight loss is only 20 %

exercise and 80 % nutrition, that 20 % is important to keep your dog fit and trim.

2. Exercise works to prevent destructive behavior and hyperactivity. Pups that have jobs or

are active are far less bored than the wall flowers that sit at home chewing on your couch.

3. Exercise prevents or delays the onset of arthritis and helps prevent cognitive dysfunction.

4. Exercise encourages socialization with other dogs and people and improve your bond with

your pet.

5. Exercise is good for owner health as well. Dogs can be great training partners. Walking the dog is the most basic form of exercise—which is physical and mental work for the dog.

The important thing to realize is that although most dogs can handle a 30 minute walk, you need to first determine your dog’s fitness level and how much exercise your dog can handle:

Toy dogs may only be able to handle 5 to 10 minutes of exercise at a time. Dogs with pushed in faces like Pugs can not handle a lot of exercise in the heat. Long haired dogs and Arctic breeds may also have problems in the heat and may either need to be clipped or only exercised when it is cooler. For some dogs, swimming may need to replace walking in warm weather. Check with your veterinarian before you start any major exercise program with your dog.

  • Safety issues with walking need to be taken into consideration. Depending on the terrain where you walk, your dog may need booties. Inspect your dog’s pads for injuries after walking. In hot weather, avoid asphalt as it will cause blistering of the foot pads. Leash your dog—if you are running use a leash that attaches to your body. Retractable leashes may seem convenient but can injury you or your dog so do not use those!
  • Take plenty of water for you and your pet. If you are going to be exercising strenuously for 30 minutes or more your dog will need a snack, so take that along as well. Use some form of flea/tick and heartworm preventive, mosquito repellent and sunscreen and don’t forget to pick up after your dog.
  • If you’re not a runner and your dog needs to run, consider a treadmill. Your hound can increase her muscle definition, tone up and increase her life span by making a regular date with her own treadmill. There are several types available for different sizes of dogs. Other alternatives are dog sports—try agility, skijoring, swimming, dock diving, biking , hiking and doga (doggie yoga).Don’t let the fun of exercising with your pet pass you by this summer, and remember inviting your four-legged friend into your own wellness routine can be a vital step towards a common pet ailment prevention!
  • Challenge your entire family to involve your pets into fun activities, here’s an idea – this girl is training golden labrador retriever puppy in the swimming pool – jump and dive underwater to retrieve shell. Active games with family pets and popular dog breeds like companion.
