Even dogs without liver disease may need support to detox prescription medications, which are often damaging to the liver. Milk Thistle is an excellent way for the liver to deal with this toxic load of medications., It is not contraindicated to any conventional medication and it is gentle enough for long-term use.
While the Milk Thistle sold in health stores is usually alcohol based and should not be given to dogs. PetWellbeing's Canine Milk Thistle is glycerine-based and safe for dogs.
Milk Thistle should be administered to every dog taking liver taxing medications and especially if the liver is damaged or diseased.
The active ingredients in Canine Milk Thistle are known collectively as silymarin.
- Help maintain the health of your dog’s liver.
- Scavenge for harmful free radicals.
- Help guard against toxins trying to bind to the dog’s liver.
- Support the stability of liver membranes
Milk Thistle provides excellent health support when your dog isn't feeling well, to support his liver and help his recovery. As an anti-oxidant, silymarin is even more effective than vitamin E. It also helps support the production of new liver cells in dogs.
Milk Thistle is a especially useful health support when your dog is being treated with things like:
- anti-inflammatories (NSAIDS) and corticosteroids (Prednisone)
- chemotherapy drugs
- Cyclosporine (Atopica)
- Imuran (Anathioprine)
- Phenobarbital for seizures
- trimethoprim/sulfa antibiotics
- daily heartworm medications
An all natural herbal product, milk thistle is gentle enough for long-term use.
Healthy Tip from Dr. Jordan
Processed foods stress your dog’s liver as it attempts to detoxify the preservatives and other chemicals. Go organic! Avoid grains and focus on healthy proteins from free-range grass-fed animals. Green foods will help detoxify your dog’s liver. Expect your dog’s moods to be lifted as well!

My wonderful Aussie, Kira, started to not eat. It was a battle to get her to eat anything. And she started losing weight... She just kept getting worse and then one night we came across your web site that spoke about liquid milk thistle. So we started using it and slowly but surely she has gotten so healthy that you would not even know she is the same dog.
I have been using this product for more than 5 years now, even before my Vet recommended this product to me. My Angel (beagle) was diagnosed with epileptic seizure disorder since she was barely two years old. To prevent the seizures, she was prescribed phenobarbital. After years of taking this medication, I was concerned on the effects of the medication on her liver. After thorough research, I stumbled on this product. When I went to see the Vet again, I mentioned to her my concern (liver toxicity due to medication) but did not tell her I was already using Milk Thistle. Lo and behold, she recommended the same product. My Angel is now 12 yrs old and aging gracefully and still mischievous
Ordered this product after doing some internet research on dogs with liver disease. Our 13 year old Scottie has been diagnosed with liver disease but we do not want to put him through a liver biopsy so was looking for a supplement that might help him. We have gone through our first bottle and have just received our second shipment and are so pleased with the results. Before we started him on the Milk Thistle, he was just sleeping most of the day....now he is so much more alert and even bounces around and plays like he did years ago!! Thanks for offering a great product!!
This product works EXCELLENT!!! My 10 year old Jack Russell was sooo close to dying:he wouldn't eat, drink or go to the bathroom and he was sooo sick!!! This went on for a little while we had taken him into the vet, he had to have some of his teeth pulled due to bacteria from his teeth and the vet also did a biopsy on his liver, which we found out is compromised and we thought we were going to have to put him down. The vet prescribed liver pills, but the side effects for this medication would be hard on his liver!! What good would this do, his liver is already in rough shape!! So that night I went online and found out about milk thistle. I went to the health stores because you can get it for humans and canines, but they only had milk thistle for humans. I was desperate, my dog was dying, I went to another vet that offered holistic healing, but they did not have any milk thistle for canine's. I went back onto the internet and google milk thistle for canine's and this is when I found this AWESOME product!!! I ordered it, I received the product in 2 days, started feeding my Jack this and he is with us today back to his hyper, hungry self!!! Thank you Pet Wellbeing, my Jack would not be here today if I did not get this product!!
Before using Milk Thistle, Our 14 year old Apsa mix was on her way to death. She was having seizures and was like a rag doll, I had to carry her to potty and we just did not know what to do for her, the Vet told us it was the end of her life and that we should bring her in so they could help her die in comfort. She was taking 5 Meds at the time and quit eating, lost weight to the point that she was skin and bones. At last resort, we discontinued all Meds and went on Milk Thistle twice per day. It has been about three weeks now, and she has gotten her appetite back like normal, she is walking on her own, no seizures, and almost back to complete normal. I would recommend this product any time. We are very thankful that we discovered this product. It saved our dogs life.
Jäger, my 5.5 yr. old Rottweiler, occasionally suffered bouts of stiffness so he was on Rimadyl & Tramadol as needed. Having owned dogs my whole life, I'm aware of the detrimental side effects associated with long-term use. As my husband says, "You're in love with your dog," which translates that I care deeply & will do everything in my power to keep him comfortable, healthy & happy. I purchased milk thistle as a pro-active treatment. Given his size / weight, we go thru the bottle relatively quickly. However, it is easily mixed into his food, J has never rejected it, nor has he experienced any side effects.
Since the 1st milk thistle purchase, J experienced an "improper landing" while exiting my car; this resulted in an extruded disc between C6 & C7. I did consult my vet, of course, & we did full body X-rays while he was under anesthesia for a dental. This confirmed our suspicions of a neck injury & provided images of his hip dysplasia. Instead of neck surgery, I opted for acupuncture. Since then, J enjoys a more holistic diet to include different proteins, pumpkin, sardines in water, local honey, hard-boiled egg, turmeric, no grains, etc.
He will require Rimadyl (or other effective anti-inflammatory) so the milk thistle will always be a component in his 2 daily meals. Using milk thistle is in tandem with with the Traditional Chinese Veterinary Medicine approach (new diet) and, I must say, I have never seen an animal recover from an injury so quickly. I'm pleased to note that my Traditional Western Vet & new TCM Vet agree that J is benefiting from both approaches to pet care.
I'll continue to use Pet Wellbeing as a valued resource, & look forward to finding products that will enhance my beloved dog Jäger's quality of life.
